A boy who lived in an orphanage (孤儿院) often asked the dean (院长) sadly, “No one wants me. Whats the point of living on earth?”

The dean always smiled but didnt reply.

One day the dean handed a stone to the boy and said, “Tomorrow morning take this stone to the market for sale, but not for ‘true sale. Remember, no matter how much money other people offer, you cannot absolutely sell it.”

The next day the boy squatted  (蹲) in one corner of the market. Unexpectedly, many people wanted to buy the stone from him, and the price they offered was higher and higher.

Back to the orphanage, the boy excitedly reported to the dean. The dean smiled and ordered him to go to the gold market tomorrow. In the gold market, some people even offered the price ten times higher than that of yesterday to buy the stone.

Finally, the dean ordered the boy to display the stone in the gem (宝石) market. As a result, the price of the stone rose ten times higher than that of yesterday. Because the stone wasnt sold at any cost, it was spread as a “rare gem”.

Excitedly, the boy went back to the orphanage holding the stone in both hands and reported all this to the dean.

It happened when I was about ten. One day my dad came home excited with a big brown box. It was a computer!We didnt see Dad for the next week. He was so into this computer that he spent all of his time in the basement (地下室) trying to put it together. We would see him when he came up for some food, only to hurry back down there. He looked dazed (头昏眼花), as he hadnt seen light for a few days. This was his new project, and he was going to finish it or die trying.

I was happy to be the first person to use his computer to write a report for my lesson. I spent three days writing it, and finally it was time to print (打印) it out. I pushed the button and the screen went blank (空白)!Then it started flashing and making great noises. I didnt realize that this wasnt normal until I saw smoke coming from the computer. My whole family ran in when they heard me screaming (惊叫) for help.

My hardworking dad stood there, shocked at the sight of the computer. We decided to leave him alone. That was also the worst day of my life.
