Chinese Shadow（影子）puppet（人偶）play（戏）is an old folk art（民间艺术）. Shadow puppets were made from the skin（皮）of animals. That’s why their Chinese name is pi ying.

It is said that more than（超过）2000 years ago, Emperor（帝王）Wu’s wife died from illness. The emperor was very sad. His minister（大臣）, Li Shaoweng, one day saw a child playing with a doll（娃娃）and he noticed the shadows on the floor were vivid（栩栩如生）. Then Li went back home and made a puppet of the emperor’s wife. He used cotton（棉花）and silk（丝绸）, and put sticks（木棍）on the puppet’s hands and feet to make it easy to move.

When night came, he put up a curtain（帘子）, lit a candle（蜡烛）, and invited the emperor to sit before the curtain. Li moved the puppet from behind the curtain. The emperor felt like he was seeing his wife again and was very happy. After that the shadow puppet play became the emperor’s favorite pastime（消遣）.

The shadow puppets all have a large head and a small body. A man has a big head and a square（方形）face and a tall strong body. A woman has a thin face, a small mouth and slim（苗条的）body.

A shadow puppet troupe（戏班）is made up of（组成）five people. One moves the puppets, one sings and the other three play musical instruments（乐器）.
