An Empirical Study of English Verb Errors Made by Tibetan College Students, by KANG Hong, p.17

The study aims to explore types of verb errors made by Tibetan college students and their possible reasons. By means of questionnaire surveys, tests and interviews among 105 Tibetan-English majors, it reveals that verb errors are mainly caused by interlingual, intralingual and non-lingual interference, more errors are intralingual in origin rather than interlingual. There is a decline in the number of interlingual and intralingual errors from Grade One to Grade Three. The students make verb errors mainly in 4 specific areas: tenses, non-predicate verbs, subject-verb agreement and verb phrases. The paper is a reliable reference for the English teaching and research of the Tibetan students.

Three Dimensions of CALL Research Perspectives—A Review of the Related Studies Abroad, by SHI Xiaoling, p.28

A lot of research has been conducted in computer-assisted language learning and teaching (CALL) in our country, however, the majority of them cannot be devoid of the limitations in research perspectives. By contrast, the researchers abroad have conducted CALL research from multidimentional perspectives. Based on the examples in the research literature, this paper mainly comments on the dimensions of CALL research perspectives, namely, the learner-based perspective, the environment-based perspective and design-based perspective in the hope of bringing some insights to CALL researchers in our country.

With the current on-going reform of College English teaching and English Test in Chinas colleges, most colleges manage to set a network English learning environment to assist English teaching as well as formative assessment to cultivate students independent learning ability. This paper tries to analyze the achievements and problems occurred in the authors school under this environment, and tries to find out effective ways to improve the problems.

A Study on the Training Mode of College Students English Contest Competence—A Case Study of the Pre-contest Training of the Final of 2012 National English Contest for College Students Class C, by XIANG Yu, p.36

National English Contest for College Students, as the only contest activity to develop college students ability to use English in a well-rounded way, is helpful to improve students language proficiency, meet students individual needs, and cultivate students sense of competition and psychological quality. Since 2011, Hubei University of Technology has specifically made pre-contest training plans for students who enter the final of English contest, in order to cultivate their English contest competence. This paper, by use of questionnaire survey and case interview, investigates the attitude of the 22 finalists of 2012 National English Contest for College Students Class C. It discovers the pre-contest training is widely welcomed by students, but still needs to be improved. Therefore, suggestions have been put forward so as to provide significance for future pre-contest training.

The Study of the Feedback in the EAP Course, by LI Yang, p.39

English for Academic Purpose Course has been widely applied in various countries and regions, and it serves as an efficient English learning method to facilitate learners to reach their academic goals. Nevertheless, how to make good use of the EAP feedback and made students understand and use feedback effectively remains a question. This paper first introduces the background of EAP feedback, and then emphasizes its current problems and limitations, and finally suggests ways for improvement.

The Research and Application of Keyword Method, by JIN Xian, p.50

It is found in the research on Keyword Method both from home and abroad that L2 learners can acquire and retain the link between target words form and meaning effectively by using Keyword Method. Although Keyword Method is limited in some areas, it can be used as a crucial complementary in vocabulary acquisition when necessary and applicable.

A Research on Bi-directional Culture Teaching from the Perspective of Cultural Interaction, by FENG Liyan & ZHENG Xia, p.68

Cultural factors received more and more attention in foreign language teaching, while Chinese culture has always been neglected during the whole process, which lead to the Chinese Culture Aphasia in the cross-culture communication. In this article, based on Kramschs perspective of cultural interaction, a bi-directional culture teaching model has been presented in which the culture of a target language and our Chinese culture play the same important role. Then the teaching principles and strategies of the new model have been discussed in details. Thus we can help our students overcome the Chinese Culture Aphasia in the cross-culture communication.

Investigating Students Attitudes towards New College English: A Needs Analysis Perspective, by SONG Liqiang, p.78

The present paper firstly analyzes the designing principles of the textbook New College English(2nd Edition) which demonstrates great value for College English teaching and reform. Then, it conducts an investigation into students attitudes towards this textbook from a needs analysis perspective. The result shows that this textbook still has some aspects to be improved. Proper adjustment could make this textbook more effective in English language teaching in China.

This study employs a quantitative method to investigate pre-service EFL (English as a Foreign Language) teachers beliefs. The focus of this article is to know the total situation of EFL pre-service teachers beliefs and whether gender difference has any significant influence on teachers beliefs.

Action Research on Vocational English Teaching in Sports Polytechnics, by DENG Yanlin, p.132

Vocational colleges English teaching aims to cultivate students vocational English abilities. In order to improve the teaching quality of sports polytechnics English course, this research tried to apply the new teaching model, called “vocational teaching way”. This action research took one whole year. Before doing this research, the researcher used questionnaire to investigate students English learning situation, including foundation, learning methods, learning customs, learning requirements and so on. Then, according to students real situation, the researcher adjusted the teaching model. Through the whole years research, the English course has achieved great success; the new teaching model has obtained positive feedback from the students.

On Tenor and the Use of Hedges, by WANG Tian, p.160

The use of hedge is an important strategy in English writing, because it can show the writersattitudes to both propositions and readers, leave room for discussion and show the writers scientific honesty and respect to their peers. Based on the classification of hedges, this study was an attempt to compare the hedges in medical academic paper and scientific news. A corpus was established by selecting 11 medical academic papers and 11 scientific news from well-accepted foreign medical journals and health columns. The findings show that hedges are distributed differently across the two registers. A knowledge of these differences will inform learning and teaching of English writing in one way or another.

On English Sentence Accent, by GUO Dawei, p.169

English sentence accent is predictable to a certain extent in that it is put where the speaker thinks that is the important information. This short paper mainly focuses on the sentence accent of the two broad categories of the content words and function words and gives a survey of the general characteristic of sentence accent of spoken English.

A Study of the Classification of Pragmatic Markers and the Analysis of Their Application in Discourse, by JI Xiaohong, p.179

Pragmatic markers comprise a functional not a syntactic category. Pragmatic markers signal the speakers direct communicative intention. There are four groups of pragmatic markers:basic pragmatic markers,commentary pragmatic markers,parallel pragmatic markers and discourse pragmatic markers. Adverbs and verbs used as commentary markers function in a way other than they are traditionally viewed; they typically occur in sentence-initial position and some expressions and structures can be used to replace a single pragmatic marker.

Text Difference and Coping Strategy Selection in Simultaneous Interpretation, by JIA Ying, p.188

In recent years, skills of simultaneous interpretation (SI) have been widely discussed by numerous scholars at home. However, studies on the application of SI skills in texts of different functions are still lacking at present. On the basis of the recording transcripts in simulation training of C-E simultaneous interpretation, this paper conducts comparative analyses on the coping strategies employed in informative, expressive and vocative texts respectively with the combination of target language quality. It is found that selection of coping strategies in SI is related to text difference, adjustment of coping strategies for texts of different functions helps to improve the overall SI quality.

An Analysis of Subtitle Translation Based on Desperate Housewives, by LIU Libin, p.201

This thesis is based on the Skopos theory, and selects Desperate Housewives as the example. After a meticulous analysis, we can conclude that the translation strategies influence the aim of translation. The translator should select the most suitable translation strategy so as to drive the practice of subtitle translation, as well as highlight the charisma of the films and television programs. Ultimately, it helps to push forward the cultural communication among different nations.
