Profile of Mr.Yixun Lin

Yixun Lin,male,expert in operations research.He was born in Taishan City,Guangdong Province in December 1937.From 1956 to 1961,he studied in the Mathematics Department of Wuhan University.After graduation,he was assigned to teach in the Department of Mathematics of Zhengzhou University.He became a lecturer in 1979,an associate professor in 1982,a professor in 1986,and meanwhile the director of the teaching and research section of operational research.From 1988 to 1989,he went to the University of Southampton and the University of Birmingham in the United Kingdom as a visiting scholar.In 1996,he was approved as a doctoral supervisor in combinatorial mathematics and optimization.After 1997,he successively worked for a short time in Graz University of Technology in Austria and City University of Hong Kong.Mr.Yixun Lin has always been at the forefront of teaching in Zhengzhou University.In addition to the basic courses “Advanced Mathematics”,“Probability and Statistics” and the elective course“Optimization” for undergraduates,he also taught postgraduate courses such as “Combination Theory”,“Graph Theory”,“Combination Optimization” and “Computational Complexity”.He has supervised twenty-nine master students and eight doctoral students,and now most of them have become outstanding talents in their respective posts at home and abroad.Mr.Yixun Lin has been strongly supporting domestic teachers and students to throw themselves into operational research.

In 1956,under the strong advocacy of Professor Xuesen Qian,the Institute of Mechanics of the Chinese Academy of Sciences established the earliest operational research group in China.In the summer of 1958,a discussion on the integration of mathematical theory with practice was carried out in China’s mathematical circles,for which the Institute of Mathematics of the Chinese Academy of Sciences established an operational research group.Since then,Mr.Yixun Lin has begun his study and operational research.Therefore,he is one of the early scholars of operational research in China.His research achievements mainly focused on the problem of sequential combination optimization,including the problem of optimal labeling and scheduling system of graphs.Early achievements include “Proof of circular connection method” (Mathematical Bulletin,3(1959);Journal of Wuhan University,4(1959)) and “Solving an extreme value problem (i.e.location problem) with vector iteration method” (Journal of Wuhan University,1(1960)).In the 1970s,dynamic programming and optimization method,and theoretical proof of optimization method and numerical lofting of sheet metal were studied.In the 1980s,he entered the field of graph theory and combinatorial optimization,and solved the “(m,n) configuration bandwidth problem” proposed by the 7th Southeast Graph Theory Conference of the United States in 1982 (Science Bulletin,12(1982)).After the 1990s,he presided over and completed four NSFC projects,namely “Order Structure and Optimization of Discrete Systems”(1991-1993),“Scheduling,Labeling and Embedding in Combination Optimization” (1995-1997),“Some New Topics in Sequential Optimization” (1998-2000) and “Optimal Embedding of Graph and Communication Networks” (2001-2003).His published books include Linear Programmingand Network Flow (Henan University Press,1996),Dynamic Programming and Sequential Optimization (Henan University Press,1997) and Introduction to Sequencing and Timing Optimization (Science Press,1997).His academic articles have been published in the domestic and foreign journals such as Journal of Applied Mathematics Progress in Mathematics,Discrete Mathematics,European Journal of Operational Research etc.,of which 119 papers were included by MR.

Mr.Yixun Lin was rated as an excellent expert of Henan Province in 1990 and enjoyed a special government allowance from the State Council in 1991.He once served as a council member of the Chinese Mathematical Society (1995-1999),council member of the Operations Research Society of China (1984-2004),council member of the Chinese SIAM (1996-2004) and council member of the Systems Engineering Society of China (1990-2006).He once served as a member of editorial board of Mathematica Applicata (1994-1998),member of editorial board of Systems Science and Mathematical Sciences (1987-2004),member of editorial board of OR Transactions (1997-2008) and member of editorial board of Chinese Quarterly Journal of Mathematics (1985-) and reviewer of Mathematical Reviews (1986-1999).

Modest and kind,Mr.Lin Yixun combines leniency with strictness in his teaching,persuading students step by step and teaching students tirelessly,and meanwhile pursuing scientific research diligently.In our mind,he is not only a good mentor and friend,but also a kind and loving father,respected and loved by everyone.
