Elena:

See, the thing is, I got home tonight planning on doing what I always do.

Write in my diary like I have been since my mom gave me one when I was 10.

It’s where I get everything out, everything I'm feeling.

It all goes in this little book that I hide on the second shelf behind this really hideous①hideous英 ['hɪdɪəs]美 ['hidiəs] adj. 可怕的；丑恶的ceramic mermaid②mermaid英 ['mɜːmeɪd]美 ['mɝmed] n. 美人鱼（传说中的）.

But then I realized that I'd just be writing things that I should probably be telling you.

Stefan:

What would you write?

Elena:

I would write... dear diary.

艾琳娜：

是这样的，今晚回家后我本想像原来那样做。写进日记本里，10岁那年，妈妈给了我第一个日记本，我就开始写日记。

在日记里我才说出所有的心事。

都记录在这个小本子里，我把它藏在书架的第二层，那条陶瓷做的丑美人鱼后面。

然后我意识到我写的都是一些我想要跟你说的事。

斯特凡：

你会写些什么？

艾琳娜：

我会写，亲爱的日记。

今天我让自己相信，放弃也没什么大不了的。

Today I convinced myself it was OK to give up.

Don't take risks. Stick with the status quo③status quo 现状；维持现状. No drama. Now is just not the time.

But my reasons aren't reasons, they're excuses.

All I'm doing is hiding from the truth, and the truth is that I'm scared, Stefan.

I'm scared that if I let myself be happy for even one moment that the world's just going to come crashing down.

And I don't know if I can survive④survive 英 [sə'vaɪv] 美 [sɚ'vaɪv] vt. 幸存；生还；幸免于；比……活得长that.

Stefan:

Do you want to know what I would write?

I met a girl. We talked. It was epic⑤epic 英 ['epɪk] 美 ['ɛpɪk] adj. 史诗的，叙事诗的.

But then the sun came up and reality⑥reality 英 [rɪ'ælɪtɪ] 美 [rɪ'æləti] n. 现实；实际；真实set in.

Well, this is reality. Right here.

不要冒险，维持现状，不要太戏剧性，现在还不是时候。

但这些都不是理由，而是借口。我只是在逃避事实，而事实是我害怕了，斯特凡。我害怕要是我允许自己高兴哪怕一秒钟，整个世界就会崩溃。
