If you live in certain parts of the world, you will see something magical happen each fall. It is the changing of the color of the leaves on many different trees. Each year deciduous (落叶的) trees go through a process in which their green leaves become bright yellow, gold, orange and red before turning brown and falling onto the ground.

Photosynthesis (光合作用) is the process for trees to make their food. The leaves of a tree are where photosynthesis happens because the chlorophyll (叶绿素) in the leaves is what makes photosynthesis possible. Chlorophyll also has another job—it is what makes leaves green. When the seasons change in places where deciduous trees grow and the days get shorter and the weather gets colder, it is harder for the chlorophyll in the leaves to make the food needed to stay green. So instead of making more food, the leaves start using food they have stored away for this time of year.

As the leaves use the food that has been stored away, cells form at the bottom of each leaf. These cells act like a door between the leaf and the rest of the tree—a door that closes very slowly and doesnt shut until all the leafs food is gone. While this is happening, the colors in the leaves of the trees are able to show through. In fact, the red, yellow, gold and orange colors are hiding in the leaves all summer long. The colors just cant be seen in the summer because of all the chlorophyll in the leaves.

You might be wondering how the rest of the tree keeps growing when the weather turns cold and the leaves die and fall. Doesnt the rest of the tree need the food made by the trees leaves?

Not really. The tree trunk and branches get food from the roots of the tree. The roots supply water, vitamins and minerals they get from the ground. Trees need sunshine and warm weather to grow, but they also need time to rest like bears that sleep during the winter.

1. Why do leaves change colors?

A. They save energy to stay alive.                       B. They cant store food away.

C. They get used to the cold weather.                  D. They cant get enough energy from the sun.

2. Leaves fall off deciduous trees when___.

A. there is no sunlight any longer                        B. the chlorophyll in the leaves stops working

C. cells start to form at the bottom of each leaf  D. the food stored away in the leaves is used up

3. How do trees survive in winter?

A. By storing food in roots.                                 B. By storing food in branches.

C. By getting food from the ground.                    D. By making the most of the dead leaves.

4. What is the purpose of the text?

A. To study how trees survive in winter.             B. To tell us the importance of photosynthesis.

C. To explain why leaves change colors and fall.                                       D. To show the changes of trees in the whole year.

In the mid-1990s, Tom Bissell taught English as a volunteer in Uzbekistan. He left after seven months, physically broken and having lost his mind. A few years later, still attracted to the country, he returned to Uzbekistan to write an article about the disappearance of the Aral Sea.

His visit, however, ended up involving a lot more than that. Hence this book, Chasing the Sea: Lost Among the Ghosts of Empire in Central Asia, talks about a road trip from Tashkent to Karakalpakstan, where millions of lives have been destroyed by the slow drying up of the sea. It is the story of an American traveling to a strange land, and of the people he meets on his way: Rustam, his translator, a lovely 24-year-old who picked up his colorful English in California, Oleg and Natasha, his hosts in Tashkent, and a string of foreign aid workers.

This is a quick look at life in Uzbekistan, made of friendliness and warmth, but also its darker side of society. In Samarkand, Mr Bissell admires the architectural wonders, while on his way to Bukhara he gets a taste of police methods when suspected of drug dealing. In Ferghana, he attends a mountain funeral (葬禮) followed by a strange drinking party. And in Karakalpakstan, he is saddened by the dust storms, diseases and fishing boats stuck miles from the sea.

Mr Bissell skillfully organizes historical insights and cultural references, making his tale a well-rounded picture of Uzbekistan, seen from Western eyes. His judgment and references are decidedly American, as well as his delicate stomach. As the author explains, this is neither a travel nor a history book, or even a piece of reportage. Whatever it is, the result is a fine and vivid description of the purest of Central Asian traditions.

1. What made Mr Bissell return to Uzbekistan?

A. His friends invitation.                                             B. His interest in the country.

C. His love for teaching.                                             D. His desire to regain health.

2. What does the underlined word “that” in Paragraph 2 refer to?

A. Making friends with the local people.        B. Taking a guided tour in Central Asia.

C. Working as a volunteer in Uzbekistan.        D. Writing an article about the Aral Sea.

3. What word can best describe Mr Bissells road trip in Uzbekistan?

A. Romantic.                                           B. Eventful.                         C. Pleasant.                                                 D. Dangerous.

4. What is the purpose of the text?

A. To introduce a book.                                        B. To remember a writer.

C. To explain a cultural phenomenon.                 D. To recommend a travel destination.

B

Plastic waste is rolling over land and sea, which has inspired numerous potential solutions. Some involve inventing our way out of the mess by creating new kinds of natural materials that will harmlessly degrade (降解) if theyre thrown away. Others say it might be quicker to change peoples throwaway behavior instead.

Among the first group is Stephen Mayfield. Hes a chemist who figured out how to turn various kinds of algae into raw plastic. Then he turns it into stuff people want.

Mayfield is a lifelong surfer whose lab in San Diego is in walking distance from the beach. His surfboards got him some attention, but thats not what he really wants to make.

It was a surfing trip to the Maldives islands in the Indian Ocean that persuaded him to focus on something else. One day, he asked his local hosts to take him to their most remote island. “And when I got to the windward side of the island, it was covered with dead flip-flops (人字拖),” Mayfield recalls.

So Mayfield now makes flip-flops from algae grown in tanks. What makes them special is that they can degrade if theyre left out in the environment.

Mayfield says theres some traditional petroleum-based polymer (聚合物) there, too. But all of the shoes will biodegrade into harmless materials. It just needs the right bacteria and moisture to break it down. Within about two years shoes will completely be gone.

Potentially the shoes being trash for two years isnt perfect, but Mayfield says its better than decades or even longer. The real problem, he says, is that new technology is a tough sell. Manufacturers are reluctant to take a risk on a new, unfamiliar product. “I cannot convince them,” he says. “The only thing that can convince them is the market.”

5. Why does Mayfield turn algae into raw plastic?

A. To test the use of algae.                         B. To change peoples behavior.

C. To help protect the environment.               D. To make use of the sea resources.

6. What made Mayfield decide to make flip-flops with algae?

A. His interest in surfing.                                B. His will to make surfboards.

C. Working in a lab in San Diego.                   D. Seeing dead flip-flops on the island.

7. What is the advantage of the flip-flops Mayfield makes?

A. They are easy to make.                          B. They can be recycled.

C. They are made from waste materials.            D. They can degrade in less than two years.

8. What is the text mainly about?

A. A man trying to save the ocean.               B. A kind of eco-friendly shoes.

C. A way to help protect the environment.        D. A debate on how to deal with plastics.

At dusk, the weather became colder while the sky was gray. A moment later, the snowflakes began to fall quietly. Soon the land before my eyes was all white, like a beautiful blanket. Then it snowed more and more heavily. The houses and trees were all covered with white quilts.

The next morning, it stopped snowing and cleared up. I went into the yard. Looking far away, I saw a beautiful silver world. A group of children were playing happily, having snowball fights and building snowmen. Cold as it was, nobody felt cold in the white world.
