Discussion on the Implementation of Ideological and Political Education in English Teaching in Higher Vocational Colleges

【Abstract】 The creative transformation from “ideological and political courses” to “ideological and political education in all courses” is an important way of guiding values orientation. Under such a background, ideological and political education becomes a new teaching task in all courses. This paper mainly discusses the implementation of ideological and political education in English teaching in higher vocational colleges, aiming to exploring effective teaching mechanism from the, perspective of combining ideological and political elements with language knowledge.

1. Overview of ideological and political education in English teaching
Integrating ideological and political elements with all kinds of subject courses is the outcome of education reform in the new period based on the demand of ideological and political education. Mainly treating morality as the fundamental task of education, it makes high requirements on teachers and teaching. Teachers should not only master the knowledge points of the curriculum, but also have a deep understanding of ideological and political elements. Teachers should permeate the ideological and moral education throughout teaching, which helps students to form a sound personality with excellent traditional virtues and spirit imperceptibly, and be able to practice the theory of socialism with Chinese characteristics. Ideological and political education also plays a positive role in promoting the subject course teaching, especially English teaching, through which students can have a clearer understanding of the difference between Chinese and western cultures, take more pride in our excellent traditional culture, and consciously spread it. It can also stimulate teachers to continuously improve their ability to educate.
2. The implementation of ideological and political education in English teaching in higher vocational colleges
2.1 Explore the textbook
Higher vocational English textbook contains not only basic knowledge of English, but also rich cultural connotation. Therefore, teachers should not end at the level of language teaching, but explore the ideas conveyed by language. Teachers can first dig into the textbook and find out relevant elements of ideological and political education, and then integrate them into the socialist core values. In terms of “college life”, how to get along with others can be found to help students understand friendliness, respect and independence. When learning about money and consumption, teachers can link it to correct money and consumption view.
2.2 Integrate ideological and political elements with language knowledge
English teachers in higher vocational colleges should not only be familiar with the textbook knowledge, but also fully understand the ideological and political education themselves. First of all, they should have a comprehensive understanding of the nature and law of ideological and political education, so as to carry out the relevant teaching objectives. Secondly, teachers should have sensitivity to the core socialist values, traditional Chinese virtues, patriotism and so on. For instance, when introducing western customs, they can bring in Chinese customs in contrast. As to teaching method, teachers can give students a task to discuss a topic together, so as to improve their independent learning ability and enhance team spirit.
2.3 Strengthen the course design
A reasonable course design is needed for the effective implementation of ideological and political education in teaching. Therefore, teachers should pay attention to every stage of teaching, such as the lead-in part, the learning of textbooks, the after-class tasks. For example, when studying the unit of “career”, teachers can make students to have an open discussion on their favorite jobs and their understanding of these jobs in the warming-up phase. The students may think about how to achieve their goal and develop the consciousness of working hard. After class, teachers can upload extra resources like a video “No Pains, No Gains”, to help students develop good moral quality unconsciously as well as master more English knowledge.
2.4 Give proper guidance according to the characteristics of students major
Higher vocational colleges aim to train skilled talents for the society. Therefore, teachers should give proper guidance by combining with students professional characteristics, so as to cultivate their good professional spirit. For example, during the study of “career”, teachers can join the discussion with students and give timely guidance based on the characteristics of different occupations. In addition, teachers can introduce important skills and qualities needed in a particular area and show some advanced figures so that students can have a deeper understanding of professional ethics and Craftmanship Spirit of Great Country.
3. Conclusion
In conclusion, on the basis of ensuring students mastery of English knowledge, English teachers should contribute to improving students ideological and moral qualities and promote their all-round development. There are a lot of ideological and political elements in the English curriculum in higher vocational colleges. Referring to the characteristics of students major, teachers should deeply dig into the textbook and closely integrate the ideological and political elements into English teaching.
