Abstract: The construction and improvement of the theoretical system underlies the development of Local Chronicles Study. Since the Qianlong and Jiaqing periods of the Qing Dynasty, scholars have carried out theoretical research on the general foundations of the concept and entity, nature and characteristics of local chronicles, as well as the development history of local chronicles, local chronicle literature, local chronicle compilation, local chronicle catalogue and local chronicle figures. Most of the results have been in the forms of papers, treatises and collected papers; and the rich practical application achievements of chronicles compilation, sorting out of previous chronicles, management practice, discipline construction, and exchange and communication are also some of the forms of local chronicles achievements. Comprehensively considering the reality of local chronicles achievements, this paper takes 1949 as the dividing point and selects the local chronicles achievements with distinctive characteristics in each period for sorting and elaboration.

•PreliminaryDiscussionontheEditionandLiteratureValueofDraftofJinshanCountyAnnalsofXianfengPeriod*
ChenJi,WangBin(33)
Abstract:DraftofJinshanCountyAnnalsof Xianfeng Period is a private chronicle compiled mainly by Qian Xitai with the participation of Dong Zhaoxiong, Yao Huaiqiao, Zhang Wenhu and other local celebrities and social elites. Yao Luling, the then magistrate of Jinshan County, paid great attention to and showed great concern for this private chronicle based on the local chronicle concept of "full-time, interview, collective writing and selflessness." It came afterJinshanCountyAnnalsof Qianlong Period andDraftofJinshanCountyAnnalsof Daoguang Period and was followed byRecompilationofJinshanCountyAnnalsof Guangxu Period. Unfortunately, due to personnel changes and chaos caused by war and other reasons, it was left unfinalized and unpublished, resulting in errors and loss in the process of circulation. There are two versions of the book in existence, one in Shanghai Library and the other in Taiwan Library, but neither of them is the version seen in the recompilation of Guangxu Period, and their important literature value lies mainly in reflecting the innovation of previous chronicle styles, making textual research of predecessors' errors and retaining lost scripts.

ZhangBaojian(47)
Abstract: The compilation of chronicles in China has a long history. Economic prosperity and cultural thriving provided favourable conditions for the compilation of Sichuan chronicles. There are four chronicles of Sichuan Province compiled in Ming Dynasty and three compiled in Qing Dynasty to date, each with its own characteristics. Sichuan General Annals of Jiaqing Period is the last official compilation of Sichuan chronicles during the Qing Dynasty. The compilation of it benefited from the adequate financial support and effective organization and operation. It is permeated with the concept of safeguarding the emperor's supreme status and reflects the majesty of imperial power. Being a successful and typical general outline of history, it is complicated but in order, well-organized, inclusive, and well-done in textual research and examination. The section about "Western Regions" in the book reflects the close relationship between Tibet and Sichuan in the early Qing Dynasty and preserves some precious and unique materials. There are many Qing block-printed editions?of it available, and there have been photocopies of it in recent years, but there has been no checked copy so far.

•"Foreigners”inXujiahui:StoriesoftheDeceasedinRelationsdeChine
ZhangXiaoyi(52)
Abstract: Xujiahui in Shanghai once played an important role in the history of modern cultural exchanges between China and the West, while the foreign scholars in Xujiahui played a key role as the main body of cultural exchange between China and the West. However, little is known by the academia about these foreigners, especially their life before they came to China. There are many errors of historical facts in the texts describing and introducing this group of people, who have been viewed only under the context of French expatriates, resulting in self-contradictory evaluations of these people. Based on the obituaries in the French periodicalRelationsdeChine(1903-1940), this paper sorts out the life stories of these "foreigners" in Xujiahui, especially their life before and shortly after coming to China. Considering these foreign scholars as the main body of cultural exchange between China and the West, this paper describes how these people that had been away from their home countries for many years carried out cultural exchange activities between China and the West with Xujiahui as the center, further demonstrating the fact that Xujiahui was a hub for cultural exchange between the East and the West at that time.

WangJiahao(68)
Abstract: Due to the long-term of influence of the International Settlement, the Chinese Controlled District in Shanghai had accumulated a lot of experience in public health. In 1928, the Nationalist Government was founded in Nanjing, and a large number of laws, regulations and notices were issued in the Chinese Controlled District in Shanghai, where the health policy framework was initially established. However, in the following decade, there were still a lot of health problems in the Chinese Controlled District in Shanghai, mainly including the high mortality due to the large number of flowing population, people's lack of legal wareness as the result of low cost of crimes, lack of corresponding regulatory measures, and weak law enforcement by civil servants. Reviewing the problems once encountered has a certain reference value for the construction of health prevention and control mechanism in the post-Covid-19 epidemic era.

Abstract: Local history is the history of studying a certain space. The jurisdiction scope of a region differs in ancient and modern times, and its spatial scope often changes dynamically with the development of history. Considering the historical context and spatial scope as a systematic whole, rather than being mechanically limited to the current administrative division, the description of the process of local social and economic development can be more comprehensive and objective. We should pay attention to the diversity and folk nature of local history data collection, and strengthen the integration, individual case and comparative research of local history study. The study of the historical spatial scope of Changzhou, an ancient city in the regions south of the Yangtze River is typical, and the variability and network of spatial scope must be taken into consideration.

•TheResponsesofPublicOpinionafterChenQimeiwasMurdered
WuYanzhao(83)
Abstract: On May 18, 1916, Chen Qimei was assassinated at No. 14 Rue Chapsal in the French Concession in Shanghai. When the news came out, all sectors of society were shocked, and the responses of the press were very intense. The press paid close attention to the details of Chen Qimei's case and the identity of the murderer. The Kuomintang side emphasized that Yuan Shikai was the political mastermind of the "Chen Case." After reviewing the public opinion newspapers in North and South China at that time, the political connection between Yuan Shikai and Feng Guozhang in the assassination of Chen Qimei can be perceived. Afterwards, the Kuomintang tried hard to take advantage of the public's compliments to Chen to achieve the political goal of "Anti-Yuan campaign," and to turn the public media against Yuan Shikai's government. Most of the positive comments on Chen were made by the newspaperman groups of the Kuomintang clique and Kuomintang dignitaries, while other news media appeared to be indifferent to the case and mostly left negative comments. In April 1927, with the founding of the Nationalist Government in Nanjing, Chen Qimei was commemorated for another 20 years or more. Later, the media portrayed Chen as a "revolutionary martyr." A state funeral for Chen Qimei was held.
