Unveiling Ceremony of Academician Li Xingxue’s Former Residence Scientists’ Spiritual Education Base held in Chenzhou of Hunan

In order to commemorate the 105thanniversary of the birth of Academician Prof. Li Xingxue, an internationally famous paleontologist and geologist,the unveiling ceremony of the Scientist’s Spiritual Education Base in the Former Residence of Li X. X.,co-sponsored by the Paleontological Society of China(PSC) and the Chenzhou Municipal Government,was held in Aoshanggu Village of Suxian District,Chenzhou City, Hunan Province on July 9, 2022.About 100 people attended the ceremony, including Mr. Ma T.Y. (Vice-Mayor of Chenzhou City), Academician Prof. Rong J.Y. (NIGPAS), Prof. Sun G.(Vice Supervisor General of PSC), Mr. Li K. H. (the son of Academician Li), and other guests and the local people. The ceremony was presided over by Prof. Wang Y. D. (Vice President of PSC), and four representatives delivered speeches in which they highly praised Academician Li’s scholarly spirit “to be persistent and diligent in learning”, and his great contributions to the scientific development of China,particularly to the development of Paleobotany in China. As the first Ph. D. graduate of Academician Li, Prof. Sun deeply missed his supervisor’s lofty patriotism and the spirit of devoting his life to the scientific cause, as well his so kind caring for students.

Academician Prof. Li X. X. was born in 1917 and graduated from Dept. Geology of Chongqing University in 1942. He died in 2010 at the age of 94.He once served as the Chairman of the Academic Committee of NIGPAS, Co-President of PSC, Director of the National Commission for Examination and Approval of Paleontological Terms of China, Chief Editor of Journal Acta Paleontologica Sinica, and the leader of Project Nanjing’s early human cultural sites.He was the Honorary Professor of Nanjing University,Jilin University, and Chairman of Academic the Committee of the Research Center of Paleontology& Stratigraphy (RCPS), Jilin Univ. In 1980, he was elected as Academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS). He was the founder of the research on Late Paleozoic “Cathaysian Flora” in China, and his famous classic works have been widely used by the international palaeobotany circle. In 1992, he was elected as a Corresponding Member of the American Botanical Society, and in 1996, he was awarded the“Sahni Paleobotany Medal” by the International Palaeobotany Association (IOP).
