Task 2
One day,the sewer(污水管)line under our house burst. My first response was to call the plumber(水管工),but when he heard what was on,he begged off.“We don’t do that.”he said,as if to imply that even plumbers have their dignity. He did, however, recommend someone.I made the call, expecting the man to moan at the thought of such a miserable job.Instead,he simply asked,“The address?”
And that was it.An hour later,Steve arrived in his truck.I watched as he walked down into the damp depths.A few moments later he appeared, saying:“Yep.It’s broken.”
“Can you fix it?”I asked with a strange mixture of doubt and hope.
Steve looked at me as if rebuking(指责)my lack of faith, and then said,“Sure.”Then he told me that he had to get a backhoe(反铲挖工机)and tear up the street to the main sewer line.
I asked,“How long will all this take?”
“I should have it done by evening.”
I didn’t want to watch the excavation(挖掘)of my property unfolded. All I wanted was to leave,go somewhere, and upon my return,I had everything the way it was before the damage.
I felt somewhat guilty upon driving off in my clean vehicle, leaving Steve to such a disagreeable task.I went into town and visited a few friends.Eventually, around 6 pm,my curiosity got the better of me.I went home, and a sweeter sight I never saw:a patch of newly-paved street and a covered-up excavation across my front lawn.I opened the cellar door and all was tidy and relatively dry.
I sat down on the back porch, lost in thought.I was taken by the very idea that, whatever crisis might happen to an unlucky homeowner, there is somebody who is practiced in its resolution. If that’s not the reason for gratitude,I’m not sure what it is.

Task 5
When you think of friends, you tend to think of people who have been in your life for a long time. But there’s another kind of friend—one that springs entirely from a particular moment.
The first such friend I remember is the Russian girl I met in London at the age of about four. That year,my mother had remarried and we’d be moving to the US.I didn’t really understand what that meant.I just knew everything was changing. The Russian girl and I were the two oldest in our school and the others were babies who couldn’t speak clearly. She spoke no English;I,no Russian. We communicated by trying to outdo each other—at drawing,at games, even at eating, which,I think, gave us something we could control.
In eighth grade, there was Jenny who had a small horse named Redwing.Eighth grade was a terrible year.We both knew it,but we didn’t talk about it.We spent most of our time with Redwing. On cold winter days,Jenny showed me how she’d lie on Redwing’s back, under the horse blanket. Then we’d go out on long treks, taking turns riding and walking. She left in ninth grade and I missed her.
To Julie,I’ll be forever grateful. We met on the beach in New Jersey one afternoon. She was there with her twin boys, the only other children there, and about the same age as my daughter.Cautiously, the children approached each other and soon were digging holes together.I moved my towel over near hers and we began to talk. She lived year-round in the little beach town.I lived alone with my daughter in a big Victorian a block from the beach. My husband had taken off for North Dakota, leaving me to puzzle out what to do next. Now,suddenly, there was someone I could talk to,which pushed me through that hard time.
