not only...but also...意为“不但……而且……”，是一个并列连词词组，常用来连接两个并列成分。当它连接两个并列的主语时，谓语动词应遵循“就近原则”，即谓语动词要与离它最近的主语在人称和数上保持一致。例如：

Mary can not only sing but also dance.玛丽不但会唱歌，而且还会跳舞。

Her friend plays not only the piano but also the guitar.她的朋友不但弹钢琴，而且还弹吉他。

The girl is not only humorous but also very lively.这个女孩不但幽默而且很活泼。

Paul speaks French not only in class but also at home.保罗不但在课堂上而且在家里都说法语。

Not only you but also Tom teaches in this college.你和汤姆都在这个大学里教书。

not only...but also...侧重点在but also上，有时also可以省略。例如：

I not only heard it,but(also)saw it.我不仅听到，而且也看到了。

【注意】当not only...but also...置于句首连接两个并列句子时，前一个句子要用倒装形式，而but(also)后的句子仍用陈述句语序。例如：

Not only did he come late,but also he forgot his books.他不但来迟了，还忘了把书带来。
