BUKKEKJERKA is a main rest station for the Norwegian Scenic Routes along the western coastal road of Andøya in Northern Norway. The project facilitates for visitors to stop and rest, and to explore the nature, history and geology of the area. The name of the project is derived from the characteristic mountain formation called"Bukkekjerka" that is located on site, between the road and the sea.
The area has a striking beauty, and a strong diversity: the landscape is dramatic with the fierce North Sea meeting the shore and later steep mountains. There Sami tales and monuments connected to different parts of the land, remnants of an old fishing community, old lighthouses towards east, and consecrated ground and unique geological formations to the south - all surrounding the rock formation known as "Bukkekjerka".
We wanted to highlight the diversity of the site by introducing several, dispersed elements into the landscape: Parking and service functions with toilets to the north(Fig.3), a bonfire by the shore, a free-standing bench on the mountain, picnic areas, paths, and a footbridge that shows the way out towards the lighthouses(Fig.4). Furthest south is a rest area on consecrated ground(Fig.5), used for an annual open-air church service as well as weddings and other gatherings.
Our intention is that the different elements are unveiled and experienced gradually, encouraging further exploration and experience of the inherent qualities of the place.
The main architectural expression consists of folded concrete, inspired by the jagged mountain peaks in the area. We have desired the project to appear more like landscape and sculptural elements than a building. Variations within the same materiality arise from different functions, and their encounter with different landscape situations. The built elements are very much adapted to the existing terrain.
The service building is a more refined part of the project, consisting of one-way mirror glass and highly polished, acid-resistant steel. The service building has two public toilets and a technical room. The mirror glass to the north allows visitors to enjoy a full view over the open sea and mountain peaks in privacy, without being seen from the exterior. In addition, the mirrored glass and polished steel reflect the surrounding landscape, both in the interior and exterior, and gives a sense of gliding

The typical older, Norwegian vernacular toilet is in part the inspiration for the design: the experience of sitting partly outdoors relieving oneself, while having fresh air and a view to nature. At the same time, we have been inspired by mirroring as a phenomenon. The mirroring makes the built melt in with the surroundings and ffiers a new and shifting experiences of the place.
Reflections and colours from the landscape outside contribute to a shifting spatial experience, and to the interiors being perceived as quite calm and warm even though consisting of glass, steel and concrete.
The site is remotely located, in coastal climate.Wind can be very strong, often with gale force. Most of the project is built in open air, planed in a way so different parts of the facility ffier shelter from the wind, depending on the wind direction. The service building with toilets is the only part of the facility that is indoors.
The building is open to the general public and has maintenance only once a week due to its remote location. The facility opened June 2018 and has experienced many more visitors the first season than expected. Despite numerous visitors, the maintenance crew reported that the facility was very nicely kept, without littering. Visitors seem to have shown appreciation and respect, taking mutual responsibility for what is mutually shared. We see this as a great compliment to the project.□

Comments
ZHONG Huicheng: The use of mirror effect gives me surprise. Within the concrete body, mirror glass and polished steel are used carefully, as a beautiful finishing touch, absorbing and releasing the beauty of the surrounding landscape. The mirror walls make adjacent changing environment more mysterious. Along with folding and framing of space, some mirrored walls "disappear" as people approach. Within the restroom, the combination of translucent glass and polished mirror steel made the whole interior space full of landscape as if people are immersed within it.
ZHONG Qiao: Continuously folded concrete is closed to the colour and shape of the rock formation around the project while maintains its conspicuousness and identity, which is the best design strategy of service facility in natural landscape area. The simulation of experience of using the toilet semi-outdoor and the use of mirror reflecting landscape to eliminate the volume and obscure the boundaries are also the best interpretation of the locality of the building. Those dispersed artificial landscape elements are instrumental to strongly encourage the tourists to explore the site, gradually lead people to experience the unique geology of the area, and keep the natural resources undestroyed successfully at the same time. The "rest" of the rest station includes not only sitting down and relaxing, but also exploring and discovering - it inspires people to be more open to a broader sense of cognition and communication.
