Esther Mentzer was born in New York. Her upbringing was a modest (朴素的) one; her father owned a hardware store. Much of her time was spent in trying to make ends meet in the hardware store.

It was while working in this store that Esther got her first taste of business. Until World War Ⅰ, Esther had always wanted to be an actress, dreaming of her “name in lights, flowers, handsome men”.

After the War, Esthers uncle, John Schotz came to live with the family. This would prove to be a turning point in the young Esthers life. Schotz was a chemist who had devoted most of his life to creating “secret” skincare products. Esther joined him.

In 1930, she married Joseph Lauder and her name became Estee Lauder, when she was 22 years old. Lauders dreams had never quite subsided (消退) and her husband supported her. In 1946, the two finally decided to go official, and Estee Lauder Cosmetics (化妝品) was founded.

She believed that beauty is an attitude, and when you look after yourself properly, it would be a winning attitude. If you looked beautiful on the outside, Lauder believed you would feel beautiful on the inside, and from there, the possibilities are endless.

Estee Lauder died in 2004, but her contribution is remembered. Today Estee Lauder is a recognized brand name in over 110 countries. “Why are all brides beautiful?” she asked. “Because on their wedding day they care about how they look. There are no ugly women—only women who dont care or who dont believe theyre attractive.” Beauty is a state of mind and Lauder believed that her products could help anyone achieve that state of mind.

Where do you find beauty? One American photographer is finding beauty in unexpected places. And a new documentary about his work might help change the traditional standards of “who” is beautiful.

Rick Guidotti put aside his career as a fashion photographer to turn his lens to people living with genetic, physical and behavioral differences. He said what changed his perception of beauty was a chance encounter with an albino (患白化病的) girl.

“As an artist, I dont see beauty just on covers of magazines. I see it everywhere. So it was my initial intention that opened my eyes a little wider,” said Guidotti.

Guidotti has created Positive Exposure, a not-for-profit organization that uses photography and video to transform public perceptions and promote a world where differences are celebrated. Guidotti and Positive Exposure are featured in a new documentary called On Beauty.

The cast and crew recently hosted a screening at Georgetown University in Washington. One of the women featured in the film is Jayne Waithera. “I never thought I was beautiful because nobody said that to me, but meeting him was my profound moment. I remember that particular day he took my picture and I felt so good like I felt theres somebody who really loves me and sees me for who I am,” said Waithera.

The documentary is the idea of producer Joanna Rudnick. After seeing Guidottis photos, she decided to tell his story. Rudnick and Guidotti are traveling from city to city to promote On Beauty. “As we travel from community to community, were taking photographs and were encouraging individuals with a positive sense of who they are. Theyre seeing beauty in their reflection but were also encouraging their families and they in turn are encouraging their communities as well,” said Guidotti.

1. What made Guidotti change his understanding of beauty?

A. An albino girl.                                                 B. His job as a fashion photographer.

C. Influence from his co-workers.              D. The beauty on the covers of magazines.

2. What can we learn about Positive Exposure?

A. It promotes awareness of beauty.              B. It brings advantages to Guidotti.

C. It makes documentaries more popular.        D. It welcomes differences in the world.

3. What can we learn from what Waithera said?

A. Pictures of beauty were popular with people.

B. What she experienced has shaped her life greatly.

C. It was good for people to appreciate the real beauty.

D. Photographs gave people a positive sense of society.

4. What word can best describe Guidotti?

A. Talented.           B. Generous.               C. Determined.       D. Independent.

Spanish fashion brand Zara sparked a fierce debate after releasing its latest campaign featuring a Chinese model with freckles. Actually, there are some different beauty standards between the East and the West.

In East Asia, freckles might be considered a “destructive (毀灭性的) weakness” for celebrities, especially actors or singers. Generally speaking, freckles are more likely to appear if people are out in the sun frequently, and most East Asian women avoid the sun as best they can.

Having freckles, instead, is a trademark for unconventional beauty in the Western world, and some call freckles “angel kisses”. For most Westerners, having freckles is no longer just something you have to live with; instead, it is something to be desired. After all, not everyone is lucky enough to have freckles.

When it comes to skin colors, it seems Western and Chinese beauty standards dontsee eye-to-eye. Many Chinese think girls who have fair skin are more beautiful. However, many Westerners think girls with tanned skin are prettier.

Young, girly feature or hot and mature feature? Women with cute, girly features to some degree represent Asias beauty standards. Most women in Asia try their best to stay young accordingly. Unlike Chinese girls, Western girls think a more mature look shows independence and uniqueness. The superhero Wonder Woman is an ideal type for most.

As ties continue to grow between China and the West, it is unavoidable that these beauty standards develop. But one thing is for sure—no matter how you look, you are who you are, and that should be satisfaction enough.

5. What do most Western people think of having freckles?

A. It is something unbearable.              B. It is a destructive weakness.

C. It is something to wish for.                D. It is a symbol of traditional beauty.

6. What does the underlined phrase “see eye-to-eye” mean in Paragraph 4?

A. Have the same opinion.                     B. Recognize their strengths.

C. Misunderstand each other.                D. Argue against one another.

7. Why do Western girls prefer to appear mature?

A. They are eager to grow up.                B. They want to look independent and unique.

C. They hope to gain popularity in Asia.           D. They admire Wonder Woman very much.

8. What is the text mainly about?

A. What Zaras beauty standard is.                      B. Why Chinese people dont like freckles.

C. What causes the different beauty standards.   D. How Easterners and Westerners think of beauty.
