Misunderstanding of the grass scripts of calligraphynow

The grass scripts of calligraphy occupies an important position in calligraphy， It is the most artistic， expressive， and lyrical books. However， it is also the most easily misunderstood in the moment. Due to the development of itself and the misunderstandings caused by peoples strangeness to it， this paper attempts to explain general appreciation methods， in order to let people understand it more.

We can use the following aspects as the standard of appreciation for the art：1. Beautiful lines.“Calligraphy is the art of lines.” The lines of calligraphy， especially the lines of grass scripts， have obvious features. It not only has the difference in shape， the difference in direction， but also the differences in disease， moistness， obscuration， texture， strength and so on. The line art is so strange and unpredictable that it can best express the subtle inner feelings of a artist. 2.Structural beauty Appreciation of the structure， the general understanding is often whether the structure is neat， whether it meets the requirements of balanced symmetry， it is not entirely true. Balance symmetry is certainly a basic requirement， but the beauty of the structure pays more attention to the balance and symmetry， and whether the change is innovative or unconventional. The successful cursive art structure is balanced and symmetrical， and the parts are contrasted; there are lengths， sizes， widths， sparseness， and straightness... all kinds of new and varied changes， thus forming a diverse and unified harmony.The different forms of the grass word are stable and honest， there are open walks， there are strong and straight， there are graceful flying， some are “successful to win”， and some are seen in “plain”. The beauty of the grass script is precisely configured by the basic lines of strokes （thick， thin， long， short， bent， raised， stretched， and contracted） and the radicals （upper， lower， higher， lower， wider， narrower， meandering， positive）. In modern calligraphy exhibitions，  grass works tend to have a considerable proportion. These revelations seem to tell us the mature position of it and the artistic expression of dripping.The aesthetics of it includes two meanings of appreciation and analysis. The two are different and related. The difference is that appreciation is based on intuition， and the process of rational analysis is analyzed; but appreciation always needs to be analyzed， and the analysis contains the elements of appreciation. The fun of grass scripts art may not be clear at a glance， and the adventures are deep and begin to see wonders. The exquisite and magnificent grass art is not in its spirit but in the spirit， and it needs to be in the heart and soul. Generally speaking， our appreciation process for a grass art work is like this： the first “macro”， appreciate the overall momentum of the whole frame， and appreciate the overall impression; then “middle view”， to refine the overall beauty of the structure.The last “micro”， taste full of pen beauty， point beauty， artistic conception. From far and near， from slow to slow， the three complement each other， not suitable or embarrassing.
