Walking into the Mountain City Lane impregnated with the memory of the times, the images, text and audio a century ago have brought extraordinary sensory impact through deconstruction and reorganization. This is an encounter across great geographic distance and a Sino-German image dialogue over time and space.

On December 4, the opening ceremony of the photography exhibition of "The Southwest Now and Then"-“ A Sino-German Photography Dialogue" (Chongqing stop) was held in Mountain City Alley, Yuzhong District. The 100-plus photos on display not only reproduce China in the lens of Max Friedrich Weiss, the first German consul in Southwest China a century ago, but also Chinese and German photographic artists' contemporary records and future explorations. The exhibition will last until January 4, 2022.

Sebastian Dern, Vice Consul of the German Consulate General in Chengdu, Dai Ling, vice chairwoman of the CPPCC Chongqing Yuzhong District Committee, Fan Qing, director of the Consular Division of the Foreign Affairs Office of Chongqing Municipal People's Government, Huang Heng, chairman of Chongqing Yonghongzhizao Cultural Tourism Co., Ltd. and principal of Mountain City Alley, attended the opening ceremony of the photography exhibition.

Sebastian Dern said that the exhibition is a joint creation of Chinese and German culture. Through image deconstruction of the evolution and vicissitudes of history, culture and social ecology, the integration and interaction of Sino-German cooperation achievements and Sino-German arts in the past century could be fully savored and this image dialogue spanning a century has been eventually presented.

At the beginning of the 20th century, Max Friedrich Weiss, the first German consul in Southwest China, and his wife Hedwig recorded the real scene and local customs of Southwest China with cameras during their trips in Sichuan, Chongqing and Yunnan. "As the highlight of the exhibition, we were lucky to get the documentary filmed by Tarama Wyss, the offspring of the Weiss couple in Southwest China with the photo of their grandparents as the clue. According to the documentary Chinese Shoes, Max Friedrich Weiss also stayed in today's French Benevolence Hall in Mountain City Lane. The documentary will also be placed in the air raid shelter as a video installation to echo the exhibition." said curator Wang Yuanling.

It is introduced that in August this year, the famous German photographer Torsten Schumann and senior Chinese photographer Zhang Xiao, together with four photography enthusiasts from all over the country, conducted a three-day Sino-German photographer workshop in Southwest China. Continuing the logic of Weiss's works, through field shooting, they recorded the beauty of Southwest China again with their camera lens. The excellent works of the workshop are displayed together with the old photos of Weiss in this exhibition to display the cultural exchange and dialogue between China and Germany.

With the promotion of the German Consulate General in Chengdu, a myriad of images and documents left behind by Mr. Max Friedrich Weiss and his wife Hedwig during their tour in Southwest China from the end of the 19th century to the beginning of the 20th century were shown in the itinerant exhibition of "The Southwest Now and Then". As the place where Weiss once stayed, Chongqing is now chosen as the second stop of the "The Southwest Now and Then".

In the profound history of Chongqing, there is an existence that can never be ignored - air raid shelter. Chongqing air raid shelter cluster has been completely preserved in Mountain City Alley. It is said that as another highlight, in addition to the two-story exhibition space above the ground, the exhibition has combined with the underground air raid shelter for the first time. The photography exhibition extends to the air raid shelter, and the visitors may experience an underground "shelter exploration".

In addition, the participating Chinese and German artists Torsten Schumann, Zhang Xiao, Liu Xiaoye, Dong Yalin and Liu Xinghao shared their works and creative ideas via a photo viewing meeting, so as to promote cultural exchanges between China and Germany.
