Five Stones Residences, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia
For the 400+ unit property, the client sought a landscape environment that recalled the traditional values of a community where people felt secure with unlocked doors, an open invitation to cross into a neighbour’s unattended kitchen to borrow a cup of sugar, where the feeling of community reigned. The old time game of fve stones where a ball is tossed into the air and small stones (or the knuckle bones of sheep) are caught was played across Asia under various names. Taught by elders to younger children the game can involve multiple generations to instil values of a shared community through a quite recreational activity.
Based on the project location along a river course, the game inspired the three series of artworks each containing fve pieces. Called "Found Stones" and "River Stones" these two artworks series anchor two corners of the large central garden and swimming pool space while the third series called "Knucklebones" appear to be strewn randomly across the refective pool and lobby pavement at the main drop off to the condominium.
Dr. Okashimo’s researched narrative for the Five Stone series propelled the marketing team’s efforts. They named the project after these distinctive art forms which now invite residents to sit, climb, and lean on or even to slide down their smooth, cool granite surfaces. Because the artworks were commissioned early in the design process, all necessary technical, structural and logistical coordination occurred so installation proceeded well since each crafted, polished granite artwork weighs approximately six tons. One series was displayed at the show flat where buyers eagerly snapped up the units, happy in the knowledge that such beautiful, contemporary useable artworks could be enjoyed daily and bring added value to their initial investment.
