1. Introduction
With the development of art, visual skills have become a new way to enrich the content and inject new ideas into works. Furthermore, diverse visual angles concept changes people's visual ways and broadens the way to understand the nature of things. The aims of this report are to discuss the diverse visual angles concept in Eight Broken and its application in advertising with a social issue, moreover, the objectives are to break a traditional connotation and create an innovative expression for an advertising for depression.
2. Eight Broken Plate
There is a Chinese Pastel Dragon Porcelain Plate (see Figure 1), which is also named Eight Broken Plate due to its applied artistic technique. Eight Broken is regarded as‘Chinese collagesbecause of its disorganized fragments, which shows the broken ancient cultural relics. In Chinese culture ‘eight is a symbol of good luck and auspiciousness, and‘brokenmeans incomplete but implies the potential for perfection in traditional culture, also there is an old saying that states: ‘to break is great for next year. Therefore it shows that happiness and disaster depend on each other, and can be in mutual transformation (Xie, 2014, p.196). Like every coin has two sides, the entirely different implied meaning of‘brokenis dialectic thoughts in ancient Chinese philosophy, which can be interrelated and transformed, inspiring people to look at things from multiple visual angles.
3. The social issue
Equally important, people are becoming more dependent on the Internet with its increasing popularity. They prefer to indulge in the online world to resolve their inner loneliness, rather than participate in social activities in real life, even though Internet addiction has been confirmed a certain relationship with depression. According to GBD (2015), depression affected approximately 3% of the worlds population in 2015, therefore this social issue threatens modern peoples mental health and should be attended to.
4. The relation to advertising
To call for attention to this social issue, there is a public service advertising “The Hidden Pain”(see Figure 2) created by Samaritans of Singapore, a suicide prevention organization. On one side, it is a positive phrase“Im fine”. On the contrary, the copy“save me”reveals an opposite sentiment and hidden feelings of depression. Pain isnt always obvious, this advertising applies diverse visual angles concept to hide messages, which only revealed when audiences change their visual angles by inverting it. Some people seem to have a strong outside, however, perhaps their fragile inside is crying in desperation. In this way, this advertising reminds the public to care for the depressed people around them and help them save a life before its too late.
5. Conclusion
In summary, this report discusses the diverse visual angles concept through the name of Eight Broken Plate first and applies its way to a multi-function wooden holders shape. Then it focuses on Internet addiction issue and finally, it is related to a depression advertising by inverted angles. Things are necessarily not comprehensive from a single angle, thus a combination of diverse visual angles can appreciate the connotation of works dialectically. As a trend, diverse visual angles concept creates the innovative visual experience, and enables art to enter a more diversified developmental stage.
