Every year thousands of young people in England finish school and then take a year off before they start work or go to university. Some young people go to other countries and work as volunteers(志愿者). Volunteers give their time to help people. For example, they work in schools or hospitals, or they do something helpful for the environment.

Pauline Jones, 18, lives in Cardiff, Wales. Next year she wants to go to university to study Chinese, but now shes living in Belize. Pauline says, “Im working with other people here to save the coral reefs (珊瑚礁) in the sea near Belize. The reefs here are beautiful, but if the sea water is very polluted(污染), the coral dies. Im helping to do research on the coral and the fish that live around the reefs. All over the world, coral reefs are dying. We need to do something about the problem before its too late.”

“Im staying with a family here and I help do some housework. I dont get any money, but thats OK. When I was growing up, I had an old neighbor, Dr. Gibbs. He didnt look like any doctor Id ever known. He never invited us to play in his yard, but he was a very kind person.

When Dr. Gibbs wasnt saving lives, he was planting trees. He owned a large field and wanted to make it a forest.

The good doctor had some interesting ideas about planting trees. He never watered his new trees. Once I asked why. He said that watering plants spoiled them, and that if you watered them, each baby tree would grow weaker and weaker, so you had to make things difficult for them and pick out the weaker trees early on.

He talked about how watering trees made for shallow (浅的) roots, and how trees that werent watered had to grow deep roots in search of water under the earth by themselves. Deep roots were very important.

So he never watered his trees. Hed planted an oak and, instead of watering it every morning, hed beat it with a rolled-up newspaper. I asked him why he did that, and he said it was to get the trees attention.

Dr. Gibbs died several years after I left home. Every now and then, I walked by his house and looked at the trees that I watched him plant about twenty-five years ago. Theyre very big and strong now.

I planted some trees a few years back and carried water to them for a whole summer. After two years of caring too much, whenever a cold wind blows in, they shake a lot.

Every night before I go to bed, I check on my two sons. Mostly I pray (祈祷) that their lives will be easy. But lately Ive been thinking that its time to change my prayer. I know my children are going to face difficulties. Theres always a cold wind blowing somewhere, so what we need to do is to pray for roots that reach deep into the brave heart, so when the rains fall and the winds blow, we could face it strongly and wont be beaten down.

Two people sit down to play Go(围棋). One of the players is an old man. He is now 89 years old. He has spent all of his life playing this game. The other person is a young woman. She has been playing Go for only three years. Before this, the woman was an expert at playing computer games. Now she plays Go the same way she played computer games—by becoming a machine herself.

They will play many games, until they know who the winner is. The woman shows no feelings but thinking about all the possible ways of placing her next stone. The old man, on the other hand, looks at the movements of her hands and of her face. This has always helped him to win.

He wins the first three games. She wins the next game, and the man is surprised. He has never lost to a woman. The old man worries about the way the young woman is playing the game. He cant read her face; he does not understand her way of playing.

“The way I think about the game,” says the woman, “is that it is steps for getting what I want.” Again, the old man is surprised. For him, the game is a way of life itself, and not a model of life.

“There is no more beauty any longer. Everything is science and rules. Everything is about winning. Nothing is about playing,” he says.

They cannot agree with each other; but it is not necessary.

“Change is a necessary part of life,” thinks the man.

“Playing is as important as winning,” thinks the woman.

They start to play their final game.
