Song-and-Dance Duet is a popular art form in Northeast China.It used to be called Xiao Yangko( 小秧歌) or Bengbeng( 蹦蹦).
With a history of 300 years, Song-and-Dance Duet was mainly derived fromthe Northeast Yangko and Lianhualuo( 蓮花落) in Hebei Province. Suona( 唢呐)and Banhu( 板胡) are the main instruments of Song-and-Dance Duet.
Song-and-Dance Duet is divided into three kinds—the veritable Song-and-Dance Duet, Danchutou( 单出头) and Lachangxi( 拉场戏). Two people singingand dancing together make the veritable Song-and-Dance Duet. Danchutou meansan actor singing and dancing. Lachangxi is the form of several actors performingon a stage in various roles. Actors are good at singing, telling jokes, acting, dancingand stunts( ). They are particularly good at dancing with handkerchiefsand fans. Zhao Benshan, used to be a Song-and-Dance Duet actor. After ZhaoBenshans success, he tried to promote Song-and-Dance Duet throughout thecountry. When we watch the performance, we can feel the local customs containedin it. By using local dialects( 方言) and funny dialogues, they bring the audienceinto a happy world and make people more interested in their own culturaltraditions.
Song-and-Dance Duet has been constantly absorbing the essence of variousarts. It is not only an art form, but also a way of cultural inheritance.
