Early this month,news broke that Google was developing a mobile version of its search toolintended to comply withChinese rules.SomeGoogle'sown staffersresponded with anger at what some said was abetrayalof the company's values.

But the search and advertising giant has beenlaying the groundwork forfully return to China for years,including through people of local partnerships.According to a new report by the Wall Street Journal,those partners include developers who use its digital technology,as well as companies that use Google ads to reach customers outside China.Those partners have been influenced by Google CEO Sundar Pichai,who has visited China frequently.Google has also invested in Chinese companies,and has hundreds of employees in the country—about half of them in sales.

Most obviously,Google's Android operating system,which is free for manufacturers（制造商）,takes charge of China's smartphone market.Android versions on Chinese phones don't currently include Google search,limiting ad income.But the same manufacturers also sell fullfunction Android phones outside China,and one estimate claims（声称）Google makes as much as$10 billion in yearly income from those phones.

Google has also reportedly been in talks with China's Tencentaboutjointlyoffering cloud computing services.Google sells ads that help international shoppers find Chinese e-com mercesites,and its income in Asia is growing strongly.

According tothe WallStreetJournal,Google's push for growth and partnerships in China is partly intended to ingratiate（迎合） the company with Chinese authorities.Showing that it'scontributing tolocaleconomic growth would make iteasierforGoogle to gainapprovalfrom Chinatolaunch itssearch engine there—if it canrelieve（缓解） its critics at home.
