Analysis on Methods How to Improve English Writing Ability for High School Students

【Abstract】Writing is the key element in English learning. English writing reflects a high school student’s comprehensive application capability, showing the English basis. English writing is entitled with more strong practical importance.

I. Problems in high school English writing teaching

(I) Influence by thinking model of Chinese language

Nowadays, almost all the high school students learning English in Chinese language environment, there is no chance for them to contact with the mother tong English speaker. As influenced by Chinese language thinking model, most students may follow up the Chinese expression way in English writing. Students always fill up the thoughts and contents which are organized in Chinese language thinking way into the English writing structure or frame, or translate the words and writing contents literally and directly into English words and expressions without any secondary processing on language thinking. This kind of continuous writing is no doubt a direct reflection of Ching English.

(II) Full of Examination-oriented education flavor

During English learning, I find that some English examination papers are often prepared with some excellent writing models in the answer sheet as reference. Students may just change and fill up some suitable words into the fixed writing structure or frame in accordance with the requirements of different writing topics in examination papers. This is a good method indeed which can increase scores in some extent, but we all know that it is a rigid model only meeting the examination requirements, in doing so, writing psychology or thinking is imprisoned in the rigid form.

(III) Result of the dull teaching method

English writing class for high school students adopts traditional teaching method, i.e. writing product is the only standard to determine writing ability. During school, high school students are required to emphases the accuracy of grammar and expression as well as the proficiency of vocabulary and words. In our studies, teacher’s importance are magnificent, while the students are in down-stream group under the teaching mode characteristic of reception and spoon-feeding and some learning mode typical of imitating, drilling, and reciting are formed.

II. Some suggestions on how to improve high school students’ English writing ability

(I) Pay much more attention to positive transfer of English writing

Chinese language is our mother tongue which we speak, listen read and write from child to old. It is totally wrong to learn about the western thinking way painstakingly as well as abandon our Chinese language thinking way. There are lots of differences between Chinese and English writing; however, we can take use of the common points between Chinese writing and English writing to get positive transfer. In English writing teaching process, Chinese lessons are combined, such as, when we learn the Unit 1 Festivals and celebrations in High School English Book 3, we discuss some topics on our festivals e.g. national day and new years day as we are enlightened by the content in book, and express the customs and celebrations through writing a short passage in English.

(II) Lay emphasis on basic knowledge teaching of English language

English writing requires students in comprehensive application of many knowledge points such as vocabulary, grammar and reading. Any student who focuses efforts on certain knowledge point over others may not write good composition. First, we should have the basic knowledge of English language at our fingers’ ends, and practice the vocabulary, grammar and reading more and more to increase familiarity. Secondly, we should improve personnel practicality on English language, absorb the basic knowledge inside our mind and then turn it into applicable knowledge.

(III) Innovative development on writing teaching

In traditional class room teaching, teacher teaches and students learn is the teaching model we adopted till now. From the aspect on students, we should ask questions enthusiastically and communicate with the teacher about the Frequently Asked Questions in accordance with their own situations. Learning is a mutual communication between teacher and student.

III. Conclusions

Writing is the hard job in high school English teaching, high school students should check for deficiencies based on them studying situations to synchronize with teachers teaching.
