Do you have dreams?Have you ever tried to make them come true?If you were to ask me those same questions, I could answer with a confident“yes”.

It began when I went to senior high school. There I met Ricky, my new English teacher from Canada. At first I didnt have the confidence to speak to Ricky. However, I noticed that Ricky paid no attention to my mistakes and that we were communicating. By talking to Ricky I began to learn about her country and its culture. Then I set myself the goal to travel and see the nation.

With the help of an international organisation, Ricky got two of the students in my school, me included, a chance to register as exchange students in a Canadian school. I told my parents about it. Although they were anxious, they advised me to follow my heart. It was my parents encouragement that gave me confidence. In fact Ricky had been worried about me, too. One worry was that I might get homesick in Canada. Another worry was about safety. If I wanted to travle around Canada, I would have to do it alone. When I told her I would be fine, Ricky smiled, called me a brave girl, and it was then that my dream started coming true.

I only got to stay one term, but I will never forget the lectures designed for us exchange students, the people I met, the places I explored, the things I saw and did, or even the food I ate. I wish I could have stayed a lot longer and traveled a lot more. So I study harder, speak to Ricky whenever I can, and probably any foreigner I come across, just to be ready for my next big dream.

I woke up this morning, excited but anxious, as today was the day. I would begin my journey of senior high school.

The school I attended is an all-female boarding school, which is the only single-sex school in this city. Some people say single-sex schools are better than mixed-sex ones in that they have classes specially designed for their male or female students. I am curious to know what such a school looks like. Thousands of thoughts flashed through my mind. Will I fit in?Will I make friends? Will I have nice teachers? What if I make a bad impression on the other girls? What if I cant concentrate in class as I did in junior high?

After breakfast, I set off with Mom sitting beside me and Dad driving the car. We were warmly received by a group of seniors at the school gate. I said goodbye to Mom and Dad there. Some of the seniors helped take my suitcase(手提箱)to the dorm, where I met my three roommates, Sally, Laura and Amanda. Only two of us have Chinese nationality while Sally is Korean and Laura American, who impressed me most with her beautiful eyes and sweet smile.

Since we had no classes in the morning, the four of us decided to explore our campus. Our school is beautiful with tall trees, bright flowers, nice-looking grassland and buildings of the southern Chinese style. A bulletin board(宣傳栏)we passed by shows a lot of activity photos and says“With more than 50 student organisations on campus, there is a community for every interest”. I took a photo of the name list of the organisations so that I could study them carefully this weekend before I choose to register with some. I am looking forward to improving myself through group activities.

D. Student organisations.

11. The paragraph following the text might talk about __________.

A. what activities would be held

B. what happened that afternoon

C. how to get along with roommates

D. how to study in senior high school

D

Ever since I can remember, I have stood out. When I was five years old, I jumped at the chance to give an encouraging speech to some workers in my town. Standing in front of a large audience didnt frighten me. When I entered the sixth grade, I became the classs monitor. By the time I was a third grader in junior high school, I was the president of my schools student government.

I am proud of all that I have done, but not everyone sees it the same way. When I decided that I was going to enter for a competition, most of my classmates would say,“Again?Youve already done two!Stop trying to show off!”I dont understand why they became so annoyed. Whats wrong with trying to improve myself?Whats wrong with trying something that makes me happy?Would they like me better if I were less outgoing; if I were more shy; if I took the same road that everyone else travels?Should I just let myself be pulled down?Maybe my life would be easier if I were more like them.

I have an American pen friend. I am very surprised when I hear stories about his life. He told me that in the United States, it is natural for students to be curious and question what they dont understand. Japanese students seldom ask questions because they worry what their classmates will think, but in the US people seem to be less afraid to stand out. Talking to him made me realize that my personality is not bad.

I know I stand out, but I no longer feel awkward about it. I have learned that as long as I have pleased myself, I shouldnt worry what other people think. I am happy with who I am and I will continue to stand out.
