'All I Care about is the Tiniest and Most Solitary Star':
On Hong Yings Writing about Women at the Bottom
Ni Zihui
Abstract: The remark, 'All I Care about is the Tiniest and Most Solitary Star', can be viewed as an epitome of Hong Yings mission of writing about women at the bottom. Her childhood experience in the ghetto is the inspirational source for Hong Ying who, by way of literature, represents the real life of women at the bottom, reconstructing the history of a concealed female Other from the bottom point of view. In her early work, Hong Ying depicts the unspeakable darkness born by women at the bottom in the patriarchal marital relationship with the images of termagants and sluts, lifting the curtain on the concealed women living at the bottom of the Third World, in the revelation of a true self. In her mid-to-late writing about women at the bottom, Hong Ying has a new perspective on the world as she gradually moves to a new model of male and female cohabitation, away from the oppositional gender conflict. In her new work, Warriors in the Moonlight, Hong Ying expresses her expectation on the spiritual power of the women at the bottom by way of warriors in the moonlight, and the success or failure of this image as it appears helps it go back to the myth, dropping at the foot of oneself from the contradictory attempt to save others.
