The Tangjiahe National Nature Reserve4 is located in Southwest China, Sichuan Province. The reserve takes its name from the small Tangjia River, which goes through the reserve and flows into the Yangtze, the longest river in China. It was wasteland years ago. The logging5 and poaching6 broke Tangjiahes ecosystem7. The animals just ran way.
The reserve was finished in 1978. In 1983, an observation8 station was built for giant pandas, making it the second largest one at that time. In 1985, hundreds of villagers from the heartland moved and made space for rare9 plants and animals, such as pandas. Then many animals under state protection10 returned to Tangjiahe.

In 2014, a wild otter11 showed up there, which is under second-class state protection. It was the first time that a wild otter was caught by camera in the country since 2000. Seven natural science museums were built there. About 5,000 students from middle and primary schools visited Tangjiahe last year.
