Filiz: I felt so blessed when making Chinese dumplings

I often switch my life between Turkey, Japan and China, these three countries. After coming to China, only did I understand the Spring Festival was so important. This is the holiday of family reunion, no matter how busy you are, parents, children and relatives gather together for a celebration. Spring Festival is such a lively time. When Spring Festival comes, the red color can be seen everywhere, it looks so joy-ous and festive.

Besides, dumplings is a very special dish. Actually, dumplings are famous in Japan as well. I have looked up the meaning of dumplings. When on Chinese New Year’s Eve the clock strikes midnight, people part with the old year and welcome the new year, so it was called “years’ interchange”. As the tradition puts it, eating stuffed food at midnight symbolizes the old year letting in the new year, that’s why people call this “交子” (meaning “interchange”). Later “饣” (a part of character “饺子”, meaning “food”) was added and the two parts combined turned into the character“饺子”.

Now, every Spring Festival we will get together, and make dumplings. In moments like these, I feel so blessed. Even though our life is very hectic, this time my heart calms down. Regardless of my age, I always feel like a child at this moment.

I like going to the Temple Fairs. I already spent seven Spring Festivals in Beijing, and the deepest impression about the Temple Fair was food. At some Temple Fairs you can even come across some international food and snacks. I was so impressed. I am fond of sugar-coated fruits on a stick “tang hu lu”. The crispy substance is sugar coating. I also like the rice cake “lv da gun”. There is also a game called “circling”, but it is hard to get the prize by circling.

Darya: Spring Festival in the Chinese countryside, very merry, but leaving you with an empty stomach

Once I had a chance to spend Chinese New Year in Guizhou province, Zunyi village. Zunyi was my ex-boyfriend’s, who was Chinese, hometown, where we spent one Spring Festival.

His hometown was a village. It was so cold there, and Spring Festival was the merriest time for the whole family. On the New Year’s Eve, everybody were watching TV, snacking on sunflower seeds. That night we ate tofu, cooked in a big iron pot. The pot was large, the kitchen was not renovated; it had only one simple oven, though the kitchen was rather roomy. That evening we were not full with food. They also had some dried meat. There were around 30 people present. Their family had five sons, and everyone came to the celebration. However, I was left with an impression that connection between the family members was not that strong. while sitting together, they did not discuss any personal topics.

I liked the majority of the people at the celebration. That night after everyone had drunk liquor, they started to play games. They were speaking the Zunyi dialect and I was struggling to understand them. Later we stood round the oven and talked, or played some simple games like finger-guessing. Three brothers began singing songs, I even recorded them, so funny. My ex-boyfriend was so excited, he said that he had never had such a merry Spring

Festival before. Even though it was cold, but everyone was happy.

The house was surrounded by mountains. In their neighborhood there was only one primary school and a basketball field. At day I went there to play basketball. Being a cheerleader for “Shougang” basketball team, I like this game. My skills of playing it scared the guests. The nature in that area was stunning. It was the first time for me to see terraced fields.

My ex-boyfriend had a son, who was also with us. He called me“mama”, I prepared a red envelope for him. I really loved him. The family of my ex-boyfriend gave me presents. In the South of China, during Spring Festival, people eat sweet rice balls, though the recipe is rather complicated. But I was not full that night, which was disappointing.

Besides, we went to the cemetery. His grandfather’s grave was close to the house. Then I also burnt a scented stick, kowtowed and set out a firework.

Deniz: I tasted meat dumplings with an olive inside

I am a twin sister of Filiz. Our mother is Chinese, we grew up in Japan. Japanese people don’t have vacations in February. Once, our mother asked for a leave from her work and took us to China for a Spring Festival to visit grandpa and other relatives. That time I didn’t think that Spring Festival was so important. Later, when I came to study in China, I only discovered that Spring Festival was the most important holiday in the Chinese tradition. I like traditional Chinese holidays, for example, Lantern Festival and Mid-Autumn Festival. This is the time when family reunites, have dinner together and attach great importance to the family bonds.

Every year for the Spring Festival our whole family come to my uncle’s place to have dinner. I even tasted the meat dumpling with an olive inside. In our family, if you scored a “prize”, you can be granted with a present. As Filiz just said, it is for the elder generation to prepare the late dinner, we, kids, feel very relaxed.

I am also fond of New Year scrolls stuck to the door. It feels so festive. Besides, going to the Temple Fairs with your fellow classmates is interesting too. There are so many people at those Temple Fairs, that some of us joke, we go there for “people-watching”. Apart from food, you can also find some traditional Beijing toys. I like to spend Spring Festival in China very much.

Watching New Year Gala, talking about New Year Gala

Deniz: Watching New Year Gala is an absolutely essential part of the festival night. Every year some matters of social importance can be raised on New Year Gala. The performers with the jokes and some popular slang conclude the past year’s biggest events which spark discussion after watching the concert. I remember on one gala “S.H.E” performed with their song “Chinese words”. It was so amazing, I think, Chinese is becoming more and more internation-alized. Apart from songs, there are also some stand-up comedy performances. I like Song Dandan and Zhao Benshan.

Darya: Once I took part in Hunan Satellite TV’s New Year Gala. I was sitting in the first raw. That night there was “Panther”band performing which I liked so much. They were rocking, and I was following their rhythm. They were singing really well, very cool. Watching a live performance is something different. I still remember there were some dancers wearing the costumes of vegetables, so funny.

Filiz: I think the Spring Festival is getting more international. Once there was Celine Dion performing “Jasmin flowers” and Sophie Marso from France. Another thing, that I would like to mention, is the humor. I grew up in Japan, and I understand the Japanese humor. When I just came to Turkey, it was hard for me to get used to the local sense of humor, but as time passed, I grew accustomed to it. The same with China, after settling down only did I get used to the humor in New Year Gala. I began to reflect why the foreign audience didn’t understand this humor, maybe, it is merely a culture difference.

Feeling so much idle on Spring Festival

Filiz: Normally I am so busy with things. Nevertheless, as the Spring Festival comes, there seems to have nothing to do. I did not get accustomed to such idleness. On Chinese New Year’s Eve, we usually visit our grandma at 3 o’clock and finish at midnight. I usually just sit there, snack on seeds. Sometimes a thought comes to my head: can one be so unoccupied? Darya: I am experienced in that question. Concerning myself, when I spent the Spring Festival with my ex-boyfriend, we went to his other relatives. Those relatives were so hospitable, prepared two tables, the host was really caring of me and other guests. When we celebrate the New Year in Russia, we go to other people’s homes to have fun; the guests don’t need to take care of any arrangements. But it is not like in Chinese, where people care too much about the ceremony.

Exchanging presents is more sweet and warm

Deniz: Chinese New Year lasts for quite a long time, normally it finishes with Lantern Festival. In the Western countries during holidays people exchange gifts, but in China people exchange money. Actually I think, exchanging presents is more sweet and warm.

Filiz: I found out, in WeChat groups during birthdays people send to each other “red envelopes” ( money). This habit also reached the Spring Festival. In Turkey on New Year’s Day one has to congratulate with the holiday and kiss the hand of the older person, otherwise he won’t give you the money gift. In my age I have to stay super “cautious” when other kids kiss my hand. After kissing, I have to give them some money.

Darya: In Russia during the New Year there are only few people who give money as a present. Sometimes my step-dad gives me banknotes saying I have to use it for a good purpose.

Chinese Zodiac and animal year

Darya: In Russia we also have Chinese Zodiac signs, counted according to the lunar calendar. The same with China.

Filiz: Before I didn’t understand the concept of animal year. Later my Japanese friend told me that in Japan they have the same point, called unlucky year. After I knew more about it, I think it was very interesting. The concept with animal year is also very peculiar. It differentiates one year from another.

New Year’s resolutions

Filiz: To complete a marathon, try travelling solo, cut hair.

Deniz: Learn more about Chinese culture, read more studies and books on philosophy and traditional way of thinking, take up more hobbies.

Darya: I can’t think of something special, the idea about my every goal usually comes suddenly. When it comes, I go for it. If I am asked about my new year resolution, let it be finding a true love. I am a Libra by Zodiac, very romantic by nature.
