Preliminary Discussion on Design Concepts of Theme Restaurant and Urban Cultural Integration

Abstract:The catering consumption markedly increases along with the rapid economic development and the prompt improvement of peoples life quality. However, for the restaurant decoration, except some possessing the high design quality, a great number of restaurants only pile up the top-grade materials, which can not meet peoples growing demands of the consumption taste. The restaurant decoration should focus on the rising demands on the spiritual functions, integrate the elite of Chinese dietetic culture in the design, study the change of the dietetic concepts nowadays and design the individualized restaurant decoration adapting to the modern peoples requirements and holding the certain cultural taste.

I. Theme Restaurant

The catering environment, which meets peoples basic demands of diet and reflects the theme culture, is named as the theme restaurant. The theme restaurant refers to the catering place characterized by the attractive symbols with one or several themes, hoping to lead the persons in such environment to the expected theme context through the observation and association. In the development of the theme culture, it will be essential to intensify the theme in virtue of the characteristic architectural design and interior decoration.

II. Comprehensive Analysis of Taipei Yes Restaurant in Qingdao

Taipei Yes Restaurant is located at Qingdao Sunshine Department Store, as the first Taiwan restaurant here. The restaurant mainly deals in the dishes and snacks in different regions of Taiwan, with relatively strong integration. Depending on the front-line fashion of atmosphere and consistently original taste, the restaurant strives for providing the native Taiwan taste for people in Qingdao. No matter for the dining together or the afternoon tea, you will enjoy the comfortable and easygoing time.

The restaurant is situated at the center of CBD, Sunshine Department Store at East Hong Kong Road, in the eastern Qingdao. Sunshine Department Store, where the restaurant is located at, belongs to the shopping mall of high consumption in Qingdao, which involves the world well-known catering stores as Starbucks and Häagen-Dazs. The restaurant is surrounded by numerous office buildings, to the south of namable tourism scene May Fourth Square in Qingdao.

III. Restaurant Design

Kao Gong Ji said the building should be “suitable for its nature, in accord with its environment, selecting ideal materials and using skillful artistry”. These four fundamental factors for the building not only play a significant role in the ancient architecture design, but also become four basic standards for the estheticians to measure the design works in modern design. This paper will then explain the design beauty of restaurant step by step in the following.

1. Design Style “Suitable for Nature”

Due to the concise and lively modern Mediterranean style, the restaurant meets the customers demands of returning to nature and higher life quality. The noble garden breath and cultural taste are its connotation, which displays the warm atmosphere with the certain artistic appreciation.

Similar with the other styles, the Mediterranean one possesses its unique esthetic features. For the color selection of this restaurant, the designer chooses red and blue in “red tile, green tree, blue sky and azure sky” as the dominant colors. For the lighting treatment, he adopts the warm yellow to represent the golden sand beach in Qingdao and apply the overall tone through the interior decorations. The application of the overall colors, namely adding the new colors suitable for Qingdao in the traditional Mediterranean style, forms the unique color culture in this restaurant.

After constructing the basic space form, the decoration of Mediterranean style shows the distinct features. The interior decoration focuses on low-colorful cotton articles for the curtain, tablecloth, slipcover and lampshade.

2. Restaurant Function “in Accordance with Environment”

The main function for the restaurant is to provide the perfect dainty food for each customer and therefore, more attentions should be paid to the functional design of ingredient and dining.

Firstly, two entrances for the restaurant. The designer makes the symbolic decoration of door head at the entrance and the design adopts the bright color to present the overall middle and high-grade localization of the restaurant.

Secondly, there are varied divisions of dining environment. Combining the demands of modern young people and special groups, the restaurant is mainly divided into division of ice dainty, division of no smoking and general division. The division of ice dainty is the special design for the customers to enjoy the ice dainty and drinking, with the warm interior decorations, which will comfort the customers. The division of no smoking refers to the recent design trend in the modern catering, giving priority to the women and children, which adds many funny decorations in the design, such as imitative bamboo groups and bright mirror surface, which display the proper integration of the function and design. The general division is taken account of the dining population by the designer, both possessing the independent dining environment and reconstructed mini environment for dining together, which will be the best layout for the space of restaurant.

3. “Selecting Ideal Materials and Using Skillful Artistry”

For the material selection, the restaurant mainly adopts the glass, metal, soft package and wooden articles, matching with the light and glaring colors, which perfectly presents the combination of modern design and Mediterranean style. As the partition, the warm light source always brings along the warm and easygoing feelings. The design keeps to the principle of human-oriented, in accordance with people's psychological demands on the dining environment.

For the decorations, it is matched with the Mediterranean interior ornamental sights, such as the stone-made interior decorative articles in the pathway and entrance, which ideally exhibits the unique style and fashion of the restaurant. The white tree branch and long-shaped partition design all additionally show the localization of the whole restaurant.

IV. Discussion on Design Style

In the design of restaurant, when displaying the artistic characteristics and creation individuality, it also combines the external and internal factors of the style together and therefore endues the ornaments with the visual pleasure and cultural connotation, being merged into the specific design of the restaurant.

For the restaurant design, it blends in the concepts of urban culture, namely adding the local architectural style and color technique of Qingdao in the design of the whole restaurant, skillfully integrating with the colors in Mediterranean style, which presents the visual pleasure and cultural connotation. It not only exhibits the whole style of the restaurant, but also shows the continuation of urban culture of Qingdao in the new age.

V. Conclusion

The generation, progress and transformation of different artistic styles and schools for the interior design refer to the continuation and development of the history of architectural art with the profound connotation of social development history and culture; on the other hand, it will be inevitable to greatly enrich the mental life of the activity space in which people get along with day and night.

Presently, there is no lack of distinctive cases for the environment and atmosphere in the field of catering decorations; however, a great number of them possess the similar mode, incompetent to refer to the cultural connotation. In the industry of interior design in developed countries, the catering interior design takes up the significant position. There are characteristic restaurants as classical and newfangled types abroad, which are derived from their local culture. Consequently, the design of environment and atmosphere will be extremely important. Only when this part is characterized by the individuality can the design be full of vitality, which will be the inexorable trend.
