CCS: the Forerunner of Green Shipping

Under the influence of the major “green” trend in the world,the shipping ecology will certainly face great changes. For the shipping industry,“green”is no longer a topic of natural ecology,but a subject of industrial ecology,which becomes the significant driving force for us to formulate strategy,solve problems and to actively go for the better. Mr. Li Kejun,the president of CCS said,as the Member of IACS and a national classifi cation society,CCS has been devoting itself to promoting the application of energy saving technologies,promoting green shipbuilding and shipping. It can be said that CCS is the forerunner of green service.

If it can be said that the ensurance of life and property safety and prevention of marine pollution was our primary task in the past,then in the future it should include energy conservation,emission reduction and green shipping. “green shipping” is a comprehensive concept,which involves new energy,new material and cycling economy. The design,construction,operation,recycling of ships should take higher safety,higher efficiency,higher energy-efficiency and higher level of environment protection as the main objectives.

Against this background,CCS has completed the transformation to green development in advance,and has started the research and formulation of green rules.In light of the development trend of shipbuilding and shipping,in January 2008,CCS launched of ficially “green ship program”,by which,activities like certification of ship energy efficiency management,research and development of green technology for ocean-going ships,research and development of green technology for inland waterway ships and offshore installations,research and development of green technology for industry and certification and the common green technology are initiated. New generation of technical supporting system in compliance with safety and eco-friendliness requirements are formed to support and serve the sustainable development of shipbuilding,shipping and equipment industry.

The higher requirements for shipbuilding industry posed by EEDI involve optimization of ship type,optimization of propeller,optimization of propulsion system,optimization of matching equipment,alternative resources,and the reservation and application of new energy technology. At present,the major shipbuilding countries have sped up the upgrade of ship type as well as development of new technology. The competition in new ship type and new technology has also started. In “the Guidance for Technical Research Project on Energy Efficiency and Emission Reduction for Ships” (the first batch) issued by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology,most projects are carried out by CCS’ scientific and research team. Some scientific and research achievements have been applied to material ships. One example is that the project of research of WSHP application onboard ships and development of products has been listed in the forth batch of energy saving and emission reduction technology to be promoted by the Ministry of Transportation. In cooperation with Chongqing Transportation & Travel Investment (Group) Co. Ltd,this technology will be applied to luxury cruise ships and will cut 30-40% energy for heating and cooling systems.
