Step One: Warming up
Play a piece of news about a heavy rainstorm happening in April,2015 and ask the students a question “What was happening in the video?”
Step Two: Leading in
Ask the students a question” What were you doing when the rainstorm came?” to lead in.

Task One: The basic points

Show the details with a time line.
Task Two: The important points
A. The differences between “when” and “while”
Sb. was /were doing +when sb. did sth.
While sb. was/ were doing sth , sb. did sth.
B. The differences the two tenses—The Past Progressive Tense and the Past Tense.
The Past Progressive Tense is to show the activity is going on and maybe it isnt finished.
The Past Tense is to show the activity happened in the past and it is finished.
Task Three: Some exercises to consolidate
Ask the students to fill in the blanks and tell the reasons.
Task Four: The important sentences in Section A with “was/were+ doing”.
1.Ask the students to read and translate the sentences to consolidate the sentences with “was/were doing”
2.Feelings after the rainstorm: Although it broke many things apart, it brought families and neighbors closer together.
Show the pictures of the students cleaning the snow and have the moral education: We need to help each other in times of difficulty.
Task Five: 2b of Section B
Show the pictures of Martin Luther King and the World Trade Center and ask the students what the two heroes were doing when the two things happened and how they felt.
Activity Two: Groupwork
Task One : Consolidate 2b.
Show the more recent event—COVID-2019. and ask the students what they were doing when they heard the news on TV.
Task Two: Video time
1.Play a piece of news about the virus and ask the students to pay attention to the two dates—Jan.23 and April 8.
2.After watching, ask the students to answer the questions: What happened on these two days?
Task Three: Make a survey in groups and then write a report.
(Ask the students to be actively, bravely and patiently). Show the report standards—A, B, C.
Task Four: Discussion
Discuss how to protect ourselves under the virus and call on the students to fight against the virus.

Step Four: Homework
A: Write down the survey result in groups.
B: Draw a mind map of the language of this unit.
