在英语中一词多义的现象十分普遍，读者常常需要根据上下文来判断一个单词在文中的具体词义。在课文“Where Principles Come First”中，principle 一词虽重复出现，却表达了不同的词义。该词对课文的理解起着至关重要的作用，而该教材教师用书对该词的理解却颇为不当。

在学习和使用英语的过程中，一词多义的现象是十分普遍的。通常一词可以属于几种词类，具有多种词义。所以，在阅读的过程中，根据上下文判断某词在某篇文章中确切的词义对文章的理解起着举止轻重的作用。有时候对词义错误的判断会导致对整篇文章的误解。

“Where Principles Come First”是由外语教学与研究出版社所出版的《新视野大学英语》第三册第三单元中A部分的课文。在这篇课文中，principle共出现了三次：Where principles come first；The Hyde school operates on the principle that if you teach students the merit of such values as truth, courage, integrity, leadership, curiosity and concern, then academic achievement naturally follows.“We see ourselves as preparing kids for a way of life—— by cultivating a comprehensive set of principles that can affect all kids.”[1]58-59

据《朗文当代英语辞典》 principle一词主要有三层意思：MORAL RULE;RULES OF A PROCESS;BELIEF[2] 1120。

细读下来, 我们发现文章中的三个principle表达的并不是同一个意思。对于标题中的principle, 可以这样理解：根据语法习惯，课文标题应为某个句子中用来修饰某个名词的定语从句。比如，Soldier! You are in the army where principles come first. 翻译为：战士，你在 [原则(纪律)当先的]军营里[3]！由于这篇课文介绍的是海德学校，我们认为where principles come first 修饰的是the Hyde school. 那么在海德学校究竟是原则当先还是道德当先呢？文章的第一句话就回答了这个问题。这句话虽然没有直接告诉读者principle在标题中的词义，但从 “if you teach students the merit of such values as truth, courage, integrity, leadership, curiosity and concern, then academic achievement naturally follows”(下文简称A句)这一部分，尤其是 “then academic achievement naturally follows” 我们发现values就是标题中principles要表达的意思。Principles指代的就是truth, courage, integrity, leadership, curiosity and concern。所以在标题中principle意为moral rule。换句话说，A句对 “Principles Come First”起到了解释说明的作用。所以文章的标题可翻译为“品德至上”[1]78。由此，我们也可以得出第三个principle的词义同样是moral rule. 那么by cultivating a comprehensive set of principles that can affect all kids这部分可译为“办法是倡导一整套能影响所有孩子的价值观念”[1]78。 而The Hyde school operates on the principle that…中的principle就更好理解了。据《朗文当代英语辞典》，operate一词有多种解释，但对于学校这一组织机构，operate一词的词义理解为 4 BUSINESS/ORGANIZATION to work in a particular place or way[2]994，显然接下来的principle意为belief，该部分可译为“海德中学的办学宗旨是……。”[1]78为了让学生更直观地理解这三个principle的不同词义，我们不妨可将这句话改为：The Hyde school operates on the principle that principles come first. 这样更利于学生理解和区分principle在这里所表达的两种词义。

至此，我们对文章中的三个principle所表达的不同意思有了清楚的了解。通过文章，我们了解到海德学校是一所与众不同的学校，它的不同在于学校致力倡导“品德至上”的教育理念。不同的人对这一理念持不同的观点。当海德学校将这个尚有争议理念在全国范围的一些学校推广时，有袖手旁观的，有反对的，也有支持的。为什么会有这种情况呢？因为提倡这一理念的海德学校，其教学模式与众不同。海德学校的校长将其教育方式和传统的教育方式比作汽车和马车，而马车无论怎么改，也不可能变成汽车。在海德学校，除了开设与传统学校一样为升入大学做准备的课程外，学生要学要做的还很多，其中，是否努力也是评判学生最终成绩的重要因素。同时，家长参与在海德更是不可或缺。此外，这种模式对教师的要求也更高。所以，无论是老师还是学生，在海德学校的收获都十分显著。但是在《新视野大学英语读写教程3 教师用书》中，对于该篇文章的结构分析却和文章所表达的内容相去甚远。该结构分析以principles一词为主线，将文章主要划分为4个部分，每个部分回答了一个问题：Question1: What are the principles? Question2: Are the Hyde principles accepted by other public schools? Question3: What are the detailed principles or approaches advocated by the Hyde school? Question4: what are the beneficial results of the Hyde School’s principles?[1]62-63现举第一个问题为例进行说明，首先作者对文章分析：When we first approach the article, we read the title——Where Principles Come First. This naturally brings us the question: What are the principles[1]61? 然后作者对该问题进行了回答：

What are the principles? (以下简称B句)

The principles of the Hyde school:

Teach students the merit of such values as truth, courage, integrity…and academic achievement naturally follows(以下简称C句).

Prepare kids for a way of life by cultivating a comprehensive set of principles that can affect all kids.[1]62

很明显，此结构分析在一开始就将principle在文章中的两个不同词义混为一谈。根据此结构分析所述，B句中的principles来自于标题，所以应理解为moral rule. 那么由此得出的答案应如我们上文所解释的，principles指代的是truth, courage, integrity, leadership, curiosity and concern。而C句并不是对B句的回答，它是意为belief 的principle的内容，即海德学校的办学宗旨。

怎么解决这个问题呢，我们可以将四个问题中principles均改为principle。Question1: What is the principle of the Hyde school? Question2: Is the Hyde principle accepted by other public schools? Question3: What is the detailed principle or approach advocated by the Hyde school? Question4: what are the beneficial results of the Hyde School’s principle? 这样一来，连接四个问题的主线便成了principle——办学宗旨一词，而海德学校的办学宗旨就是品德至上：The principle of the Hyde school is that principles come first.

综上所述，认真分析principle一词对该课文的理解起着举足轻重的作用。如果分不清principle所表达的不同词义，很容易造成理解上的差错。我们认为，在教授学生理解这篇课文时，可以在一开始就让学生找出文章中的principle，并让学生思考这三个principle是否表达同一个意思。当然，在实际教学中，学生不一定会给出正确答案，但是我们可以借此机会引起学生的注意，并引导学生正确理解三个principle的词义，从而起到事半功倍的效果。

In English it is ubiquitous for a word to have multiple senses. Readers always need to work out its exact sense in the context. In the passage “Where Principles Come First”, the word “principle” appears several times and bears different senses. It plays an extremely important role in the understanding of the passage, while the teacher’s book presents a wrong understanding of it.
