Developing Context of "Imagery" Style Evaluation in Ancient China

AbstractAs a significant part of the ancient Chinese literature and artistic critique theory, style evaluation has been concerned by critics along the history. It often adopted the way of ‘taking analogy of things’ to evaluate in an imagery manner on the style of an author or his/her works, and it represented the unique vision and aesthetic interest of recognizing and understanding stylistic characters of the ancients, and it was an evaluation theory different from western art critiques and with its own national character. This thesis plans to investigate and analyze on related theory and documents, to explore the theoretic resource while making clear the developing context of imagery style evaluation, so as to strengthen knowledge and understanding of the characters and methods of style evaluation in the ancient in a further way, and to realize an overall scrutinizing of its general characters. This thesis directly relates to organization of the academic resources of ancient artistic critique theory, as well as the construction and completion of the basic theory of art study with the Chinese characters.

Social and Political Functions of Ancient Roman Portrait in Natural History

AbstractAs an important document in the early period of Western Art History, Natural History records the traditional thought and artistic context of the western classical world before the first century AD. It describes the interest and intellectual world of ancient Romans in the field of art collection and sponsorship. In Natural History, Portrait is an important part of the ancient culture of Rome art, of which the expression, artistic style and social functions are greatly influenced by ancient Rome. Based on the literature review of Natural History and the exploration of the historical situation of Rome portraits, this article analyzes Pliny's view on portraiture as well as the formation and development of Rome’s naturalistic portraits, thus trying to comprehend the social and political functions of portrait in the historical context.

AbstractWhile in the past space as an issue linking to language study in architectural field, morphology, semiotics or methodology models usually be deemed as the focus point that forms an inertial thinking to cover another language called "natural and daily life spatial language". With A game between daily life language and professional language that come from related technologies or theories, phenomenology, the diversity of individual expression, experience at any time and a state of nonverbal expression are showed as the characteristics of daily life language. The spatiallanguage of daily life both are the reviser for the opinion that semiotics have been failed in nowadays, and as a necessary exploration of spatial practices return to daily life.

AbstractThis thesis recalled the origination, content and influences of the first solo exhibition of Robert Rauschenberg’s in China, analyzed the differences between modernism and avant-garde art, and with comparison between the social and art contexts in China and America, it puts forward the idea that the “Pop Art Fever” happened in the Chinese art field in 1980s was a misunderstanding about the art by Rauschenberg, and then stresses the significance of making this misunderstanding clear.

The Study of the Late Ming Woodblock-Printed Book, Ruishi liangying

AbstractThis paper examines the background and the characteristics of Ruishi liangying. As a reaction to the political chaos and social disorder in the Late Ming, a leading eunuch, Jin Zhong, believed that he had the same responsibility as the literati to help the emperor to improve politics. Thus he compiled a Didactic Woodblock-Printed Book, RuiShi liangYing, hoping to educate people at that time. The book was finally published in 1368. Both of the drawing and carving quality in the woodblock illustrations of Ruishi liangying are very delicate and elegant. Through the study of this book, we can have a better understanding of the Ming Woodblock-Printed Book and the late Ming court culture from a more extensive perspective.

Analysis of "Birthday mode" from the Song Dynasty tomb's images in the Central Plains

Abstract" Birthday" is the center scene of the the tombs configuration decoration in the capital area of the middle and late Northern Song Dynasty. These image elements can be combined with birthday Poems, showing the Birthday Ceremony at the time. Its formation is closely related to the traditional "longevity hall", which is the construction of the tomb for persons alive. But the root cause is the awakening of individual consciousness in the Song Dynasty,including rational national consciousness, soulful family consciousness and emotional desire. Therefore, it is not only the result of the secular development of the ancient burial art in China, but also the specific performance of individual values and beliefs for scholar-bureaucrat in the Song Dynasty.

Harmony in Music, People and the Heaven and Earth --- New Theory on the Picture of Listening to Qin and Textual Re-investigation about its Author

AbstractQin is the primary musical instrument, and bears rich connotation in the human cultural history. It is still in debate if the Picture of Listening to Qin was painted by Emperor Huizong of Song. The cultural connotationof this picture and selection of theliterarytheories by Huizong such as Notes on Taoism by the Emperor, Explanation of Taoist Scripture by Chongxu mutually proved each other.They showed consistence in thought, embodied Huizong’s living philosophy of glorifying himself by the saint’s virtual, and a bright emperor; they also showed his artistic idea of taking art to link Taoist ideas, following the nature, not being burdened by things outside, and balancing all things with the heart of the nature between heaven and earth. The article puts forward the premise, with comparison of the Picture of Listening to Qinwith works by artists in previous dynasties, in Huizong’s time and other works by Huizong, theauthors havefoundconsistency and similarity among their topics, connotation, mould, view, brushwork, pattern, decoration, and so on, and combining with records and comments about Huizong in historical documents and his own creative spirit, that is to say, the pictures, poems and historical documents proved one another, so the authors come to the conclusion: thePicture of Listening to Qin was done by Huizong. The picture reflects the general rule of mutual influence, absorbing, inheritance and development of the ancient Chinese arts and the face of the traditional Chinese culture coming down in one continuous line in a concentrated manner.

Interpretation of five Qilu bronze mirrors of Han Dynasty

AbstractBronze mirrors’ decorations have been continued changing and evolving as time progressed. The mirrors of Panchi, four nipplelike protrusions and four vipers, four immortals and a gambling pattern, four nipple-like protrusions and four wild geese are the epitome in the developmental pedigree of bronze mirrors of Han Dynasty. The inscriptions also have different subject contents in the different period. Classifying the regional styles by means of bronze mirrors’ theme decorations, which can be the specialized field in progress design, and reflect the typical national art form.
