Dr. Gibbs trees

When I was young, I had an old neighbor named Dr. Gibbs. He was the nicest doctor that I had ever known. When Dr. Gibbs wasnt saving lives, he was planting trees. His house covered ten acres and his goal was to make it a forest.

The good doctor had some interesting and strange ways about planting. He never watered his trees and he always beat them with a rolledup newspaper — to wake them up and push them to grow faster.

I didnt understand why he did this to his trees and one day, I asked him for the reason. “Watering plants spoils them,” Dr. Gibbs explained. “If you water them, the trees will grow weaker and weaker. So you have to make things hard for them.” Dr. Gibbs also talked about how watering trees made for shallow roots. Those trees that werent watered enough had to grow deeper into the ground in search of moisture, which brought them stronger lives.

To be honest, I didnt quite understand his theories. So I tried to plant some trees by myself. Every day, I watered them and took good care of them. I wanted to prove that my trees would grow much better than his.

Twenty five years later, I came back to my hometown to check those trees. Things were beyond my expectations. Dr. Gibbs trees were strong and robust. My trees, however, were almost dying. Those trees that hadnt been watered enough and had been beaten hard were much more lively.

Dr. Gibbs theory suddenly came back to me. Adversity and hardship seemed to have benefited Dr. Gibbs trees in a way that comfort and ease could never offer.

Since then, I changed my wishes for my son. I used to hope that his life would be smooth and easy. But hell have to encounter hardships anyway, and hardships shape him into a better person. So Ive been praying that he has the strength and courage to face everything.
