How to Plan Your Routes to Avoid Busy Places

Whether you are a beginner or already a regular runner, these apps will come in handy for planning routes that avoid busy places on your next run.

Strava

Just put in whether you're running or cycling, how far you'd like to go and whether you're keen (热切)to avoid hills, the app will then suggest a number of routes near you, based on where other runners have been. It is a good way to see running routes you might not have explored.

Komoot

As you plan the route, it'll work out the distance of your run and give you the option to input your running speed, allowing the app to work out how long the route shall take you.

Map my run

Map my run gives runners the option (选择)to plan their own route, or the ability to search through popular running routes near you, which is even more helpful for beginners. The app gives you the option of saving your favorite routes and accessing them on the app if you get lost mid-run.

OS Maps

OS Maps, another hugely popular map-building platform, is pretty high-tech when it comes to choosing a running route. You'll need a subscription (订阅)to get some of the features, but using the free app you can find local running routes. There are almost two million routes stored in the routes database, and many of them are free.

Years ago, I volunteered at a homeless shelter in Los Angeles, handing out food. Once I got talking with Albert, a tall and skinny young guy in line. He said he liked my socks. “Want to see mine?”he joked, lifting his leg. He was barefoot. I felt a sinking feeling in my stomach.

The next day, after work, I stopped at Ross and filled up my truck with socks. The following early morning, I drove over to Santa Monica's Palisades Park, which is a common destination for homeless people.

I took one of the bags from my trunk. It was still dark out. I headed for a group of three men, standing around a tree, probably using it as a windbreaker. Two were asleep under heavy blankets (毯子),and the third was digging through his collection. As I walked toward him, he watched me, perhaps questioning my motives (动机).“I thought you guys might need some fresh new socks,”I said, handing him a pair. He looked confused at first but took them and said, “Thank you.”I gave him two more pairs for his friends.

I moved on. An hour later, I had given out all the socks. Most people were sleeping, and I felt like Santa. I knew that when they wake up they would find a very meaningful present.

That was nine years ago. Every week I'll hand out as many socks as I can. If I'm on vacation or on a business trip for more than a week, I bring a bag of socks with me and hand them out to the homeless on the streets in other states and countries.

It's extremely satisfying to operate “under the radar(雷達)”to help make some people's lives a little bit easier. Part of me hopes to see Albert out there one of these days, but even if I don't, I like to think one of the pairs will find him.

24. How did the author feel when he saw Albert was barefoot?

A. Sorry.B. Regretful.C. Homesick.D. Embarrassed.

25. What is Ross most probably?

A. A store.B. A garage.C. A public park.D. A homeless shelter.

26. What does the author think to be especially satisfying?

A. Spending early morning at a park.B. Making weekends as holidays.

C. Playing Santa in public.D. Helping others silently.

27. What can be the best title for the text?

A. A Unique Experience at a Homeless ShelterB. The Easy Way Out of Helping the Poor

C. Satisfactory Return from KindnessD. Unexpected Gifts to the Homeless

The Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco, California is one of the world's most beautiful bridges. It is also one of the most visited places in the world. More than 1,800 hundred million vehicles have used the bridge since it opened more than 70 years ago.

The bridge was painted “International Orange”because that color went well with the natural surroundings. The color also is easier to see in the heavy fog that often covers the area. But the Golden Gate Bridge was not named for its orange color. It was named for the body of water that it crosses, the Golden Gate Strait (海峡),which is the entrance to the San Francisco Bay from the Pacific Ocean.

Planning for the bridge began in the 1920s when the area around San Francisco was growing. People living in the area needed another way to get to the city besides small ferries (渡船).Joseph Strauss was the chief engineer for the project. Work began in 1933. Mr Strauss demanded the strongest safety protections in the history of bridge building. These included the first use of “hard hats”to protect the workers' heads and special glasses to protect their eyes. A special safety net was suspended (懸挂)under the bridge. This net saved the lives of 19 men during the construction.

The Golden Gate Bridge opened in 1937. It extends 1,280 meters across the water. The total length is 2,737 meters. It was the largest suspension bridge in the world until 1964. That is when the Verrazano Narrows Bridge opened in New York City. Today, the Golden Gate Bridge is one of the longest suspension bridge in the world.

28. What was the Golden Gate Bridge named after?

A. The local climate.B. The color of the paint.

C. The strait it crosses.D. Its natural surroundings.

29. How do people cross the Golden Gate Strait now?

A. By plane.B. By train.C. By ship.D. By car.

30. Why was a net used under the bridge?

A. To make construction easier.B. To protect the workers.

C. To stop building materials from falling.D. To prevent the environment being polluted.

31. What do we know about Joseph Strauss according to the text?

A. He attached importance to the workers' safety.

B. He built the first suspension bridge in the world.

C. He took safety measures of ideal value in bridge building.

D. He demanded strong measures to ensure the safety of the bridge.

Filmmaker Jennifer Nelson had to pay $1,500 to have “Happy Birthday to You”sung in the movie she's making. The money went to Warner Music Group, a company that claims to own the copyright on the song. A copyright is the legal right to use or sell a creative product such as a song, a TV show, a book, or a work of art. Warner has claimed the copyright for “Happy Birthday to You”since 1988.

“I never thought the song was owned by anyone,”Nelson said in an e-mail to The New York Times. “I thought it belonged to everyone.”

Nelson's movie is a documentary—a film that uses pictures or interviews with people to create a factual report of real-life events—and is actually about the history of the “Happy Birthday”song itself.

Two sisters named Mildred and Patty Hill wrote a song called “Good Morning to All”in 1893. Over a short period of time, people began to sing the words “happy birthday to you“in place of the original lyrics to the tune of the Hill sisters' song.

A number of history experts say that there is no record of who actually wrote the “Happy Birthday to You”lyrics. Historians also say there is no way to know when the general public began singing the “Happy Birthday”song, but they believe it was being sung by the public long before it was printed and owned by a company.

Nelson's lawyers say this piece of music's history proves that “Happy Birthday to You”belongs to everyone in the general public. That would mean Warner Music Group has no right to charge anyone a fee to sing the song in any setting.

Experts estimate(估計)that Warner/Chappell, the publishing division of the Warner Music Group, has made about $2 million a year from licensing fees for “Happy Birthday to You”.

Nelson's lawyers are asking a court in New York City to order Warner/Chappell to return fees they have collected over the past four years for the use of the “Happy Birthday”song.

32. Why did Jennifer Nelson have to pay Warner Music Group?

A. To have it write a song for her movie.B. To have it play a song in her movie.

C. To use a song in her movie.D. To own the copyright on a song.

33. What can we learn about the song according to the history exports?

A. It has always been very popular.B. It has a history of more than 200 years.

C. It doesnot belong to Warner Music Group.D. It was owned by another company at first.

34. According to Nelson's lawyers, to sing the “Happy Birthday”song, people ________.

A. shouldpay the Hill sistersB. needn't pay for any purpose

C. shouldpay Warner Music GroupD. needn't pay except for business use

35. How much should Warner give if the court supports the lawyers' claim?

A. $2 millionB. $4 millionC. $6 millionD. $8 million
