Suzhou is called the“Venice of China”. Thecity is famous for its many ancient canals, lined withold houses and pretty curved stone bridges. The bestway to explore all this is with a boat tour.
For about 1.5 hours, we cruised through thecanals on a small sightseeing boat. We sailed slowlyunder elegantly carved stone bridges and past small old houses that nestled along thecanals. Then we stopped at a fairly touristy part and explored the bridges and alleys alongthe canal on foot, lined with restaurants and craft and souvenir stores. I hung around andonce again particularly enjoyed watching the hustle and bustle (喧嚣气氛) and the people.Wedding couples in traditional Chinese dress were probably particularly happy to bephotographed here and pose in front of the historic backdrop.
I also find it exciting to visit markets everywhere I travel (and supermarkets too). Therefore, I recommend a visit to the market in Suzhou as well. We went to a market in atwo⁃story building near Shantang Street, but such local markets are basically in every partof the city.
There was a lot to see at the market. There were piles of different vegetables arranged by color. Mountains of fresh noodles looked incredibly tasty. Live shrimps, crabs, and otherseafood wriggled (扭動) around in basins. Wafts(一阵) of fragrance drifted over from thespice stalls. Some things were so special that I recognized them at first glance, like themany different kinds of tofu, or some sea creatures, and many a prepared meat dish.
While I didnt know where to look first, the market people chatted and joked withtheir customers and gossiped about us foreign visitors, but all in all, they seemed veryfriendly and relaxed and didnt mind that I took pictures.
