Characteristics of Pen Handing in the Line Drawing Course

Abstract: Line drawing is not only the basis and one of the most important expressive technologies of meticulous painting,but also an unique form of art expression.It is demanding in the selection of painting brush because the quality of drawing line can effect the following color application and the screen layout control.The text will describe feature of pen handling according to line drawing.

1 Definition of Line drawing

Line drawing is also called“shuanggou”which is a technology in Chinese painting.It refers to present the image,texture and verve of objects without color by different ink lines(thick,thin,long,short,curved,straight,pause and moisture).Line drawing plays a significant role in traditional Chinese painting.It is not only the composition of image,but also has relatively independent artistry.In meticulous painting with colors,line drawing is the basis for drawing lines and filling color.Therefore,many learners often regard line drawing as a introduction to Chinese painting.

2 Features of Line Drawing in Meticulous Painting

2.1Iron wire drawing(straight line composition);lines of iron wire drawing is marked which begins with silver shadow and write and to front.It is steady and balanced without moving up and down by a strong brush.Lines of iron wire contain implicit power and strong with smooth.

2.2 Orchid leaves drawing(curved line composition):lines of orchid leaves drawing fluctuate and stretch.These lines are thick and marked with twists and turns and transition which has various forms with thick,thin,curved and straight.It is extended freely and smooth.Because its shape looks like orchid leaves,thus it is called Orchid leaves drawing.

2.3 Reduction drawing(thick line and thin line composition):lines with reduction drawing is flexible and strong which using the center front and side front simultaneously.The thickness of lines are various.When drawing lines,the brush moves up and down and the line curved.The area is extension of lines whose trace isn’t smooth but without delay.

2.4 Folding calabash drawing(square and round composition)Lines of folding calabash drawing is square outside and round inside.It contains square and round with changeable,steady,powerful and open features

2.5 Gossamer drawing(sparse and dense lines)Lines of Gossamer drawing is delicate with thin-tips brush and curved line.It is thin,dense and connected which has the sense of straight peony.

2.6Big head and long tail drawing(straight and smooth composition):Lines of Big head and small tail drawing is straight and delicate with inverse start and smooth end.Its end has a front with quick moving which just like “weitiyanmian”in calligraphy and presents turning surface and gap of petals with smooth and power.

2.7 Line drawing(dotted lines and full lines composition):Lines of line drawing is elegant and curved with moister brush.The inverse end is painted with the help of remaining power.It shows the connection between lines and changeable.

2.8Dry vine drawing(curved lines composition)Lines of dry vine drawing is rounded.It uses Jin calligraphy with inverse center front.It is steady and slow when painting,which is just like a dry vine waving in the wind naturally.

2.9 quivering drawing(dots and lines composition):Lines of quivering drawing is sincere and honest.Painting a shivering lines with inverse front can draw curved and disconnected lines with delay .We need to care for the cooperation between brush and line.

2.10 Blend drawing(wet lines and dry lines composition)：lines of blend drawing is marked and thick with brush of different moisture.”Dry exists when the wet one appear”.Painting with dry and wet brush can make the effect of “paper is dizzy by ink”.

3 Conclusion

Chinese is extensive and profound,among which meticulous painting is a perfect art form.If you want to learn meticulous painting,you must learn line drawing first which is the basic and bones of meticulous painting.Quality of drawing line can effect the following color application and the screen layout control.We should not only learn technologies of the predecessors,but also innovation the painting skills.Combining excellent parts of traditional national culture which is inherited from the predecessors and should be developed and excellent parts of western art can promote further development of Chinese painting.
