In Denmark parents put gifts around their childs bed when the child is sleeping at night. When the child wakes up in the morning, the gifts will be the first thing the child sees. In Sweden and also in Finland, the birthday child gets breakfast in bed! In Holland, the birthday child gets a much more important gift on their birthday. Two little boys were at play one day when a fairy suddenly appeared before them and said, “I have been sent to give you New Year presents.” She handed to each child a package, and was gone immediately.
Carl and Philip opened the packages and found in them two beautiful books, with pages as pure and white as the snow when it first falls.
Many months passed and the fairy came again to the boys. “I have brought you each a new book,” she said, “and will take the first ones back to Father Time who sent them to you.”
“May I keep mine a little longer?” asked Philip. “I have hardly thought about it lately. Id like to paint something on the last page.”
“No,” said the fairy, “I must take it just as it is.”
“I wish that I could look through mine just once,” said Carl, “I have only seen one page at a time. I can never open the book at more than one place each day.”
“You can look at your books,” said the fairy. She lit two little lamps for them and by the light they saw the pages as she turned them.
The boys were surprised. Were they the same books she had given them a year ago? Where were the clean, white pages? On some of the pages there were ugly blots(斑点). Others were decorated with beautiful flowers.
“Who did this?” they asked. “Every page was white as we opened it, yet now there is not a blank place in the whole book!”
“Let me explain some of the pictures to you,” said the fairy, “Each pretty thing in your books came on its page when you were good.”
“But what makes this blot?” asked Philip.
“All these blots that look so ugly were made when you were naughty.”
“Oh, if we could only have the books again!” said Carl and Philip.
“That is impossible,” said the fairy. “See! They are dated for this year, and they must now go back into Father Times bookcase, but I have brought you each a new one. The great pyramids of Egypt were built more than 4000 years ago. For thousands of years, the pyramids were the largest buildings in the world. Because the pyramids were so big, it took a lot of time and work to build them.
The first step in building a pyramid was to pick a place. Then architects(建筑学家)and engineers worked to design the pyramid and make sure that it would be strong and safe.
There was a lot of stone in Egypt. The workers often easily found the stone that they needed, but they had to dig the stones from the ground and cut them into large blocks using only hand tools.
It was not an easy job to move stones to the pyramid place because most stones weighed more than 2,000 kilograms. Each stone had to be pulled there by large groups of people, and sometimes, on boats along the nearby Nile River.
The stones for the base of the pyramid were placed straight onto the ground. It was too hard for the workers to lift the heavy stones higher, ramps(坡道)were built so that the stones could be pulled up from the base level. When this new level was finished, the size of the ramp was increased so that work could begin on the next level above. Sometimes, ramps were built between the levels as well. This process went on until the levels reached a peak at the top and the pyramid was finished.
Passages(通道)and special rooms called chambers were built inside. Chambers were made to put the mummies(木乃伊)and valuable goods. Passages allowed the workers to get in and out of the pyramid to work in the chambers.
Finally, the inside walls were usually painted with scenes. The passages were filled with huge stones, and the openings were closed off. The outside of the pyramids was covered in a kind of white stone.
