CHANG Qing
Jury member of WA Achievement Award and WA Design Experiment Award
Academician of Chinese Academy of Sciences;Professor, College of Architecture and Urban Planning,Tongji University
The question of what constitutes "experimentation"architectural design has never had a definitive answer. All good design must also include an element of creativity, and creativity necessitates something new and unprecedented, meaning that good design must, in some respect, contain"experimental" elements or functions. In this regard, WA Design Experiment Award presented a significant challenge for the jury when they assessed the characteristics and quality of the works submitted for consideration. As such, several judges paid special attention to the "experimental"nature of shortlisted works when conducting their deliberations for this award.
"Changzhou Cotton Lab Urban Lounge", the winner of the award, is located in a large factory warehouse. It uses wood and metal materials, respectively, to form two beautifully-constructed spaces of appropriate scale with reversible triangular roofs - these are called "House in House" spaces; the original warehouse space forms the "skin", which clearly expresses the creative use of new and old materials.
The three highly commended projects are each eye-catching in their own way. The concept behind"In Bamboo" allows people to observe the connection between avant-garde digital construction and local landscapes. "Lightweight Modular Housing Prototype" has made clear contributions to expansion and innovation in terms of sustainable research and the development of the housing industry. Exploration of communal space of "Macha Village Centre" in traditional villages contributes notable value for the concept of both space and society.
All these award-winning works demonstrate the characteristics and qualities of "design experimentation" to differing degrees, even if the concept of "experimentation" itself needs more precise definition.

Jury member of WA Achievement Award and WA Social Equality Award
Academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering;Honorary President, Chief Architect, China Architecture Design & Research Group
WA Social Equality Award is a special category of architectural award among the WAACA. It not only requires that a product demonstrate high design quality and creativity, but also that the designer demonstrates a sense of social responsibility and goodwill towards vulnerable groups. We hope that such works can help us understand the social attitudes and values of their creators. This year's entries were extremely competitive; they came primarily from rural areas, and used minimally invasive models, local construction strategies, and local resident participation processes, thereby achieving a good degree of consensus. To some extent, designers seemed to be at a loss regarding urban renewal in narrow alleyways and were only able to use temporary public furniture to express the connection shared by the community. In fact, the purpose of awarding prizes is to attract the attention of members of the architecture industry, and to promote the development of related design fields. As a result, the "common" quality of rural architectural works has improved. While the difficulty and problems facing urban renewal and urban resident living spaces are more challenging and still warrant the attention of members of the industry. We are looking forward to next year's entries for WA Social Equity Award.
HU Yue
Jury member of WA City Regeneration Award
Chief Architect, Beijing Institute of Architectural Design; Professor, School of Architecture, Central Academy of Fine Arts
This award is difficult to judge. The judging requirements for WA City Regeneration Award have already exceeded the valuation system of traditional architectural studies, forcing us to ask the question:how shall we judge? This depends on whether the jury is able to look beyond professional boundaries and re-examine contemporary Chinese architecture from a social perspective. Needless to say, many entrants did not carefully consider this complicated theme, although the challenge was more crucial for the jury. Obviously, what would be considered a good building by traditional architectural standards can no longer satisfy the requirements of an "urban contribution"? If a building has considerable value from a sociological perspective, how can we judge the role of the architect? Can we make accurate judgments based solely on photos and short descriptions? It is evident that, as a judge, it is impossible to properly judge these complex issues in such a short period. Therefore, I am restricted to making personal judgments on the design based on the type of project and traditional architectural aesthetic principles. I think that a building that serves the wider general public more broadly and follows aesthetic principles will attract greater admiration from the people.
HUANG Juzheng
Jury member of WA Housing Award
Executive Editor-in-Chief, Architectural Journal
The number of projects entered for the WA Housing Award in 2018 is similar to that of 2016. As in previous years, it is regrettable that there are not many excellent works that succeed in exploring the use of residence clusters that improve the quality of living spaces in high-density cities. As a result of the attention paid to issues of rural rejuvenation in recent years, the number of projects related to rural construction in which architects participate has risen significantly, especially those involving rural tourism housing. Architects have explored methods such as environmental adaptability, the use of local materials, and excavation and reuse, and have tried to find an effective means of translating local architecture into the language of modern architecture. In addition, in the new era of Chinese architecture, large-scale urban development models have gradually declined in popularity. In contrast, other projects have become increasingly important, such as those that apply urban micro-renewal, or in which architects develop existing buildings under the premise of preserving historical texture, thereby improving the quality of life for neighbourhood residents and the quality of urban public spaces. These are not only of important social and cultural value, but also deserve to be studied and explored by contemporary architects with regard to their architectural typology.
LI Xinggang
Jury member of WA Technological Innovation Award
Deputy Chief Architect, China Architectural Design and Research Institute
It is lamentable that the number of entrants for WA Technological Innovation Award is much lower than for other awards ahich reminds that architects should increase their level of attention and effort related to architectural technology.Besides, based on the submitted works, and especially those that are award-winning, we sense that the progress of modern Chinese architectural technology is currently shifting from "traditional"architectural composition, spatial construction, poetic architecture, and digital construction to standardized design, assembly construction, and green, energy saving integrations. In one regard, this reflects the major influence and impetus of national strategy and policy incentives. We hope that architects can adapt to trends without relaxing their requirements related to "timeless" architectural ontological progress. As demonstrated by the awardwinning works in WA Technological Innovation Award: a poetic approach to resisting gravity is perfectly integrated with usage requirements and is maximally open to the city as a new public space.
LIN Borong
Jury member of WA Technological Innovation Award
Professor, School of Architecture, Tsinghua UniversityThis is the first time that I have participated in judging WA Technological Innovation Award for 2018 WAACA. I have perceived China's recent innovative architectural works from the perspective of an architectural technology professional, and have noticed the following: Innovation-driven development has become a "Thirteenth Five-Year Plan National Strategy", concepts and technologies such as technological innovation (e.g. near-zero energy consumption, assembly methods, container construction, new materials and production methods, etc.), green development, the integration of nature, and pushing architectural limits have been well integrated into architectural works, and have been utilised in the civic service centres, electric vehicle charging stations, residences, culture and sports centres, rural construction, and architectural construction. In general, this round of entrants demonstrate very high levels of craftsmanship, especially regarding their fine nodes and delicate processing. Remarks on the Song Lyric and the Human Condition by Wang Guowei mention the "three realms" and express hope that architectural technology will similarly support architectural works, to eventually become a source of Chinese architectural creation in the new era and an expression of refined construction.

LIU Xiaodu
Jury member of WA Housing Award
Co-founder and Principal Architect, URBANUS
I am honoured to serve once again on the jury of 2018 WA Housing Award. I am pleased to note that this year's entrants have generally improved in both quantity and quality - I know that this statement may sound like a pleasantry, but it is true. It is also true that among all the award categories, the fewest entries were submitted for the housing category. This starkly contrasts to the massive number of residential construction projects in China. This reveals the fact that the vast majority of residential products lack the proper conditions for architectural creation, or that architects lack an awareness of or enthusiasm for the creation of residential buildings. Reflecting upon the large number of classic modernist works throughout history, residential buildings account for a fairly high proportion of these. The most influential aspect of people's life today is their living environment. Many good ideas were explored in this year's prize-winning works; from the concept of the poetic dwelling to elderly care, and from high-density urban communities to future living models. I hope that the WAACA will continue to present the Housing Award to continue encouraging the never-ending improvements in residential building design.
NI Yang
Jury member of WA Technological Innovation Award Vice President, Deputy Chief Architect, Architectural Design and Research Institute of South China University of Technology
This year was my first time participating in WAACA. Compared to my past experience, the appraisal felt completely different. WAACA has strong value orientation compared to the usual appraisal based on the "eight-character policy" for architecture: the City Regeneration Award, Social Equality Award, and Technological Innovation Award, etc. This value orientation also lays a new tone for appraisal. This is a substantial change, which feels like a breath of fresh air.
In this appraisal, I was assigned to WA Technological Innovation Awarel. In the beginning,I was also entangled in the understanding of technological innovation: Is it the value of progress of building technology itself, or the value of space experience brought about by appropriate technology? The final winner of the award - Hangzhou Inventronics Electric Vehicle Charging Station - gave a good answer. In a crowded city, the charging station was designed with a strategy of a complete spring layer. The roof is cantilevered for 20 metres and is as thin as a piece of paper, expressing the ultimate pursuit of architectural technology. Simultaneously, its huge cantilever also solves the demand for charging space for vehicles with two different sizes. This design of tackling complicated problems easily reflects the transparency and openness of the Internet era and is also an active response to urban space. In this case, the designer has dramatically improved the value of architectural technology and the value of the space experience brought by the technology.

The winning pieces from 2018 WAACA show impressively how well the more independent architects in China transfer their own attitudes and their own styles to their buildings. The quality of the work submitted in the different categories shows the architectural and city planning expertise, as well as the ability to use modern technical building equipment holistically in terms of sustainability and energy saving. The use of digital tools is also exemplary: They were not only used to plan and implement projects, but also as digital instruments to enhance the creative design options. This is visible in the architecture.
Two things impressed me in particular. Firstly, a distinctly pioneering and optimistic architectural style has emerged, but it is currently being implemented solely in a rural context. This will soon change. I am convinced that this style, with plain materials such as wood, concrete, glass and steel, and recognisable structures, will soon be visible on a large scale in exemplary pieces of architecture in the cities and metropolises. With great success and much international acclaim, such examples have already been displayed, at the Biennale Architettura in Venice in 2018.
Secondly, the excellent idea of the "Achievement Award" shows the sincerity and dedication with which buildings should be judged - not only on the day of opening, but across their entire lifetimes. All buildings should face this judgement, but quality over a longer time frame is something which is assessed far too rarely.
Both of these aspects are examples that reach far beyond the Chinese borders. They have the ability to be models for other dedicated and responsible architects and city planners all over the world.

Jury member of WA Architectural Achievement Award and WA Housing Award
Chief Planner, Beijing Municipal Plan and Land and Resources Management Committee; Director, Beijing Urban Planning and Design Research Institute
This is my first year participating in WAACA as a judge, and the review process was a learning experience for me. During the award process,I witnessed excellent architectural practices that aimed at adapting to transformation and development. These works embody respect for and the carrying forward of local culture, the pursuit of human values, and an exploration of technological innovation. My professional background allows me to evaluate architectural design from the perspective of urban and rural planning. Many award-winning works demonstrated unique features that allowed them to integrate with their surrounding environment, which not only improves the spatial quality, but also plays an important role in shaping the spirit of a space and extending urban memory. As urban development shifts from expansion through new construction to stock renewal, architects' focus has shifted from designing new buildings to renovating old buildings. The organic renewal of cities can achieve the continuous improvement of the built-up environment; this not only improves the image of a city; more importantly,it improves its function and environment to satisfy the needs of its residents. This creates a more meaningful quality of life and a more pleasant spatial experience.

Throughout the long history of architectural development, the technological progress demonstrated by building materials, construction, structure, and production technologies has been the continued driving force behind architectural evolution and functional improvement. WA Technological Innovation Award hosted by World Architecture magazine emphasises architectural works that use innovative technological and advanced methods to realise the architectural technological progress, while also achieving functional, spatial, and environmental harmony. This year's award-winning work demonstrates distinct diversity: the judges award the winner prize to the Hangzhou Inventronics Electric Vehicle Charging Station, which demonstrates the significance of the era of ecological civility. The building is light and fully functional and illustrates the demand and effort that the architects put towards demonstrating the scalar limits of lightweight cantilever structures; this work demonstrates the meaning and value of technological progress. The two highly commended projects were awarded to two works with architectural typology significance. The temporary office area for Enterprise at"Xiong'an Civic Service Centre" was prefabricated and assembled onsite from shipping containers; it reflects the "Long-Plan" of integrating green, lowcarbon, energy-saving techniques. Other shortlisted projects also demonstrated the impact of technological development on architectural design and final environmental development from different perspectives, including large sports centres, community buildings, and small mobile installations. In the future, we hope that this award will attract greater attention to the combination of technological advancement and large-scale complexfunction structure design, and fully demonstrate the social impact of technological progress on living environments, as well as the functional benefits derived from building design.

Professor, School of Architecture, Tsinghua UniversityThis year's WA Design Experiment Award is the most difficult award category to judge. There were more than 100 entries this year with a broad distribution. The types of projects submitted for consideration were also diverse and included a variety of sizes and scales, in addition to many renovations and expansions of existing buildings.Entrants included all varieties of urban and rural construction, which were generally of good quality and completeness; as such, many excellent works were not short-listed. The judges agreed that the quality of architectural works in China has improved continuously over recent years, and that participants recognise and support the WAACA constantly.

As the chairman of WA City Regeneration Award jury and a jury for the WA the Achievement Award, I was moved by this year's review process in 2018. The level of enthusiasm of the participating architects and the overall quality of the work are impressive.WA City Regeneration Award entries that I judged included large-scale urban renewal projects and smallscale touch-up projects, but all entries demonstrated a general concern of the Chinese architectural community towards urban issues, demonstrating that an increasing number of architects are paying more attention to the public and social responsibilities of cities when dealing with urban spatial relations. They more often view their work as an integral part of cities and try to make their projects work for them in terms of function, scale, and space, rather than pursuing an independent commemorative effect. For an extended period of time, this has been one of the most lacking values in China's building industry.Among the several award-winning works for 2018 WA Achievement Award, this sense of responsibility was stronger than the sense of commemoration, and the works demonstrated a greater sense of commonality than self-importance, even in structures serving a commemorative function. Perhaps this represents a trend of Chinese architectural design theories and a progressive significance!

In the face of the impulsive pace of modernity, conservation design in villages can be seen as actions of practice aimed at resisting modern destruction. Integrated conservation is the key to the protection and reuse of traditional villages, meaning that living conditions are conserved. The vitality of a village is related to the role of the local economic dynamism and the organisation of society; It is a manifestation of these factors materially supporting physical restoration and the symbolic expression of the cultural form of space. This is the process of giving villages new meaning through community participation in addition to being a way for professionals to demonstrate equality towards society through design, the provision of technical support, and supporting the vitalization of traditional villages.

Once again, I was lucky enough to participate in the appraisal of the WA Achievement Award. With so many outstanding architectural works, paying attention to their engraved historical memories, listening to the cultural stories they tell, and feeling the rich polymorphism of Chinese architectural creation was very exciting and inspiring.
WA Achievement Award recognises classic projects that have stood the test of time and showcase the long-lasting value of architecture. Each award-winning project is a reflection of the overall architectural creation that combines "high standard positioning, precise planning, forwardlooking architectural design, local architectural heritage, and architectural space allowing for growth". The appraisal criteria are highly consistent with the guidelines of "suitable, economic, green and beautiful" for architecture in this new era.
Implementing the construction policy for the new era is an important way to achieve highquality green development in the new era of the construction industry. Since its establishment in 2002, the WAACA have become one of the architectural awards that have attracted the most attention in the country and have a certain international influence. The awards have played an increasingly important role in promoting the implementation of construction policies for the new era. It is beneficial to promote the return of Chinese architectural creation to the essence of architecture,to meet the requirements of the times, and to implement new ideas to achieve new functions. Thanks to the WAACA for the active efforts to prosper Chinese architectural creation. I believe and expect that the WAACA will become increasingly better.

Thank World Architecture magazine and Prof. ZHANG Li for inviting me to the jury of 2018 WAACA. Despite the language barrier, a new network of Chinese professionals, researchers, academicians and students were wide-open to me.Interacting with the jury members was something special and enchanting.
There were more than a hundred projects in WA City Regeneration Award category. The projects were in diverse variety. The jury was impersonal to value the projects those had the impact on the quality of life of the people living in the dense urban fabric of present day Chinese cities. The pre-conceived connotation of "international style" in contemporary China were popular in submission. Those were authoritarian and expressed economic growth but were out of place, out of scale and out of life. These architectural solutions and techniques of yesterday, as well as current modes of living, working, eating and travelling, is not compatible with the task that befalls our generations.
Meanwhile, I am very much overwhelmed to find a significant number of projects were very much innovative in the approach to address the urban landscape, the site setting, the surrounding community and people's life. Those projects portrayed a broad range of new solutions, each adapted to local climate, culture and challenges. Those are not just ideas, but on the ground, implemented and in use. The awarded projects are effective solutions that improve all lives, not only the lives of the wealthy or fortunate, while conserving our resources and using them wisely in the Chinese urban landscape.
This is a paradigm shift and a renaissance of contemporary Chinese architecture. The current trend of the world is towards sustainable, inclusive and carbon neutral development. World Architecture in a rightfully and timely manner showcases these projects to the world by WAACA. I extend my continued support and good wishes for Architecture School of Tsinghua University to take it forward and thus contribute to make the world a better place for living.

I am again fortunate enough to participate in judging WA Social Equality Award and WA Achievement Award. The judging of these two awards is characterised by many deep emotions.About 60% of WA Social Equality Award entries were related to rural construction. This demonstrates that the recent national strategy of rural revitalisation has greatly promoted rural development and the interaction between urban and rural areas, to which architects and other professionals have responded positively. WA Achievement Award is probably the most important of WAACA and has the largest jury. However, there are fewer entrants for this award compared with other awards for a variety of reasons, and the contrast between the projects is more significant, making it more difficult to judge. We suggest the realisation of appropriate adjustments for future judging procedures and regulations. In addition, in the face of more than 40 valid entries, it is a challenge to review a small number of text and images in a short period of time, especially for works that have not been visited in person. My confidence in project evaluation was derived from experiencing projects in person.

This year is my third time judging the World Architecture Awards for Chinese Architecture(WAACA), and I strongly feel that the overall quality of the design works has gradually increased over that period of time. WAACA categories are clear and reasonable, highly specialized, and have fair, open, inclusive, and rigorous characteristics.Compared to other architecture awards in China, they are unique. The architects who participated in this year's awards were extremely enthusiastic, and WA Design Experiment Award that I judged this year had more than 100 entrants, many of which were extremely innovative works that were boldly experimental. I think that WA Design Experiment Award's establishment is extremely significant as it encourages architects to expand their thinking, update their ideas, and achieve true innovation. The judging efficiency was very high this year, and the jury was very serious about its responsibility. The jury held free discussions and evaluated more than three hundred projects in only one day. My sense is that the judging mechanisms of the WAACA are continuously maturing, and that the awards are increasingly famous and influential. In the future, they will become a benchmark for the development of contemporary Chinese architecture.

WA City Regeneration Award was the most competitive award of the WAACA, and the number of entries was the highest among all categories.Even so, the appraisal process was relatively smooth, and the four judges almost unanimously agreed on the finalists. One of the principal reasons is that a considerable proportion of the participating works failed to understand the connotation of the"City Regeneration" correctly. In the documents submitted for appraisal, there was hardly any indication of the aspects in which the work had positively influenced and contributed to the city.Even in the display board, there was no basic diagram indicating the relationship between the work and the city. Therefore, although many works were quite ingenious in their monomer design, they were unfortunately eliminated in the first round of appraisal. It is particularly worth mentioning that the quality of the final award-winning works of 2018 City Regeneration Award were significantly better than previous years' works. Although the top awardwinning works were splendid and diverse, which made choosing a winner difficult, the final award winners truly deserved the honour.

A residential building is a building that people use in their daily lives. "Anyone who needs to settle down should be given a domicile", and people's living behaviour, as Heidegger said, should be the pursuit of the "poetic dwelling"; here, "dwelling"is functional in meaning, while "poetic" refers to spiritual necessity. A poetic dwelling must not only satisfy people's living functions, but also serve as a destination where people can seek spiritual comfort and sustenance. In today's world, we consider spiritual needs and are willing to expand these needs to include aspects such as historical artefacts, social relationships, hospice, and other issues of modern life; these are the keys to this year's judging process.
