It was already late when we set out for the next town, which according to the map was about fifteen miles away on the other side of the hill. There we felt sure that we would find a bed for the night. Darkness fell soon after we left the village, but luckily we met no one as we drove fast along the narrow winding road that led to the hills. As we climbed higher, it became colder and rain began to fall, making it difficult at times to see the road. I asked John, my companion, to drive more slowly.

After we had traveled for about twenty miles, there was still no sign of the town which was marked on the map. We were beginning to get worried. Then without warning the car stopped. A quick examination showed that we had run out of petrol. Although we had little food with us, we decided to spend the night in the car.

Our meal was soon over. I tried to go to sleep at once, but John, who was a poor sleeper, got out of the car after a few minutes and went for a walk up the hills. Soon he came back. From the top of the hill he had seen, in the valley below, the lights of the town we were looking for. We at once push the car to the top of the hill and set off down the hill. Bogota is the capital city of the Republic of Colombia in South America. The city is built on a plateau (高原) which is about 8,000 feet above sea level. The eastern Andes Mountains surround the city and protect it from the cold winds. This makes the weather nice, like May weather in most of the United States. In spring and autumn there are heavy rains that last about two months. The city is a very interesting shape to see. The San Francisco and San Augustin River divided the city into four parts, like a cake.

Bogota is a large and busy city. More than 3,982941 people live there. The land of the plateau is very rich. There are too many farms on which wheat, potatoes, and coffee are raised. Many people work in factories in the city, making such things as cloth, matches, and rope. There are museums, colleges and universities. The most important is the University of Bogota.

The city was founded more than four hundred years ago by people from Europe. For a long time, Bogota was one of the most difficult capital cities to get to because one had to sail up the Magdalena River and then climb high mountains before winter came. Now, it has modern roads and railways.

The world itself is becoming much smaller by using modern traffic and modern communication means. Life today is much easier than it was hundreds of years ago, but it has brought new problems. One of the biggest problems is pollution. To pollute means to make things dirty. Pollution comes in many ways. We see it, smell it, drink it and even hear it.

Man has been polluting the earth. The more people, the more pollution. Many years ago, the problem was not so serious because there were not so many people. When the land was used up or the river was dirty in one place, man moved to another place. But this is no longer true.

Man is now slowly polluting the whole world.

Air pollution is still the most serious. Its bad for all living things in the world, but it is not the only one kind of pollution. Water pollution kills our fish and pollutes our drinking water. Noise pollution makes us angry more easily.

Many countries are making rules to fight pollution. They stop people from burning coal in houses and factories in the city, and from putting dirty smoke into the air. Pollution by SO2 is now the most dangerous kind of air pollution. It is caused by heavy traffic. We are sure that if there are fewer people driving, there will be less air pollution.

The earth is our home. We must take care of it. That means keeping the land, water and air clean. And we must take care of the rise in pollution at the same time.

72. Our world is becoming much smaller because ______.

A. the earth is being polluted day and night

B. there are so many people living on the earth

C. science has been developing

D. pollution has been rising

73. Pollution comes in many ways. We can even hear it. Here “it” means ______.

A. rubbish(垃圾)

B. noise pollution

C. air pollution

D. water pollution

74. Which of the following is NOT true?

A. Air pollution is bad for all living things in the world.

B. Luckily, people have come to know the danger of pollution.

C. The more people there are in one place, the worse environment they maybe have.

D. Hundreds of years ago, life was much easier than it is today.

75. What would be the best title for the passage?

A. Modern Traffic.

B. Protecting Lands.

C. Air Pollution.

D. Saving the earth.

B) 请先阅读下面短文,掌握其大意,然后根据短文内容从下面方框内的七个选项中,选择五个还原到文中,使短文意思通顺、结构完整。(每小题2分,共10分。)

Clothes are important and necessary to us, but do you know how to choose suitable clothes in a correct way? 76

When you go shopping and want to buy some clothes, you should think about which kind of clothes you really need and decide how much money you can spend on them. Then look at the labels (标签) that are inside the new clothes. They tell you how to take care of the clothes.

77 A sweater label may tell you to wash it in cold water. The label on a coat may say “dry clean only” and cleaning in water may ruin (损坏) this coat. 78

Many clothes today must be dry-cleaned. Dry cleaning is expensive. 79 You can save money if you buy clothes that can be washed or that are well made. Well-made clothes last longer. They look good even after they have been washed many times.

Clothes that cost more money dont always mean they are better made. 80 On the other hand, less expensive clothes may sometimes look better and fit you well.

A. How do we teenagers choose fashionable clothes for ourselves?

B. When buying new clothes, you had better check if they need to be dry-cleaned.

C. We need to know how to look after the new clothes.

D. Here are some ideas for you.

E. They may not fit you, either.

F. If you do as the directions say on the label, you can keep your clothes looking their best.

G. The label for a shirt may tell you to wash it in warm water.
