Formal Afternoon Teas

A pot of tea, a plate of finger sandwiches and a selection of pastries and scones: In America, this wonderful way to while away the afternoon is commonly, though mistakenly, known as “high tea”. In Britain, where it originated, “high tea” is simply an old-fashioned name for the evening meal; it's also called “meal tea”. The light, elegant, scone-centric meal served at fancy hotels is called “low tea” or “afternoon tea”. Whatever you call it, here are four places to get afternoon tea on Long Island. Prices are per person.

Chat Noir

230 Merrick Rd., Rockville Centre

516-208-8521, chatnoirtea.com

Owner Emma Tso is a talented pastry chef, and her afternoon tea($22) includes sandwiches, miniature pastries, warm scones, cream and jam and a pot of tea. Open 7 days a week. Reservations required.

Robinson's Tea Room

97-E Main St., Stony Brook

631-751-1232

Robinson's service afternoon tea Tuesday to Sunday. $26 buys unlimited tea, about 10 finger sandwiches, fresh scones, cream and jam and desserts. Reservations required.

The Secret Garden Tea Cafe & Gift Shoppe

225 Main St., Port Jefferson

631-476-8327, thesecretgardentearoom.com

The Street Garden's menu has more modest options, but the full afternoon tea, $26.95, includes scones, fresh fruit, tea sandwiches, mini desserts and a pot of tea. Open Tuesday to Sunday.

The Hidden Oak Cafe

Bayard Cutting Arboretum, Montauk Highway, Great River

631-277-3895, bayardcuttingarboretum.org

The cafe is open Tuesday to Sunday. Afternoon tea($25.95) includes tea sandwiches, desserts and pastries, scones with cream and jam and a pot of tea. Reservations required 24 hours in advance.

1. What do we know about British afternoon tea?

A. It's known as “meal tea”.      B. It's centered on desserts.

C. It's served at fancy hotels.      D. It's originated from America.

2. Which number should you call to reserve for a Monday afternoon tea?

A. 516-208-8521. B. 631-751-1232. C. 631-476-8327. D. 631-277-3895.

3. Where can you get afternoon tea with fresh fruit?

A teen had a 265-pound gift for his teacher if he could overcome his stage fright enough to pull it off. He succeeded—and the gift really brought home the bacon.

A shy 15-year-old boy was heartbroken to hear that his favorite teacher was retiring (退休). Kim—or “Miss K” as he called her—was stepping down from her position as an educator so she could devote her time to Beat Nb: a charity that raises money for medical research.

To help Miss K, Waylon decided to take the pig he'd raised and auction (拍賣) it off at the county fair and donate (捐赠) all the money—but after several people heard about his unselfishness, the auction took a very unexpected turn.

The boy had emailed his situation to several companies who would be buying—hoping they would bid (出價) higher than the usual price of $3-to-4 per pound. His plan worked. When the bidding kicked off, the price jumped to $11, but then one of the bidders, Dan, had an idea and struck a deal with his competition. He won the bidding on the pig, then he donated it back to be auctioned again. The second winner bought it for $10 a pound, but then he gave it back, too.

Finally, a third competitor, Dave Moll, was free to buy—then, he, too, unexpectedly donated the pig back—for a third time. Dave Moll, who is Waylon's father's employer, said, “I hadn't planned to spend that much money or give the pig back. But that's what the people ahead of me did, and I felt like it was the right thing to do, so I did.”

The pig was finally bought and sold a fourth time for $5.50 per pound, meaning that Waylon managed to raise $10,070 for his teacher's charity. “I did not see that happening,” Waylon said. “Usually, they just sell it once! My dream got bigger and bigger every time they said, ‘Give it back.'”

“I'm so proud of him,” Miss K said. “He doesn't know the influence that he is having. Someday he will.”

4. Why did Waylon auction his pig off?

A. To beat his stage fright.            B. To buy Miss K a present.

C. To make money for his education.    D. To help Miss K raise money.

5. Waylon sent emails to these companies to ________.

A. sell the pig at a better price        B. tell them how good the pig was

C. ask them if they would buy the pig  D. tell them where the auction would be held

6. What does the underlined phrase “struck a deal” in paragraph 4 mean?

A. Broke a deal. B. Went on strike.

C. Reached an agreement. D. Made an appointment.

7. What can we infer from paragraph 5?

A. Waylon's father is a good employee.

B. The pig was bought by Dave Moll at last.

C. People didn't expect Dave Moll to return the pig.

D. Dave Moll didn't want to keep the pig himself at first.

Olivia Wise, a teenager who refused to let an inoperable brain tumor kill her spirit, died Monday. Olivia gained fame in the last weeks of her 16-year-long life when a Katy Perry song Katy Perry, who is famous for her songs and song-writing in America, recorded in a Toronto studio in September became a viral hit online. “She died peacefully in her home surrounded by the special love of her family,” a family statement sent to CNN said. The teenager said that she didn't want people crying at her funeral, but that they should celebrate her life, her mother wrote in a letter to CNN.

Her version of Perry's hit “Roar”, which she recorded in September after learning there were no more treatments available, drew the attention of Perry after it was published on YouTube in October. “I was very moved and you sounded great,” Perry told her in a video posted on YouTube. “I love you. A lot of people love you and that's why your video got to me. It moved everybody that saw it.”

Perry ended with: “Keep roaring!”

The international attention drew more than a million viewers to Olivia's song and helped raise $77,000 for the Liv Wise Fund that was started in her name in support of brain tumor research.

The video shows OIivia sitting in a wheelchair in the middle of the studio, singing softly at first and struggling with her breaths.

“Cause I am a champion, and you're gonna hear me roar.”

Her energy grows and she smiles as she sings “I got the eye of a tiger, a fighter, dancing through the fire.”

“Olivia is a fighter and has gone through the fire,” her cousin wrote in the post under the video posting on YouTube. “In fact, she was going through the fire while she recorded this song, but you wouldn't know it, because she was dancing right through it.”

Her family posted another song video on YouTube just days before Olivia's death. She wrote “Simple Girl”—a song about how she wanted to live life—when she was 11. The only time she sang it was on September 6, during the same session in which she recorded “Roar”.

8. What can we infer from a family statement?

A. Her life is of great value.        B. She faces death quietly.

C. Her friends don't cry for her.    D. She ended up with her life.

9. Why did the author mention Katy Perry?

A. To help the teenager to get rid of the terrible disease.

B. To encourage people to learn from the teenager widely.

C. To cause people to pay more attention to the teenager.

D. To help the teenager to record the song she would like.

10. From the text, we can learn that the Liv Wise Fund helps to ________.

A. support brain tumor research B. start a new song program

C. encourage people to sing  D. collect money from the world

11. What can we infer from the text?

A. Olivia Wise is a brave fighter in the woods.

B. Roar is Olivia Wise's most famous song.

C. Olivia Wise is struggling for her song.

D. Olivia Wise is courageous and loves life.

You've probably heard the phrase “save the bees”. But on Tuesday, engineers at University of Washington said that they have designed wireless platforms to be worn by bees. The bees may be saving the small drone (無人机). Although drones have become a symbol of future technology, the short battery life on small drones has been a problem. The bumblebee(a large bee) can stay in the air a lot longer.

The researchers call their inventions a flying wireless platform with sensors (传感器) and trackers (追踪器) that rides live insects. The sensor package is a small battery that lasts up to seven hours of flight and is light on the bee weighing 102 mg.

A lot of tests have been done by the researchers. They track the bees through antennas (天线) and radio waves. And it does help that bees are always close to where the bees live. The bee collects data throughout its daily flight. When it returns, the battery can be changed and researchers are sent the data.

The researchers think their design could also help understand the reason why the bee population is becoming extinct. The population of bees is becoming smaller and smaller, which has led to fears that without them, our food industry could be in danger.

The researchers promise the tiny creatures are safe with their new fashionable tech. “We decided to use bumblebees because they're large enough to carry a tiny battery. It is very simple. All we are doing is just putting on a small backpack, and it is very easy for these bees to carry. They go and fly around and are completely fine.”

12. What is the purpose of designing the wireless platforms?

A. To stop the small bees from dying out.

B. To improve the work of the smaller drone.

C. To deal with the problem of poor battery life on drone.

D. To help the flying bees to stay in the air for a longer time.

13. What does Paragraph 3 mainly tell us?

A. How researchers do the test.          B. How the battery is changed.

C. Where the bees collect the data.      D. When the small bees return.

14. What do we know about the bees?

A. They are safe.                    B. Their number is reducing.

C. They are used as sensors.            D. They are dangerous.

15. What does the underlined word “They” in the last paragraph refer to?

A. The small drones. B. The researchers. C. The bumblebees. D. The trackers.

Learn to Cite Sources

During your university education, you'll be exposed to ideas and scientific theories of scholars and scientists. Unavoidably, your own ideas will be shaped by the ideas you come across. __1__That means you should go beyond what you learn in your textbooks or in the library. Your original work is the basis for your professor's evaluation of your performance. Thus, academic honesty is fundamental in your university education. It demands that you cite sources (引用資料) you base your own work on. __2__

Correctly citing your sources helps you distinguish your own ideas from those of other scholars. On the readers' side, it permits a reader to determine the depth of your research. __3__ On the contrary, lack of citing will only raise your reader's doubt.

So you need to learn when to cite and how to provide an adequate or accurate reference list. If you fail to cite your sources, whether deliberately or carelessly, you will be found responsible for plagiarism (抄袭). __4__ If you are not sure, ask your professor for guidance before submitting the paper or report. Keep in mind this general rule: when in doubt, cite!

__5__ For example, students from East Asia may think that copying directly from sources is the proper way to do research. Students in France, preparing for the final examination, may be encouraged to memorize whole passages and copy them into papers. Those cultural differences can lead to false assumptions about academic expectations in the country you study in.

A. Some university students may cheat in different ways.

B. These include other scholars' ideas, figures, graphs and so on.

C. The academic challenge you face is to make something original.

D. Often, students want to use others' opinions to support their own essays.

E. It also allows a reader to appreciate your original contribution to the research.

F. For international students, it is important to know local academic expectations.

G. Not knowing academic regulations is an unacceptable excuse for such behavior.
