浅谈There Be结构的翻译技巧

摘    要： 在英语学习中经常见到There be结构，但是学生在学习中始终无法准确地翻译该结构。本文试对There be结构的一些用法进行讲解，以求达到顺利解决该结构翻译问题的目的。

There be 结构在英语中的运用比较广泛，但是学生在学习中始终无法准确地翻译该结构。在英语中，There be 结构表示某地存在某物或某人，结构为“there+be+名词+地点（时间）状语”。这种结构中的引导词“there”本身没有意义，常弱读，there与be结合，意义相当于汉语中的”有“。此结构中有时不用动词be，而用 seem to be，happen to be，be likely to be，be bould to be等词组，或用live， come，enter，run，stand，occure，lie等。There be 后面的名词是句子的主语，属倒装结构。其疑问句形式是将be或will/have/can/must等助动词、情态动词提至there之前，否定形式则直接在be或助动词、情态动词后加not。例如：There was an English party in the hall last night.昨晚大厅里举行了英语聚会。

There runs a river at a distance.在远处有一条河流过。

Once there lived an old fisherman in a village.从前村子里住着一个老渔民。

此外，在科技英语中，这种结构往往不带状语，而是带有各种不同结构的定语，翻译时要根据上下文灵活选择。

1.译成有主语的“有”。

A.在There be 结构中通常可把句中的地点状语译成汉语的主语（省去介词）。

There is a picture on the wall.墙上有一幅画。

There stands a typewriter on the desk.桌子上放着一台打印机。

B.不带状语的“There be”结构，有时可以把原文主语部分拆开来翻译，部分译成汉语的主语，另一部分译成谓语“有”的宾语。

There are three main laws of mechanics，or three laws of Newton.力学有三大定律，即牛顿三大定律。

There are about seventy metallic elements.金属元素有大约七十种左右。

2.译成无主语的“有”。

On one wall there is a big red flag.一面墙上有一面红旗。

3.不带状语的There be结构，有时可以直接译成汉语的无主语“有”或其他动词。

Where there is a will，there is a way.有志者事竟成。

There may have been an accident.可能发生了事故。

There is going to be a storm.要刮大风了。

4.译成汉语无主语“有”的英语句子，其主语之后，有时带有解释部分。

There are two kinds of charge-positive and negative.有两种电荷：正电荷和负电荷。

5.其他译法。

There are friends and friends.朋友有好的，也有坏的。（译为并列句）

There is no come and go with him.他很固执，毫不变通。（译成谓语）

There is no down.平安无事。（译成四字句）

There is not a moment to be lost.分秒必争。

There more danger from a pretended friend than an open enemy.伪装的朋友比公开的敌人更危险/披着羊皮的狼。（介词后名词译成主语，主语译成谓语）

There is no telling what will happen.未来的事无可奉告。（将telling的宾语译成主语，主语译成了谓语。）

6.There be结构作定语从句时，省略作从句主语的关系代词。

He has made a list of all the papers there are on this subject.（which定语从句省略了主语 which） 他将所有关于这个题目的论文列了个单子。

There is the fastest train（that） there is to Beijing.那儿现有去北京的特快列车。

There is something （that） keeps upsetting him.有些事使他心烦意乱。

There are all books （that）there are in the library.图书馆所有的书都在那里。

7.有几个并列成分作主语时，动词一般与最近的一个主语在人称和数方面保持一致。

There is a worker and some students at the party.在聚会上有一个工人和一些学生。

There are two pencils and a pen in the pencil box.铅笔盒中有两支铅笔，一支钢笔。

8.在There be结构中，一般说来，谓语动词“be”须与主语保持数的一致。但在口语中，Theres后面出现复数形式的主语也是常有的。如：

Theres worse things than that.还有比这更糟糕的事情。

Theres two patients in the waiting room.在候诊大厅有两位病人。

Theres lots of good fishes in the sea.大海中有许多好看的鱼。

9.There与be中间可插入一些表推测的情态动词、表时态的短语和动词短语 （和将来时be going to/ will，现在完成时 have/has + pp.，used to结构等连用，注意其构成形式，这一内容在我们日常练习中经常出现错误，是一难点，也是历年中考试题中的一个考点。）。例如：

There must be a pen in the box.盒子中一定有支钢笔。

There happened to be some money in my pocket.口袋里碰巧有些钱。

There is going to be a meeting tonight.明天将有一个会议。

There has been a big tree on the top of the hill.山顶有一棵大树。

There used to be a church across from the bank.银行对面曾经有一间教堂。

10.There be + 主语 + doing +介词短语。例如：

There is a truck collecting rubish outside.外面有辆卡车正在收集垃圾。

There is a wallet lying on the ground. 地上有一个钱包。

11.There is（was）+no +动词ing结构相当于It is（was） impossible to +动词原形。如：

There is no going home.=It is impossible to go home.

There is no living with him.=It is impossible to live with him.

There is no knowing what may happen.=It is impossible to know what may happen.

12.There be 句型的反义疑问句。

There is a cup on the table， isnt there？桌子上有只杯子，是吗？

There is some orange in the glass， isnt there？杯子里有橘汁，是吗？

There are a lot of letters in the mailbox， arent there？邮筒里有很多信件，是吗？

There will be a new hospital nearby， wont there？附近要建一家新医院，是吗？

13. There be结构和have的比较。

（1）区别点：there be 意为存在，强调某地有某物，不表示所属关系;have 表示所有关系， 强调某人或某地有某物，这是其基本用法。如：

There are some trees in front of the house.房前有些树。

Tom has many friends in China.汤姆在中国有许多朋友。

（2）相同点：在表示结构上的含有时，既可以用there be 句型，又可以用have（has）表示。如：

There are many long rivers in China./China has many long rivers.中国有许多长河。

How many days are there in March？/How many days has in March？三月份有多少天？
