I wanted to have tea with Nirad in a tea break during a retreat (靜养). I was holding the cup so he could sip (小口喝) tea. I was careful and poured a small quantity in his mouth. I enjoyed concentrating on each moment and listening deeply to do a good job with serving tea.

We were immediately connected and befriended each other during this time. Two other retreat participants joined and then there were four people talking about varieties of topics which ranged from how Nirad progressed in his education to cool ones like how he maintains his weight, etc. These conversations brought smiles and it seemed that we all knew each other from long time ago. In subtle ways, we quietly felt the connection.

When we finished tea, I felt like tying a wristband for Nirad. The wristband had the letters that read “WE” on one side and “ME” on the other if read upside down. I told Nirad that my youngest brother is about his age, and he gave me a sweet, calm smile.

I felt deep content during this teatime. I had actually lived those moments, being sympathetic and friendly. It was an experience of joy. Later, during the retreat, each time Nirad and I happened to greet or talk, we smiled naturally and felt connected.

Its sad that we dont connect deeply, even with our family or friends. We are just too busy running after things, going nowhere. We dont seem to concentrate or care enough for people during our conversations. I had these valuable realizations later.

Doctors say anger can be a very harmful emotion unless you learn how to deal with it. They warn that angry feelings can lead to heart disease, stomach problems, headaches, emotional problems and possibly cancer.

Anger is a normal emotion that we all feel from time to time. Some people express anger openly in a calm reasonable way. Others burst with anger, losing control of themselves. But other people repress their anger. They cannot or will not express it.

For years many doctors thought that repressing anger was more dangerous to a persons health than expressing it. They said that when a person is angry, the brain gives off the same hormones (荷爾蒙) that are produced during tense situations. They speed the heart rate, raise blood pressure, or sugar into the blood and narrow the blood vessels (血管) to the interstices (空隙). In general, the person feels excited and ready to act.

Doctors said that repressing these feelings only makes the feelings continue. And this can lead to many medical problems. Doctors thought a person could prevent these problems by letting the anger out by expressing it freely. But recently some doctors held a different view. They said that people who express anger repeatedly and violently did become, in fact, more and not less angry.

They said this, too, can cause medical problems.

Some doctors say that both repressing and expressing anger can be dangerous. They believe that those who express anger violently may be more likely to develop heart disease, and they believe that those who keep their anger inside may face a greater danger of high blood pressure.

Doctors say the solution is learning how to deal with anger. They say the first step is to admit that you are angry and to recognize the real cause of the anger, and then decide if the cause is serious. If it is, they say, “Do not express your anger while angry. Wait until your anger has cooled down and you are able to express yourself calmly and reasonably.”

Whats your opinion about finding good friends? Speaking from my past experience, it is very difficult to find good friends that you can trust but once you have found them, they are worth keeping forever! Therefore, I think friendship is the most important relationship that anybody could have.

The qualities I look for in a friend are a good sense of humor and sensitivity (體贴). A friend would have to be strong-minded and highly spirited. I think that these qualities are the key qualities to look for in a good friend.

Even the best friends can still have arguments between themselves, though usually about more serious topics, rather than the usual childish arguments. Some matters can seriously affect friendship. If one of your friends started experimenting with harmful and dangerous drugs, what would you do? A good friend would try to help as much as possible, while a bad example of a friend would simply shrug (耸肩) and turn a blind eye.

Not only the bad things affect friendship—good activities do too, such as bonding with one another, not just by going out on a night with them, but by spending quality time with them and talking to each other. This is a key aspect of a good friendship.

Good friends do not always have to be in the same age group as you. I have a good friend and she is 47 years old and I am 16.

Unfortunately, some people lose contact with their friends as they grow older, which is a sad way to lose a good friend.

I think friendship is one of the most important things in life because if you have no friends, you will have no happiness.

12. What does the author think of true friendship?

A. It is easy to get.

B. It deepens with time.

C. It needs management.

D. It affects ones happiness.

13. What does Paragraph 3 suggest?

A. A friend should be reliable.

B. Drugs are bad for teenagers.

C. Real friends shouldnt be childish.

D. True friendship doesnt avoid arguments.

14. Which matters least in friendship according to the author?

A. Age. B. Confidence.

C. Sense of humor. D. Communication.

15. Which saying can match the authors view on friendship?

A. Old friends and old wines are best.

B. A friend without faults will never be found.

C. A friend to everybody is a friend to nobody.

D. A life without a friend is a life without sunshine.

The Spring Festival is the most important holiday for Chinese people. 1 The arrangements they have to make for family reunions, buying necessities and preparing food keep them busy throughout the holiday. With the countrys economic development and globalization, as it is celebrated today, the Spring Festival has undergone many changes.

2 People could not get good food they desired in earlier times, but decades of economic growth has ensured that most people in China can enjoy good meals whenever they want to.

In the past, the Spring Festival celebrations were limited to events, such as songs and dances, dragon or lion dances or fireworks. 3 But economic development and urbanization (城市化) seem to have weakened the social links among people.

4 In the past, people used to visit relatives and friends with gifts and lots of good wishes. Today, many people use their cellphones or the Internet to send their good wishes and even “gifts”. Some may say this is a sign that people have become less caring about their near and dear ones, but we should see this development as a time-and-energy-saving exercise brought by the information age.

Also we can see, some people have started praying to God or the Buddha for a career promotion (晋升) or more chances instead of for a long life or a fortune of their family. However, the number of such people is decreasing (减少) now. 5

A. They require joint efforts of people.

B. Yet no Spring Festival is complete without food.

C. But things like that do not apply to society today.

D. Many of them travel back home and meet friends.

E. Many Spring Festival customs have changed, too.

F. That shows people are becoming more reasonable.

G. It is the busiest time of the year for Chinese people.

I sometimes wonder if old Finchley has the right personality to be a research scientist. He keeps asking when hell be coming back. After all, it was his own fault. Nobody tries out what has just been invented on themselves any more but Finchley. Well, he must have pumped about a thousand cc into himself before I noticed he was clearly becoming smaller.

It was funny watching him, because his clothes remained the same in size. They simply piled up around him so that he looked like a small boy in his fathers clothes. But he kept getting smaller and smaller. As my colleague Dawson and I watched him, he disappeared! All we could see was Finchleys clothes on the floor. They looked so strange, because the lab coat was on top, shirt and trousers inside and, I suppose, underclothes inside again. It gave me a strange feeling, and I think Dawson was a bit shaken, too.

Dawson was sitting on his chair in front of a microscope hed been using to examine a family of mites (螨). He looked through the microscope kind of absently again, and was nearly scared to lose awareness when he found old Finchley waving back from the other end.

It seemed as if Finchley had taken a free ride on a dust mite and landed on the land of the mite family. Of course, we didnt know till Finchley told us later. But anyhow, as I said, Dawson nearly passed out. He jumped off his chair and pointed at the microscope, too shocked to speak.

4. Why did Finchley become smaller?

A. He tried out what has just been invented on himself.

B. He was covered up by his fathers clothes.

C. He was changed into a dust mite.

D. He took something poisonous.

5. What have Finchley, Dawson and the writer probably invented?

A. A new way to study the family of mites.

B. A machine to make people small.

D. Some kind of medicine.

6. Dawson was frightened to see Finchley ___ .

A. got out of his microscope by accident

B. gradually disappeared in the lab

C. suddenly got lost in his clothes

7. What can probably be concluded about Finchley?

A. He is a devoted scientist.

B. He is not fit to be a scientist.

C. He passed out there and then.

D. He will remain tiny all the time.

Music has a great effect on everyone. But does music affect plants, too? People have been experimenting with music for almost three decades. From school-level projects to higher-level scientific experiments, the effect of music on plants has been a confusing and debatable topic.

We know music is sound and sound is nothing more than a wave. Plant growth is a result of the cell division that takes place within the cells. But why is music associated with plant growth? In humans, music has a strong effect on our health and mood, and over the years, people have claimed that the same effect has been observed on plants, too. Plants are sensitive by nature, and many people claim that they have feelings just as humans do. There are stories about plants shedding tears. Although scientists do not support these as facts, these myths have led them to take up various experiments on plants.

Various studies have proved that plants respond to acoustic (音響的) energy. It increases their rate of growth and their size, and influences their overall health. Dan Carlson, after a thorough study over a span of many years, has reached a conclusion that music helps plants absorb nutrients (养分) more efficiently.

It took Dan about fifteen years to develop a foliage spray (叶面喷剂) that is used beneficially with the sound frequencies. Carlson calls this spray “Sonic Bloom”. His findings have proved to be beneficial for countless farmers and have resulted in—according to Guinness Book of World Records—the largest indoor plant on record.

The Purple Passion was treated with the Sonic Bloom process. It grew to be 1,300 feet tall and was alive even after 25 years. Its normal lifespan (壽命), however, is 18 months and it grows not more than 18 feet tall. The book, Secret of the Soil, writes about Sonic Bloom and its results. Sonic Bloom is also sold in the market.

Nature is full of color, from rainbows and roses to butterfly wings and peacock tails. Even the fruits and vegetables you eat have different colors: blue blueberries, red strawberries, green broccoli, and orange carrots.

Plants and animals often use color to attract attention. The substances responsible for these colors belong to a class of chemicals called antioxidants (抗氧化物). Plants make antioxidants to protect themselves from the suns ultraviolet (UV) light.

The UV light causes chemicals called free radicals (自由基) to form within plant cells. They can destroy parts of plant. Free radicals also have damaging effects on human beings. Some of these effects like wrinkled skin can be seen. The damage is caused by the free radicals attacking cells in our bodies. Certain cancers and heart disease are linked to free radicals.

Our bodies have natural defences for fighting off free radicals. While we are young, our defences are pretty strong. However, they get weaker as we get older. The bodys built-in defences can only go so far without extra help.

The key to fighting free radicals with fruits and vegetables is to mix and match colors. Its like sunscreen for the inside of your body. Go for a range of very bright colors. Colorful foods contain hundreds of healthy chemicals not found anywhere else.

Research into how chemicals in blueberries affect the brains function in rats suggests that these chemicals may help our own brains work more efficiently.

Dont just blame the sun. The UV light isnt the only source of free radicals. If you breathe polluted air such as smog, automobile exhaust, or wasted gas from a factory, you take in chemicals that also cause such damage. And the body itself produces free radicals as it processes food.

12. What is TRUE about antioxidants?

A. They use color to attract attention.

B. They can protect plants from UV light.

C. They help free radicals to attack plants.

D. They have nothing to do with plant colors.

13. In which order do the following facts occur?

a. Wrinkled skin can be seen.

b. The sun gives out UV light.

c. UV light causes free radicals to form.

d. Free radicals damage cells in our bodies.

A. b, d, c, a B. b, c, d, a

C. c, a, d, b D. d, b, a, c

14. Why do we need extra help to fight off free radicals with fruits and vegetables?

A. We are too young to defend ourselves.

B. Our defences get weaker as we get older.

C. Our bodies built-in defences are limited in power.

D. Our bodies defences are not naturally strong enough.

15. What can cause free radicals besides the UV light?

A. Clean air. B. Colorful food.

C. Oxygen gas. D. The body itself.

Christine was the girl in one of my classes. I never knew many about her except that she was strange. She disliked talk much. Her hair was black and purple, and she wears black sports shoes and a black sweater, even the summer. She was, in fact, rather attractively, and she never seemed to care how the rest of us thought about her. Like the rest of my classmate, I really wouldnt prefer to getting close to her. It was only when we did our chemistry project together that I began to understand it why Christine dressed the way she did.

Secrets I Know (Random House Childrens Books, ages 3—7)

This tale written by Kallie George and pictured by Paola Zakimi follows a young girl and her little friend as they move from rain to sunshine, from pleasant loneliness to sweet friendship, and finally from adventures on earth to an exploration of the sky above. The colors of Zakimis pencil drawings are calming and Georges poetic text tells her story with simple language.

Pandora (Clarion Books, ages 3—7)

The award-winning author Victoria Turnbull tells the story of a little fox Pandora. Pandora lives alone. She makes herself a handsome home, but no one ever comes to visit. I felt like I had clicked my heels three times and come to a country away from home every morning as I walked through the doors at the Embassy of Australia in Washington. Musical Aussie accents and aboriginal (土著的) art exhibits made me wonder if I had entered without a visa. In fact, I was a temporary employee, a public affairs unpaid intern (实习生) for three months during the summer in order to engage myself in the culture of the country where I planned to study the next spring.

During the summer I read the Australian news every day. Working at the embassy allowed me to escape the US for six hours per day and learn about what was going on across the planet. After reading the daily Australian and US news I usually helped prepare a PowerPoint presentation for school kids who visited the embassy as part of a school activity. Depending on whether an embassy event was going on, I would attend weekly meetings to listen to planning and see what I could do to help. Usually there were smaller tasks to be done such as creating visitors guide.

The most fantastic event in which I participated was the visit of the Australian Prime Minister. As the only American among countless Australian media and staff, I felt comfortable and was kept busy taking pictures and recording doorstop interviews at famous sites such as the Capitol. As an intern, you will not be exposed to top-secret information, but you are on the inside when it comes to special events.

When Tara Wood brought her daughter to a grocery store to buy the four-year-old some cupcakes, she had no idea that would be a life-changing experience.

As Tara pushed her daughter Norah around the store last month, she passed an old man who was by himself. The old man looked cold, until Norah shouted to him, “Hi! Its my birthday today!” The man stopped and his demeanor changed from distant and serious to warm and friendly. “How old are you today?” the man asked. After some time talking together, Norah asked her mom to take a picture of her with her new friend “Mr Dan”, Dan Peterson, 82. They hugged and after ten minutes went their separate ways. That could have been the end of the story. But it is actually the beginning of a special relationship.

Tara posted the picture of her daughter and Mr Dan on Facebook and someone who recognized him reached out to her with his contact information. It turned out that Mr Dans wife died in March and he had been suffering from depression and anxiety ever since. The person on Facebook told Tara that it was the first time they had seen Mr Dan smile since the death of his wife. Knowing that, Tara contacted Mr Dan, and ever since Norah and the 82-year-old have developed a friendship unlike any other. “She has shown me a depth of love, a depth that I didnt know existed,” Mr Dan told the reporter.

Mr Dan told Tara that before meeting Norah, he hadnt had one night of uninterrupted sleep. Anxiety kept him up at all hours and made him restless. After meeting Norah, he said he now sleeps soundly. For Mr Dans 82nd birthday, the mother and the daughter brought balloons and presents—and, of course, cupcakes. Going to sleep may seem pretty boring compared with all the fun things you do while you are awake. But theres a lot going on in your mind and body while you are sleeping.

Sleep, in fact, is as important to your survival as eating and drinking. Sleep improves your mood, makes you a better athlete, and helps you remember and understand what you learned during the day.

During sleep your body temperature drops and your heart rate slows. Down goes the pressure of the blood moving through your veins (血管). A chemical that controls growth (called hormone) moves into your bloodstream. Scientists think that sleep brings back energy and improves your immune (免疫) system. We know what happens while were asleep because scientists study volunteers who sleep in laboratories. The sleepers are connected with machines that measure brain waves, eye movements and muscle activities.

Sleep is like a school day: its divided into different periods or stages. When you are awake, your brain waves fire rapidly. As you begin to relax and drift into (不知不覺陷入) the first stage of sleep, your brain produces slower-moving waves and you lose awareness of your surroundings. As you slide to deeper sleep, your body repairs itself from the normal wear and tear of daily life. Then, as you begin to drift back up to a lighter sleep, your mind becomes more alert, and your dreams begin. You are in REM sleep.

REM is the name for the rapid eye movement that happens while you are dreaming. During REM sleep, your eyes move back and forth behind your eyelids, as though you were watching a movie. During other stages, you might move in bed, but during REM sleep youre still. Thats probably because if you could move, your body would act out your dreams. As you get close to morning, you spend more time in REM than in deep sleep, so you dream more. Researchers know that during REM sleep the part of the brain that deals with learning and thinking is very active.

Getting too little sleep can affect your personality. Experts recommend that children get at least nine hours sleep a night.

12. What can we learn about sleep from Paragraph 2?

A. It is important and quite necessary.

B. It has little to do with your mood.

C. It will make you a good athlete.

D. It drops body temperature a lot.

13. What is the right order of the stages of sleep?

① Your body repairs itself from the normal wear  and tear of daily life.

② Your brain produces slower-moving waves.

③ Your dream begins.

④ You lose awareness of surroundings.

A. ①③②④ B. ②④①③

C. ④①③② D. ④③①②

14. In what kind of sleep do you have more dreams?

A. Light sleep. B. Deep sleep.

C. REM sleep. D. The first two stages of sleep.

15. How long should children sleep per night at least according to some expert?

A. Six hours. B. Seven hours.

C. Eight hours. D. Nine hours.

Kong Zhenlan, a 71-year-old woman from Chinas Shanxi Province, has devoted the last four decades of her life to adopting orphans (孤儿), making sure that they had food on the table and got access to education.

Even though she could only afford to support herself on a modest income, Kong Zhenlan couldnt bear to walk by the orphanage in Jixian County every day and see so many children struggling in poverty. One day, she stopped by and picked one of the orphans in her arms. Thats when she knew she had to do something to make their life better. The modest woman started adopting these abandoned children and nurturing (養育) them as her own. Over the last 47 years, she has adopted 45 orphans, some of whom grew up to become doctors and lawyers.

Kongs oldest adopted child is 45-years-old, while her youngest is 9-months-old. Today, her adult children donate some of their monthly salaries to help bring up their younger siblings (兄弟姐妹), but in the beginning, the woman had to make duel with what she had. And it wasnt much. She would spend all her money making sure the children had milk to drink, and if there was none left for her, she would look for leftovers in local garbage cans.

The modest woman recently told Pear Video that over the last 40 years she has only been getting 2 hours of sleep per night. She goes to sleep at around midnight, after putting the children to sleep and finishing up her chores, and gets up around 2 am to check if theyre all still covered with blankets. She has gotten used to it and said that a short sleep was a small price to pay for making sure the children grow up healthy and happy.

People do not like being separated from their mobile phones, even while enjoying a restful holiday at the beach. However, the phone battery may become exhausted completely. If that happens, they have no choice but to connect the phone to the power supply. But its impossible to get the battery charged at the beach. Whats worse, the hot sun is shining right overhead, and the water in the bottle is sure to reach a very high temperature.

Antoine Sayah, a university student from Lebanon, developed a special beach mat called the Beachill. It looks similar to the ordinary beach mat and will cause back pain as well. However, the device can recharge any mobile phone. It is designed to be water-resistant (防水的) and has a 5-watt solar panel (面板), which provides power continuously. The mat also has the refrigeration equipment that can help keep drinks cool, just like the refrigerator.

Rome—Doctors and medical groups around the world last weekend reacted with strong opposition to the news that an Italian specialist is on the brink of cloning the first human baby.

Dr Severino Antinori, who is the head of a hospital in Rome, has been referred to in an Arab newspaper as claiming that one of his patients is eight weeks pregnant with a cloned baby.

Antinori refused to comment on the reports, but he said he hoped to produce a cloned embryo (卵) for implantation (植入) within two years. So far seven different kinds of mammals have already successfully cloned, including sheep, cats and most recently rabbits.

Doctors showed their doubt and were strongly opposed although they admitted that human cloning would finally come true unless there was a worldwide ban on the practice.

Professor Rudolf Jaeniscb of the Whitehead Institute for Biomedical Research at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology said, “I find it astonishing that people do this where the result can be predicted that it will not be a normal baby. It is using humans as Guinea pigs. It makes people feel sick.”

But Ronald Green, director of the Ethics Institute at Dartmouth College in the US, said it was unlikely that an eight-week-old pregnancy would lead to a birth.

So far all cloned animals have suffered from some different serious disorders, many of them dying soon after their births.

Doctors are opposed to human cloning because they are worried about the welfare of the cloned child if there is one.

“There are no benefits of cloned human beings, just harm,” said Dr Michael Wilks of the UK.

12. What does the underlined phrase “on the brink of” in Paragraph 1 most probably mean?

A. On the side of. B. On the point of.

C. In search of. D. In favor of.

13. What is the doctors general attitude to the cloning of humans?

A. They support it. B. They welcome it.

C. They are against it. D. They pay no attention to it.

14. What can we learn about the cloned animals?

A. They are active.

B. They are born unhealthy.

C. They live a relatively long life.

D. They have a different charactor from the normal.

15. What does the text mainly tell us about human cloning?

A. Its failure. B. Its success.

C. The anger at it. D. Voices against it.

A major source of teen stress is school exams, and test anxiety is not uncommon. When you recognize your teen is under stress, how can parents help your teen stay calm before an exam?

Be involved. Parents need to be involved in their teens work. 1 What they look for is your presence—to talk, to cry, or simply to sit with them quietly. Communicate openly with your teen. Encourage your teen to express his worries and fears, but dont let him focus on those fears.

Help them get organized. 2 Together, you and your teen can work out a timetable in which he can study for what he knows will be on the test.

Provide a calm setting. Help your teen set up a quiet place to study and protect his privacy. Give him a nutritious diet. It is important for your teen to eat a healthy, balanced diet during exam times to focus and do his best. 3 If this happens, encourage your teen to eat light meals or sandwiches. A healthy diet, rather than junk food, is best for reducing stress.

4 Persuade your teen to get some sleep or do something active when he needs a real break from studying. Making time for relaxation, fun, and exercise is important in reducing stress. Help your teen balance his time so that he will feel comfortable taking time out from studying to spend time with friends or rest.

Show a positive attitude. 5 Your panic, anxiety and blame contribute to your teens pressure. Make your teen feel accepted and valued for his efforts. Most importantly, reassure your teen that things will be all right, no matter what the results are.

A. Encourage your teen to relax.

B. The best thing is simply to listen.

C. They will only make the situation worse.

D. Parents attitude will influence their teens emotions.

E. Exam stress can make some teens want to eat nothing.

F. Your teen may also make negative comments about himself.

G. Help your teen think about what he has to study and plan accordingly.

Although this was the first time that I had left home, but I really had a good time.

With friendship, life is happy and harmonious. Without friendship, life is sad and unfortunate. I have friends in high positions and friends in the rank and file. Some are rich and in power. Some are relatively poor and without power. Some are like myself, working as a teacher, reading and writing, content with a simple life. We all care for each other, love and help each other. We feel we are the happiest when we chat and exchange ideas with one another. With my friends, I know what to treasure, what to tolerate and what to share.
