The tradition of making a dayin honor of(向……表示敬意)friends began in the US in 1935.Since then,Friendship Dayhas bee celebrated（与时光对应）every year on the first Sunday in August.

This beautiful idea of celebrating Friendship Day was accepted by a large number of countries.Following the popularity and success of Friendship Day in US,several other countriesadopted(采用)the tradition.In 1997,the United Nations named Winnie the Pooh as the world’s Ambassador of Friendship.

On Friendship Day,people meet their friends and exchange cards and flowers to honor their friends.Many social and cultural organizations also celebrate Friendship Day by hosting programs and get-togethers.

People celebrate Friendship Day at different times of the year in different ways.For example,

National Friendship Day is on the first Sunday in August.

Women’s Friendship Day is on the third Sunday in August.

International Friendship Month is February.

Old Friends and New Friends Week is the third week of May.

However,the idea behind the celebration of the day is the same.Everywhere,people express their love for their friends andcherish(珍爱)their friendship in life.
