Max Han is helping to bring aboutenvironmental changes through YUFE（Youths United for Earth）. When he was19， Han cofoundedthe grassroots organizationwith his friend， Nurfatin Hamzah.The group＇s aim is to create a better planet.

Now 22， Han is a graduate student inenvironmental science at Yale University.He grew up in Malaysia， a country inSoutheast Asia of more than 33 millionpeople. I recently spoke with Han to learnabout the inspiration behind his environmentalefforts. “YUFE began with animportant observation： People are moremotivated to seek change when they learnabout local environmental issues. Manyyoung Malaysians were familiar withmelting ice caps in Antarctica and thethreat to polar bears. But they knew littleabout deforestation （滥伐森林） inMalaysia，” Han said. “We need to startlocalizing our climate narratives （叙述）since people are more likely to act uponissues that are familiar to them，” Han toldme. “They＇ll fight to save the things theylove.”

YUFE＇s mission is to educate kidsabout environmental challenges and inspirecollective action. “Whatever we lack inexperience， we make up for it with passion.We just need to be empowered，” he said.

This year， Han received the prestigiousDiana Award. The annual award wasestablished in memory of Diana， Princessof Wales， who died in a tragic accident in1997. It honors outstanding young peoplefor their social activism or humanitarianwork.“ The Diana Award has significantlyraised awareness of our efforts，” Han said.Han believes in the need to safeguard theplanet for future generations.
