Big Thaw
A big thaw, whether it marks the end of winter or only a break, has the drama of eons in it. One day the land lies white and silent under ice and snow;then a warm wind comes. Temperatures climb. The ice grip relaxes. Water, the concerted melt of all the hill-sides,begins to flow. You hear it.You see it in a mist over the thinning snow. You feel it soggy underfoot. And you know you are witnessing,on a minor scale, what happened when the glaciers began to melt back. One winter's ice age is beginning to go.
A day passes, and a night, and great bare patches show in the pasture. The rocks on the hill-side are in sight, black and wet, centers of warmth.Fence posts stand in deepening hollows in the snow.Beneath the ice in the gully you can hear the brook begin to talk;and if you follow the brook you will see it open to the sky in a few places, where it has eaten away the ice. Rivulets from the whole hillside have concentrated to clear the brooks channel. They talk in many voices.
Another night of warmth and the hollows have become ponds. The brook leaps, now, its channel clear, and the big river comes to life. The ice in it begins to move,to break into floes and shards.
Thus rivers come to life when the great ice sheets begin to recede. The pasture shows faint green at the grass roots a-long the brook. The hillsides,by afternoon, are bare of snow.
You watch the river and listen to the brook and feel the softness of the sodden earth with its icy so-lidity untouched a few inches down. But you forget the deeper ice and look at the trees, expecting to find fat buds.Expecting to see flocks of spring birds, you look for fresh miracles, as if the big melt itself were not miracle enough.
