Listening to Hansheng : Reading Huang Kongzhaos
Poems Published in the Chinese Times
Wu Hua and Xu Xueqing
Abstract: Ta hon kongbo or the Chinese Times, circulating between 1910 and 1992 in Vancouver, was the longest running Chinese language daily newspaper in Canada. During its existence of more than 80 years, it was the dominating voice of the Chinese community in Vancouver for many years. This article examines the writings in the Poetry column of the newspapers Literary Supplements section, named Hansheng or the Chinese Voice. It focuses on one contributor, Huang Kongzhao, and his poems about his lived experiences as a Chinese migrant in Canada. A recurring theme in Huangs poems is melancholy caused by involuntary separation from his home and homeland and his longing for them. Huang Kongzhao was a regular and representative contributor to the Chinese Times and his poems become part of the collective voice of the Chinese in Canada, voicing the shared concerns and demands while reflecting self-positioning in constructing a diasporic identity. Huangs poems also inform us how Hansheng was shaped and represented in this important historical newspaper.
