“The 2019 Exhibition of Traditional Crafts of Japan in Chongqing” was held from February 16th to 28th by a consortium legal person, DENSAN of Japan, in JSeCool in Liangjiang New Area, Chongqing. There were 80 pieces of traditional crafts out of 50 categories on display, bringing local people the Japan culture through the traditional crafts.
The first “Itinerant Exhibition of Traditional Crafts of Japan” in China was launched in 2018, and has traveled through Shanghai,Beijing and Chongqing. In Chongqing, it was held in JSeCool in Liangjiang New Area for two weeks, and received great acclaim from local people. The second exhibition in Chongqing was held at the beginning of the new year, making Chongqing the first stop of the second itinerant exhibition in China.
“We choose Chongqing as the first stop of the second itinerant exhibition for its strong atmosphere of appreciation of traditional culture.” According to Gu Wenwen, the exhibition planner, representative “traditional crafts” designated by the Law about Promotion of Officially Designated Traditional Craft Products Industry was displayed, adding more products to those of exhibits last year. The 80-odd traditional crafts consisted of cloth products including Kurume Kasuri, Tendo Shogi, traditional Miyagi dolls, Takayama Chasen, Ki-Hachi-jodyed fabric, table cloth, Harima abacus, Hakata fabric and others. “We hope that this exhibition can bring more excitement for traditional crafts fans in Chongqing, and give them deep understanding of the artisan spirit embodied in the exhibits.”
“The Exhibition of Traditional Crafts of Japan” is aimed to create a cultural space where people can savoring the “artisan spirit” which has been highly praised in Japan since Meiji Restoration and has contributed to the prosperity of Japan, leaving an indelible mark on Japan’s history.
Japan stepped into industry modernization in Meiji Era, during which most of the traditional crafts was superseded by industrial products and only a few of them make it to this day. These survivors have witnessed generations after generations of traditional craftsman and produced many crafts which is practical as well as beautiful.
The reporter at the scene noticed that among the exhibits the wooden crafts from Hakone were the most popular with Chongqing citizens, especially the traditional puzzle box of Japan, which drew a large crowd.

According to the introduction, woodwork from Hakone is special mostly because it has different colors of natural wood instead of paint. The favorable nature condition endows Hakone with wide varieties of wood with more than 50 colors. Local craftsmen manufacture the wood with diverse colors into various wooden crafts. Each wooden craft requires a long time for the complicated work procedure. A puzzle box would cost at least two to three months, for instance.
Apart from the wooden crafts from Hakone, there are also Nambutekki (ironware from Morioka and Oshu,Iwate prefecture), embroidery from Kyoto as well as representative crafts from other parts of Japan. The crafts on display is available at the same price as in Japan, which is far cheaper than in tourist attractions.
