You may have heard the term “the American Dream”. In 1848, James W. Marshall found gold in California and people began having golden dreams. That 19th century “American Dream” caused the Gold Rush and gave California its nickname(绰号) of the “Golden State”.

The American Dream drove not only 1800s gold-rush prospectors(淘金者) but also waves of immigrants(移民) throughout that century and the next. People from Europe, and a large number of Chinese, arrived in the US in the 19th century hoping that in America they would find gold in the streets. But most, instead, worked as railroad labourers. They created the oldest Chinatown, in San Francisco, and gave the city a Chinese name “the old gold hill”.

In the 20th century, some critics(评论家) said that it was no longer possible to become rich through determination and hard work. Unfair education for students from poor families and racial discrimination(歧视) almost made the American Dream a nightmare(噩梦).

Then, in the 1990s, California saw a new wave of dreamers in Silicon Valley. People poured their energy into the Internet. This new chapter of the American Dream attracted many business people and young talents from China and India to form start-ups and seek fortunes in America.

Better pay, a nice house, and a rising standard of living will always be attractive. However, the new American Dream is no longer just about money. It encourages Americans to use money with a plan, protect the environment, raise the quality of life, and promote social justice.

The Governor of California, Arnold Schwarzenegger, has become the model of new American Dream. After years of hard work, he grew from a poor young man from Austria into a movie superstar and then governor. Many people hope his story can save the American Dream and give California a brighter future.

All Roads Lead to Rome

Elegant performances by Gregory Peck and Audrey Hepburn in the 1953 Hollywood classic “Roman Holiday”, made the ancient city a romantic destination.

Before the film the city seldom was associated with romance. Rome, the centre of Western civilization(文明) for centuries, had been a city of heroes rather than lovers.

Built in 753 BC, the citys roots go back to the legend(传奇) of twin brothers Romulus and Remus, who were raised by a she-wolf instead of a human mother. The two boys built the city, but ended up at war with each other. Romulus won the battle and the city became known as Rome.

Many famous people, like Julius Caesar, have left their marks on the city. The saying “Rome wasnt built in a day” is proved quickly when you start exploring the city. Like a museum of architecture and history, Rome presents a mix of temples, churches, and statues from different periods.

You can imagine yourself a gladiator(角斗士) in the Colosseum, showered with applause and flowers like a thunderstorm from the audience. You can view masterpieces(杰作) by Da Vinci and Michelangelo with your own eyes in the Vatican, the worlds smallest country.

In addition to its cultural riches, Rome is famous for hospitality(好客). Dont worry if you dont speak Italian. A simple “Ciao”, (pronounced “chow”; English meaning=both hello and goodbye) can bring you warm smiles.

“When in Rome, do as the Romans do” is another saying. So dont forget to make a wish while throwing a coin into the Trevi Fountain. It is said the wish will bring you back to Rome one day. The fountain is said to be the most visited one in the world, because “All Roads Lead to Rome.” Believe it or not, the fountain collects US$1000-worth of coins every day.

Haunting Sound of the Bagpipes

The sound of the bagpipes(风笛) is as familiar to the Scottish as wearing a kilt(苏格兰方格呢短裙) and climbing mountains. But the sad sound of the Scottish bagpipes will send a shiver(震颤) down your body, whether you love the sound, or hate it.

Most modern Scottish bagpipes are made up of three wooden pipes, which come out of the top of a bag made of sheep or deer skin. When the piper blows into the pipes, a long sound is heard, rather like that of a Chinese erhu. Tunes are created when the piper puts his fingers over the nine holes on the pipes.

If the piper wants to take a breath, he can press on the bag with his arm, and the bagpipe music does not stop.

Bagpipes have been played for thousands of years. They dont originally come from Scotland, although many people think they do. A piper is always needed at Burns-suppers. Burns-night started 200 years ago as a tribute(颂辞) to the famous Scottish poet, Robert Burns. A Burns-Supper starts when a haggis (羊杂碎布丁) is brought in to dinner to the sound of the bagpipes(洋葱). A haggis consists of sheep meat, oatmeal(燕麦), onions and spices(调味品), and is cooked by boiling it inside a bag.

The British royal family employ a bagpiper to play for them. When the Queen stays at her Scottish castle, Balmoral, the royal piper plays every morning after breakfast, as well as at special dinners and balls.

So whether the sharp sound of the bagpipes thrills you or not, there is no sign that the popularity of this strange and ancient instrument is fading.

After the unforgettably initial shock, he remembered the promise he had made to his son: “No matter what, Ill always be there for you!”Andtears began to fill his eyes. As he looked at the pile of ruins that once was the school, it looked hopeless, but he kept remembering his commitment to his son.

He began to direct his attention towards where he walked his son to class at school each morning. Remembering his sons classroom would be in the back right corner of the building, he rushed there and started digging through the ruins.

As he was digging, other helpless parents arrived, clutching their hearts, saying: “My son!”“My daughter!”Other well meaning parents tried to pull him off what was left of the school, saying: “Its too late! Theyre all dead! You cant help!”

“Go home!Come on, face reality, theres nothing you can do!”

To each parent he responded with one line: “Are you going to help me now?” And then he continued to dig for his son, stone by stone. The fire chief showed up and tried to pull him off the schools ruins saying,“Fires are breaking out, explosions are happening everywhere. Youre in danger. Well take care of it. Go home.” To which this loving, caring American father asked, “Are you going to help me now?”

The police came and said, “Youre angry, anxious and its over. Youre endangering others. Go home. Well handle it!”To which he replied, “Are you going to help me now?” No one helped.

Courageously he went on alone because he needed to know for himself: “Is my boy alive or is he dead?” He dug for eight hours…12 hours…24 hours…36 hours…then, in the 38th hour, he pulled back a large stone and heard his sons voice. He screamed his sons name, “ARMAND!” He heard back, “Dad!?! Its me, Dad! I told the other kids not to worry. I told them that if you were alive, youd save me and when you saved me, theyd be saved. You promised, ‘No matter what happens, Ill always be there for you! You did it, Dad!” “Whats going on there? How is it?” the father asked.

“There are 14 of us left out of 33, Dad. Were scared, hungry, thirsty and thankful youre here. When the building collapsed, it made a triangle, and it saved us.”

“Come out, boy!”
