English Education in Siyi Qiaoxiang of Guangdong in Modern China
(by RAN Yan-jie,Huang Hai-juan)
Abstract: Since the late Qing Dynasty, most young men in Siyi (four counties) of Guangdong ventured to North America and Australia to make a living. If they wanted to integrate themselves into the host societies, they had to learn a new language such as English. Kuang Qizhao and Wu Guangjian were pioneers of English education and English-Chinese translation. Families in Siyi then attached great importance to their children’s education, and some wealthy families would send their boys to Hong Kong to study English to prepare for going abroad. During the Republic of China period, taking into account the actual situation of the native sons going abroad, local elites advocated that local schools should put a high value on English courses. With the increasing frequency of culture exchange between Siyi and overseas, English played an important role in communication. Interestingly, the Siyi dialect had absorbed English pronunciation in the expressions of some foreign products and new things, forming a dintinctive "feature" of the Qiaoxiang dialect.

OnLiangQichao’sViewof“Soul”
(by ZHANG Kai-zuo)
Abstract: Liang Qichao’s concern over “soul” came from his attention to religion. He believed that religion and philosophy differs in that religion focuses on “soul” and identified with the theory of “soul” of Buddhism. According to Buddhism, one’s behavior entails consequences, the “unit” and “total”. The “unit” is called “soul”, and the “total” is called “karma”, which is also called “spirit”. He put more emphasis on “karma”, and argued that “karma” is the real “self” while flesh is just the “other” and not “self”. Therefore, he proposed that one should try hard to create good karma for the benefit of the total. This shows that his focus was still the nation and society and not the reincarnation or the last judgment of the individual soul and he had inherited the Confucian’s spirit of participation in society and patriotism.

OntheDifferencesbetweenPlotsInvolvingEthinicMinoritiesinTheJudgeDeeMysteriesandTheScholars
(by WANG Fan)
Abstract:RobertVanGulik’sTheJudgeDeeMysteriesand Wu Jingzi's The Scholars both have plots involving ethnic minorities, but there are many differences between them. The plots of suppressing the revolts of the Miao tribes inTheScholarsare based on historical events while the plots inTheJudgeDeeMysteriesare largely fiction. Wu basically did not characterize figures of minority tribes while Gulik depicted such artistic images in depth. In The Scholars the plots about squelching the Miao revolts by General Tang also reveal the real living conditions of the Miao people. In narrating the war between the Han people and ethnic minorities Gulik minutely described life in brothels and ethnic minorities’ life and culture. Such differences are closely related not only to Gulik’s positive presentation and dialectical acceptance of Chinese culture, but also to Wu’s historical consciousness and the influence of the ancient concept of "distinguishing between Chinese and barbaric ethnic minorities” on ancient Chinese scholars.

Similar ethical situations are also echoed by the female images in contemporary works. (by WANG Jin-yi, ZENG Xue-qi, ZHENG Xuan)
Abstract: As a type of new institutional supply, the introduction of the SSE STAR Market is of great strategic significance to China's capital market. The STAR Market serves China’s strategic emerging high-tech industries; it has adopted the registration system for the first time in China, and no longer has the profit requirement for companies that have reached a certain market scale, which is conducive to the financing of high-tech companies in the growth period. In addition to the registration system, the STAR Market has made a number of breakthroughs, including a series of system features such as strengthening information disclosure responsibility, adopting the market-oriented inquiry in regard to IPO pricing, brand-new trading rules, allowing the establishment of special shareholding structure and implementing a strict delisting system. These measures are favorable to the long-term stable development of China's securities market.

(by GAO Zhuo)
Abstract: ccording to the Baisha School, xin, known as people’s mind, canaccommodate and enable li,known as rationality,to function and become the origin of ethics. Additionally, through the connection between humans and nature, xin can eliminate the division between heart and mind and emphasize the function of people’s mind, which in turn consolidates the philosophica status of xin.The promotion of xin has led to the revision of Cheng and Zhu’s Neo Confucianism, and a suspicious attitude and tendency to underestimate the influence of books occurred. The combination of xin and nature makes it turn from predestined external morality to innate internal morality, and also from Taoism to Confucianism.

TheGovernanceofAlgorithmicDiscriminationfromthePerspectiveofData
(by YAN Wen-guang)
Abstract: With the rise of the power of algorithms in the era of artificial intelligence, algorithmic discrimination is emerging. The essence of algorithmic discrimination is that the mapping effect of big data amplifies and strengthens the inherent prejudices of the human society, which causes great harm to the basic rights of the public, the competitive interests of enterprises and the civil rights of individuals. The discriminatory data used in compilation, training, iteration and interaction of algorithms and the undesensitized information in the application process are important factors for the formation of algorithmic discrimination. Therefore, in terms of governance, we should return to the perspective of big data, establish a unified data regulatory agency, improve the legal system for personal information protection, set up a data review and accountability mechanism, and form a pluralistic co-governance pattern that integrates government regulation, industry self-discipline and public participation.

TheFormationandDevelopmentoftheTimeNoun“gangcai”
(by ZHOU Hong-yan)
Abstract: Because of bisyllablization, the synonymous Chinese adverbs “gang”and “cai” were combined as disyllable adverbs, and then were lexicalized into a time noun, which is syntactically reflected by the fact they can serve as the subject or topic of a sentence, attributive or prepositional object. Semantically, “gangcai” initially denoted “not long ago” as a relative relation of time, then gradually changed to “not long before the time of speaking” with a fixed reference point, and further developed to “not long ago in the past”, which became an absolute concept of time. At the same time, “gangcai” gradually acquired the semantic feature indicating that the previous action or state is different from the present. In the modern times, “gangcai” was basically solidified into a two-syllable word, and the disappearance of “caigang” also proves the lexicalization of “gangcai”.

AnAnalysisofTCSLTeachers’MultimodalDiscourseinClassroom
(by JIANG Yan-yan,Liu Bin)
Abstract:Based on the theory of multimodal discourse analysis, this paper analyses the multimodal discourse of four TCSL teachers. It is found that TCSL teachers can integrate and coordinate the oral mode, PPT combination mode, body gesture mode, and environment mode. However, compared with experienced teachers, novice teachers still display differences in the effectiveness, coordination and discourse quantity in the multi-mode discourse. In the era of "Internet + education", the multi-modal discourse analysis theory should be used creatively in the practice of international Chinese teaching and multi-modal Chinese teaching should be designed rationally.
