This special issue of the Journal of Sport and Health Science (JSHS) is focused on Concepts of dynamic systems and its applications in health and sports edited by Dr.Li Li.It includes a total of three review articles and five original articles contributed by research scientists in the USA,UK,and Italy.Below,we present the biographies of the guest editor and main authors for each of these articles.
Dr.Li Li received his PhD in Exercise Science from University of Massachusetts - Amherst. He started working at Louisiana State University (LSU) in 1998,teaching and researching on topics related to biomechanics. He initiated LSU Peripheral Neuropathy Studies in 2004,has been working on related projects until now.In addition to his appointment in the Department of Kinesiology while at LSU,Dr.Li is currently a research professor at Georgia Southern University.Dr.Li was the chair of Biomechanics Interested Group of American College of Sports Medicine (2008-2009),president of International Chinese Society of Physical Activities and Health (2010-2011).In addition to serving as reviewer for more than a dozen peer reviewed scientific journals,he is one of the founding editorial board members of the Journal of Sport and Health Science, long time editorial board member for one of the best movement science journal—Journal of Kinesiology and Electromyography (2001-present),and Biomechanics Section editor of the oldest kinesiological journal in the world—Research Quarterly for Exercise and Sports (2010-2014).Dr.Li has been invited and delivered numerous Keynote speeches at different international conferences.Dr.Li is an active fellow of (American) National Academy of Kinesiology since 2014.
Dr.Richard E.A.van Emmerik is a professor in the Department of Kinesiology at the University of Massachusetts Amherst. He received his undergraduate degree in movement science from the Vrije Universiteit in Amsterdam, the Netherlands, and his PhD degree in Kinesiology from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.In his research,he applies principles from complex and nonlinear dynamical systems to the study of posture and locomotion, with a focus on coordinative processes underlying expert performance as well as movement disorders. He is a member of the Royal Dutch Academy of Arts and Sciences, the American National Academy of Kinesiology (NAK),and serves on the editorial boards for Human Movement Science,Motor Control, and Kinesiology Review.
Dr.Jeffrey M.Haddad received his PhD from the University of Massachusetts in 2006.He is currently an associate professor in the Department of Health and Kinesiology at Purdue University. His main area of research investigates changes in balance, mobility, and manual control in older adults and adults with neurological disorders such as Parkinson's disease.
Dr.Tehran J.Davis is an assistant professor of Psychological Sciences at the University of Connecticut and faculty member at the Center for the Ecological Study of Perception and Action (CESPA).He received his PhD from the University of Cincinnati in 2012.His main research interests lie in ecological and dynamical systems approaches to the selection, control, and coordination of action, including applications to joint action and interpersonal coordination within multi-agent systems.
Dr.Ezio Preatoni joined the University of Bath in August 2010,where he is currently a lecturer (assistant professor) in biomechanics and motor control.Ezio obtained the Laurea degree (BSc+MSc) in biomedical engineering (2003) and the PhD degree in bioengineering (2007) from Politecnico di Milano.Ezio’s research is on human movement dynamics and aims at understanding the determinants of change in movement execution and coordination, and the role of movement variability in the acquisition, retention, and recovery of motor skills.Ezio’s research interests are in the biomechanics and motor control areas, and have recently focussed on the use and integration of advanced technologies and methodologies for the assessment of performance, injury mechanisms and prevention.Ezio was awarded the “Hans Gros New Investigator Award” by the International Society of Biomechanics in Sports (ISBS) in 2008,and has been a member of the board of directors of ISBS since 2014.
Dr.Michael A.Busa received his BS from the University of Portland in 2003,MS from Eastern Michigan University in 2008,and PhD from the University of Massachusetts Amherst in 2015.He is currently a postdoctorial research fellow at the University of Massachusetts Amherst under the supervision of Drs.Joseph Hamill and Richard van Emmerik. His research interests include the control and coordination of human movement, the development of devices that improve movement by addressing underlying causes of movement impairments, and the development of integrative models that relate human performance to underlying aspects of behavior.
Dr.Joseph F.Seay obtained his PhD in kinesiology from University of Massachusetts (Amherst) in 2008.Since that time,he has been a research biomechanist in the Military Performance Division at the United States Army Research Institute of Environmental Medicine (USARIEM).Within the USARIEM biomechanics research program Dr.Seay and his team conduct both laboratory and field studies which explore how movement mechanics in soldiers are affected by load carriage, low back pain, and running overuse injuries.Dr.Seay has published 10+ peer-reviewed articles and has also recently submitted a book chapter for publication which provides an overview on the biomechanics of load carriage for a publication titled “Mechanobiology and Mechanophysiology of Military-Related Injuries”.He is currently a co-chair of the Biomechanics Interest Group within the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM).
Dr.Thomas A.Buckley earned his BS from Springfield College in 1995,MS from Indiana State University in 1997,and EdD in Applied Physiology from Columbia University in 2007.Dr.Buckley is an assistant professor in the Department of Kinesiology and Applied Physiology at the University of Delaware after previously holding faculty positions at Georgia Southern University and Dominican College of Blauvelt.Dr.Buckley’s research interest is centered on sports-related concussions with a specific interest in postural control as a biomarker of both injury and recovery. He is currently the co-director of the University of Delaware’s enrollment in the NCAA/DoD Grand Alliance CARE project which seeks to understand the natural history of concussion.Dr.Buckley has served as a grant reviewer for the Department of Defense,Army Research Office, and the National Athletic Trainers’ Association. He serves on the editorial board for Athletic Training and Sports Health Care.
Dr.Douglas W.Powell is the director of Research and the director of the Advanced Interdisciplinary Movement Science Laboratory at Campbell University in Buies Creek.Dr.Powell holds faculty appointments in the Department of Physical Therapy and the Department of Physiology in the Jerry M.Wallace School of Osteopathic Medicine. He received his BS and MA in exercise physiology and biomechanics, respectively, from East Carolina University and his PhD in biomechanics and sports medicine from the University of Tennessee.Dr.Powell’s research focuses on sensorimotor integration, mechanisms of fatigue and sport performance, and sport-related performance and injury.
