With fingers weary and worn, 手指疲惫了,
With eyelids heavy and red, 眼皮赤肿了,
A Woman sat in unwomanly rags, 在那儿坐着的褴褛的女人,
Plying her needle and thread, 忙着她的针和线——
Stitch! stitch! stitch! 一针—一针—一针!
In poverty,hunger,and dirt, 在贫苦、饥饿、污秽里,
And still with a voice of dolorous pitch, 还用着一节哀郁的调子,
She sang the“Song of the Shirt!” 她唱起《衬衣的歌曲》:
“Work! work! work! 工作—工作—工作!
While the cock is crowing aloof ! 当鸡声从远处啼起!
And work—work —work, 工作—工作—工作,
Till the stars shine through the roof ! 星光穿进了屋底顶际!
It’s oh,to be a slave 啊,这可算得奴隶,
Along with the barbarous Turk, 跟着野蛮的土耳其,
Where women has never a soul to save, 在那里没个女人得救了,
If this is Christian work! 那是基督式的劳役!

And sew them on in a dream! 缝着他们入梦了!
“O men,with sisters dear! 啊,谁无姐妹亲爱的!

As prisoners work for crime! 像囚徒为着犯罪辛勤!

Of the cowslip and primrose sweet— 那蔷薇樱草的香味。
With the sky above my head, 碧落临头上,
And the grass beneath my feet, 青草踏足底,
For only one short hour, 只要短短的一刻
To feel as I used to feel, 感受我惯于感受的,
Before I knew the woes of want 但在忆起贫苦之前呀,
And the walk that costs a meal! 散步化去了一顿吃食;
“Oh,but for one short hour! 啊纵是短短的片刻的憩息!
A respite however brief ! 没有幸福的清闲来爱来希望哟,
No blessed leisure for love or hope, 只能有时间来个哀戚!
But only time for brief ! 微泣会安慰我的心,
A little weeping would ease my heart; 但在咸的眼湖里,
But in their briny bed 泪也必须停止哟,
My tears must stop,for every drop 一点滴便耽搁了一针一丝!
