Smart ship has become a natural trend of shipbuilding and shipping sectors. Smart ship stands for ship which,by application of technical means such as sensor, communication, Internet of Things and Internet, automatically senses and acquires information and data of the ship itself, ocean environment, logistics and port, and realizes smart operation of ship navigation, management,maintenance and cargo transport based on computer technology, automatic control technology and big data processing and analysis technology. Its outward manifestation is whether it can meet the classification society’s rules and regulations for the smart ship and obtains the smart sign conferred by the classification society.

“Comprehensive capacity and intrinsic performance of smart ship have qualitative upgrade compared with traditional ship, as through smart technology, energy consumption can be reduced, safety status of the ship in operation improved, the ship’s stable and good state ensured more effectively;through marine equipment monitoring and big data analysis, data support can be provided for the shipowner to improve ship operation management efficiency,thus improving rationalization level of equipment maintenance and reducing ship off-board time. Technology favorable for the shipowner is surely development orientation for the future; since it is a future development orientation, we have the necessity to grasp it,” said Wang Yi, deputy general manager of CSSC Huangpu Wenchong Shipbuilding Company Limited.

At the end of 2015, Huangpu Wenchong along with Shanghai Merchant Ship Design and Research Institute,China Shipbuilding Industry System Engineering Research Institute and Hudong Heavy Machinery Co., Ltd,used 38800 dwt bulk carrier as real ship platform, carried out China’s first smart ship design and building.The ship’s goal is to realize wholeship information sharing, independent assessment and decision, ship-shore integration, remote support and service.Through smart technology, optimal layout is fundamentally made for the wholeship information perception, the wholeship information perception system is established, information integration and sharing is established for all systems and equipment of the whole ship;after data analysis and processing,through smart management and control system, the ship independent analysis,assessment, prediction and decision optimization capability is realized; by means of self-adaptive ship-shore data communication technology, through the ship-shore integrated platform, shipshore information interaction and ship system remote maintenance and upgrade is achieved; through the ship-shore integrated platform, on-shore resources are utilized to monitor, support, manage and control remote ships, improve ship operation safety and efficiency, able to provide the shipowner with entire lifecycle value creation service of single ship and even the whole fleet, also able to utilize on-board data to optimize and improve ship design and building.

Due to unavailability of clear definition, means of realization and technical index of smart ship in the world, Huangpu Wenchong’s building a smart ship was carried out along with the design institutes and world-renowned classification societies CCS and LR.During the design and building of the 38800 dwt bulk carrier, the classification societies, design institutes, shipbuilding company, and equipment manufacturers made concerted efforts in the smart ship rules and regulations and technical requirements, the shipbuilding company directly participated in Ramp;D front of marine products and had power of speech for ship rules and regulations and technical requirements.
